advice needed on an audi s8

hey guys a friend of mine is possibly viewing this car tomorrow or monday and asked me what should he look out for and apart from obvious i.e general wear cambelt service history i told him the only thing i thought these suffer from is the auto box even though i may be wrong hence my post as i dont know the s8's that well any pointers or advice would be good

11 previous owners!!!

At that mileage it needs to have had a box or at least evidence of past fluid and filter changes - at that price it's probably throw away cheap but I'd tread with care. Over 100k miles with no maintenance = borrowed time/how longs a piece of string

It's a pre-facelift so 32v and less power/much older interior design

If he really wants 1 I'd be looking for a later one with half the miles for a couple of k more tbh

Plate is worth £250 or thereabouts

11 owners its the nature of the beast ive seen many new 2005 onward rs4's with double figured owners many people buy them then cant afford to fuel them insure them etc

its just to be used as a run around and been offered so cheap i might even buy it to use as im moving house how big is the boot

joking aside it has full history last service last one done a week ago including plugs filers etc aparantly he spent nearly £600 on the service hes yet to tell me exactly what they done so apart from gearbox there pretty reliable?

Yep, they are quite bulletproof apart from the gearbox and normal CV boots etc, the usual suspension bits that would wear out on an A4 or 6, and the odd gearbox seal and engine oil leaks, nothing major to be honest oh sticky calipers too. This is a very high spec car, I've seen it for sale a few times but IMO he should buy a facelift not a pre facelift. Google the website 'Audipages' and the 'A8 Parts Forum' for more info.

The worst car I ever owned for reliability was a Mk1 Golf GTI which had 14 recorded owners by the time I had it - was nothing but trouble with loads of past cheap bodgery to keep it on the road.  Agreed it's a sign that previous owners haven't been able to afford the running costs so have passed it on as soon as a big bill looms......

My S8 has had 3 owners, and it shows.

Last service on mine was £2.5k (before I bought it) which didn't actually include that much (cambelt, front brakes and service) but at least if the belts aren't due and it's had plugs it shouldn't need much spending on it for a while.

The boot is fairly useful, but the seats don't fold.  If you're moving house an A6 avant will be far more useful (and an A4/Passat more useful still!)

As for other stuff, it's largely down to how the car's been used and maintained.  Lack of use can be the worst thing for them as there's lots of electrics to seize up/go wrong.

They're a big car to have taking up space as a 3rd runabout - maybe if he wants a V8 fix this might be more useful generally for not much more money?

Ardrian!? An S6 over an S8, not in a million years. It couldn't hold a candle to the S8, the only way in which the RS6 tops the S8 is in power. No one is moving house!! I'm not starting a D2 vs C5 debate here, let's just say D2 is the best overall car I've owned and I've had 3 C5s including an S6 and an RS6 and more D2s then I care to remember.

I agree Amar, but we're talking about a CHEAP S8 vs anything else.  I'd rather have a cheap A/S6 and know that any bills that do crop up are likely to be half the size (bar a gearbox which would be about the same)

I've got a C5 A6 avant 3.0 petrol and it's fine for what it is.  I couldn't give a rats ass that the DIS is red and it feels a bit low rent by comparison, as it just works and continues to even if a couple of things stop working properly - I thought I'd throw it in as an option as we don't really know what the buyer wants it for.  Ours has had pennies spent on repairs in 5 years - think 1 coil pack is the only breakdown!

I was joking about the using the boot for moving house ive rented a large van and mrs has folded the seats in the ml and you can fit a few houses in those belive me the s6 avant isnt what my mte wants he just wants a big cruiser so either an s8 or a 7 series going to look at it tomorrow

1999 car so new reg at that time was august as new car reg's were only once a year untill 2002 51 plate's
Ian_C

S plate was the 'changeover' plate with a seven month lifespan from August 1998 to Feb 1999.  1st March 1999 would have been a T.
Moonwalker

He probably had a private plate ready to go on and couldn't wait another 7 days, or care if it were worth £1k less when spending £60k on a car probably. Actually this one would have probably been £75k, it is very high spec.
Ian_C

2 days!

Looked good in the pictures, though the amount of owners she's had would bug me. Almost one owner for each year.

I'm the 4th owner of my S8, the highest ownered-car I've ever had was a 1976 Ford Mustang. I was the 9th owner.
