Just had my standard B6 run on rollers before I put it away for the season. It managed 296 at the wheels. Not worried if it absolutely correct but it is a reference point to start at.
I noticed that the variable intake mechanism was not working during the run and there is a definite hump in the torque curve from about 3500 up indicating something is going on.
Looked on some forums and the the BBK engine has a 2 stage VIM. I also saw some youtube videos of people looking for various problems with the VIM system.
Before I start working through this can anyone confirm that the vacuum motor is pulled right in on engine idle?
Mine does not move and is held by the strong return  spring on the arm against the arm stop. The arm does not move with moderate finger pressure so the shaft in the manifold may be seized.
I will start by checking vac lines and solenoids etc.
Does the test mode in VCDS test the vac control solenoid for the VIM?
As an aside the flap valve control system in the exhaust on my car has never worked since I have owned it and the flap valves remain open. Is this a clue too?

Any help, pictures or links would be very welcome.

Thanks!

Update:

Vacuum actuator has a hole in the diaphragm and the shaft is seized in the manifold. ETKA shows a repair kit  079 198 327 which includes actuator and a bush for the shaft.
Anyone done this repair before and does the inlet manifold have to come off to safely work on this?
Also are there any UK suppliers of the repair kit at a reasonable price?

Thanks

Hi,

I think this is a common problem on the S4, mine had a complete manifold done under warranty with Audi which was £1400 or so!

But like you say it can easily be repaired. I think you have to remove the manifold to get proper access to the flapper etc...

If you google it I there are some DIY's guides around.

Cheers

Al
