In 18 months of ownership I've taken my B5 through a car wash only twice and both times picked up fecking scratches! NEVER AGAIN. Anyhow, can anyone in the know take me through a step-by-step idiots guide on how to get rid of the scratches below? I'm keen to do this myself and would like to do the whole car at some point soon, the bonnet seems like a good place to start. I guess this is paint correction not a detail? After advice on products, application etc? To be fair the bonnet is covered in light scratches from 15 years and 126,000 miles of use;

General rule of thumb if you can feel the scratch with a fingernail it needs paint, otherwise it should polish out

Thanks for the support Mike!!

@ cjh, cheers, I'll have a meander out to the garage and check in a bit. Any advice on polishing out as there are many more on the bonnet I know I won't be able to feel

This is true. That scratch looks very deep. Afraid you are looking at a respray for that.

If the scratch is solely in the lacquer layer you might be able to apply lacquer very precisely with a fine-point brush to fill it.
It won't disappear entirely but may not show to a casual glance or even until looked at carefully from the right angle.

Worth asking a paint correction specialist though, it's amazing what they can do.
