Hiya.

I'm looking at fitting hybrid K04's to my S4 in a couple of weeks, as a 'bare bones' conversion. Ultimately though, over the next year I will be saving for a FMIC, Siemens Deka 630's, and BOSCH 044, as i simply can't afford it all in one go.

Once all the kit is on, would it be possible to program the ECU with 'in car' switchable maps? The reason I ask is because my car is actually my wife's daily, and will be until she goes off on maternity leave...

Ultimately I want her to be able to get in, ignition on, select 'Eco mode' and pootle about using about using, say, 20% boost. i.e enough to get around at a leisurely pace, but not so that it will terrify her (shes already spun in the wet at ~340bhp) or drink fuel (a constant sore point!).

But when I get in, ignition on, engage 'mental mode' (which will include launch control and flat shifting) and have a cheeky blast...

Also, what's it likely to set me back, if it is possible?

Sorry for the long explanation, I do tend to waffle!

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Dan, my S4 was the first one he converted to dual map when Antony owned it.
Not sure if you've been following Chris's thread since he has the car, but he is making use of the maps and seeing over 30mpg on the low boost one Rich set up for Antony!
Im not sure if he still does them the same way, but it was basically a hidden switch on the dash to change between maps

Can these be switched on the move? Or do you have to have the engine switched off

I was recommended to do it with either the engine off or at idle.
Technically you could switch on the move, but I dont think Id want to try it myself

30MPG!!! Woohoo!! That ought to keep her happy, as that was what the LCR was returning.

I remembered yours was switchable Martyn, but wasn't sure if it had to be done via VAGCOM, or another more involved process. I should have just txt you really!

A hidden switch sounds good. That way if it ever goes in to a garage, of which I have no choice, then at least I know some little scroat won't be able to have a play at full chat...

I eagerly await rich's return.

Cheers guys,
Dan

You can do that anyway if needed, just disconnect the N75

Oh well, just fancied getting a switchable map for my roadtrip to Spain so I could run low boost and better mpg down the autoroutes and still be able to crack on. Be handy if it were switchable while on the move just incase I come across anything that wanted to play . Be good thought if it could be done while off boost at say between 1500-2000 rpm? Need the pipes doing first before I get a map tweak though

I was told you "could" do it on the fly but there is a great risk the engine will stall cause it's updating constantly. I don't remember exactly but you could end up with a car that doesn't wanna start again on the side of the road

I'm not exactly sure whether Rich recommends on the fly or not, but I always switch off first. I'd rather not take the risk of corrupting the ecu (though not sure if that's even possible!)

Hi Dan, sorry for the late reply just back from my trip to Finland, 16 cars later

Yes, you can have switchable maps, dropping the boost etc to give it less power etc ...

Cheers
Rich

I've run the switch wires to the dashboard cubby hole and just fitted a rocker switch. I've flicked between maps at idle a few times and it has worked - but mainly switch when it's off.

Rich - could you confirm if the ignition should be on/off for the switching? Can these be switched "in flight" as others have asked. My thoughts are this would probably be discouraged.

With the proper Dual map option (this is a physical chip with two different maps on it in place of the original chip) you currently need to turn the dash off. It will work while driving/idle etc but you run the risk of throwing an error up which would stop the engine restarting. I am working on a solution to this and should be able to offer an option for live switching soon.

The other option I have is for the “light” user who may not require full dual maps but just small changes in the map etc, this can be done on the current single map and changed on the move, but I would not recommend changing on the move due to safety reason!
