Hi folks - does anyone happen to know if the 3.0 V6 in the C5 A6 is belt or chain and what the change interval is?

Looking for a runaround for a while!

Cheers

belt - costs about £450 in parts if doing it properly incl water pump and stat.

Change interval is 5 years / 75k IIRC

Thanks Adrian. The one on question has 140,000 on it. I'll study the history then.

I considered one of these when I was selling my B6.  That was two years ago, it was 2k, in worse condition and with more miles than this one.  Coincidentally the car I considered was at AITP this weekend.  Noggy blue with matching blue interior and towbar!

Cheers Ian - that could work!

I may give him a buzz!

If you're looking at those, worth looking at S6 adverts too, as they won't come up together.  The S is generally much better specced and frankly the difference in economy isn't worth getting excited about.

The 3.0 petrol is a rare engine (I know as we had one from 2008-2014) and is facelift, whereas all the A6 4.2 are IIRC pre-facelift.  The 3.0 doesn't feel quick and you have to work it fairly hard to make progress, but as a wafter it's perfectly OK.  I quite like the 2.4 as well but most aren't quattro.

The S6's seem to be a little more than I'd planned on paying though. I just need something to runabout in for 3 months that won't cost a fortune. Off to see an old TT this afternoon as well, but I'm not convinced. The C5 A6 3.0 Quattro Manual however does look very tidy!

Yesterday I saw the worst car I've ever looked at 2nd hand. It was a Pissrat 2.8 V6 4motion. It couldn't have been much worse (but it was less than £600).

Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Have you considered one of these, or the later R (although cheapest non-cretin choice looks to be £3k)?

Nope. I no longer need a stop gap, as I bought my next real car! Collect it next week. I'll 'reveal' when I collect, but it's rather nice. Watch this space. 😃

Thanks to all for advice guys!
