Morning, a friend is looking to buy an 08 Audi S5. Not that familiar with them, what should he be looking out for? Chain noise, clutch? Etc

Water in the boot or centre console mounted electronics (might show with a VCDS scan if a module can't be read), dead B&O amp, gummed inlets/manifold flaps. Dead keyless entry sensors (relatively cheap fix, but only an issue if you have start/stop button as doors always have the sensor mark, but not always fitted!) or module.

Your suggestions are correct too - although less of an issue AFAIK than the B6 engine. Clutch can get heavy and slip, also causes issues with engine starting as wear in the arm will eventually result in the inhibitor stopping the starter turning if it gets really bad!

You definitely don't want a cheap one as there's some real dogs out there.

Superb cars. I was given a manual 08 S5 for two days and I remember it very fondly indeed, and that was probably the final 'push' I needed to let my heart rule my head and buy my V8 S4.

Runs a later version of the B6 B7 S4 with FSI and a 4v not 5v head, doesn't coke up like the RS4. The car I drove only had 10-15k on the clock, whilst it is only rated a few bhp over the B6 B7 S4, felt far healthier, but I guess its a much lighter car than the B6 Avant I then bought. Sounds far better stock than the B6 B7 S4 which is a bonus

As above, clutch (and dual mass flywheel) would be the first thing I'd look for. All the V8 models eat clutches. I bought my S4 with a 2k receipt for the clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced with OEM parts, if you buy an 08 without the paperwork for this, set aside 2k.

I considered one, they feel a lot more modern than the B6 B7 S4 + B7 RS4, but the residuals were too good, they weren't dipping below 20k when I was looking.

Ones with no options are best avoided - Sat Nav and B&O are an absolute must imo. They would have a later Sat Nav around a 58 plate - HD Nav just like the B8 A4 S4 - definitely a bonus (the earlier sat nav is pretty much just a built in RNSE with the buttons and dials behind the gearstick instead of beside the screen)
