Ali's B5 A4 1.8t Quattro Sport

I've been on here a while but it's my first build thread.

This is my 4th audi but 2nd b5. First was also a 1.8t but pfl and 2wd.

Here's the old b5, from how I bought it til how I sold it

I bought this B5 in September from Auto trader and me and my mates took a road trip down to Stroud to collect it at 7am, I handed over the cash and a deal was done.

Just before we set off home.

The car stayed standard for a bit, but I knew it wouldn't last long. The plan for it was to be practical and have usable everyday power and decent handling. I picked up a few bits in quick succession for the handling starting with some FK Konigsport coilovers, H&R rollbars with rear strengthening brackets and powerflex arm bushes, they absolutely transformed the car and the way it drove. Set the car at a decent height, not like my old one which was flummoxed by the smallest bump, so it remains practical.

Next came the parts hoard for the power, a chap on here was selling his Frankenturbo F21 set up with 3" downpipe, bigger injectors, and flowed manifold, I snapped it up, it needed a few extra bits but I,m collecting them slowly. Up to know I've got an S4 stainless cat back system, just needs a bit of modification, an FMIC kit to keep it all frosty and a Devilsown water meth kit. Still on the list is a new downpipe to mate to the exhaust a bit easier and a few odds and ends to get it running. As well as that I'll be slipping in an ECS tuning flywheel and rs4 clutch for maximum launch controls

Next up are the few cosmetic tweaks. I have had some Recaro CS's for a few years and had some custom frames made up for my last B5, I set about putting them in one evening as they're the most comfy thing in the world.

I like to give the cars I have a machine polish soon into ownership so they have a good gloss and fewer swirls. This one came up nicely, will go over it again soon after its had the rear end painted after a nice chap bumped me!

Other things happened on Xmas eve, I fitted my new BBS CV's, well, new to me. Gave it a quick wash and here it stands today in all her glory. Finally looks like 'Ali's' car which is what I wanted.

So this brings my B5 story up to date, probably missed a few bits and bobs but I'll update when I remember. Next up is some brakes, probably 18z's as I got some s4 uprights and the turbo being serviced and balanced by Ben at the Turbo unit, hopefully that'll come back with a nice clean bill of health.

Hope you like, give me a comment or a follow on Instagram : Alimarsh89

Cheers, the seats are the best things I've bought for one of my cars. Seriously love them.

They're nice, no disputing that at all. I'd have loved recaros. But these are sooo much more comfy, just wish they matched the rears!! Either need a rear bench or make them truly one off and get them done with a jacquard centre.

Is that the seats you got off me bradderz?

Are the B5 recaros heated?
Bradderz_1988

There not heated no but the drivers seat has the element already fitted as the green plug is there but not on the passenger seat, kufatec do a loom to allow retro fit of heated seats but you'd also need A/C panel with heated seats and the element for the passenger seat.

Some B5's had the option of heated seats though.
ian52

I sold a set of them to somebody and thought it was you.

I had those Ian
Ali_cat

So after a bit of Recaro seat chatter

Bit of an update, car went in for some paint this week I'm getting it back tomorrow morning so it can be put back together. It's had the whole rear end painted, so both rear quarters, boot, bumper and the lower valance colour coded too. Saw it on a U.S. Santorin and looked amazing so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I also went last weekend to get some S4 skirts, they'll tie in nicely with the rear splitter then it'll just be a case of doing something with the front end when I get the chance.

So yeah, here's some progress pics

I'll take some of the complete car once it's all back together and post them, but that's it up to now.

Cheers.
Ali_cat

Most been on here for a while, the car came out of paint looking great. Haven't really taken many pics of it but here's one of how it currently stands.

My boost gauge has been mounted into the vent, just needs to be fitted back into the car now.

This weekend just gone I started upgrading the brakes as I have a full FL S4 set up to keep me going and get a big knuckle set up on the front for a future monoblock caliper set up. I've had these for well over a year as they were going to go my kingfisher b5

Then tomorrow I'm off to Coventry to fetch my cat back Milltek exhaust ready to get my turbo kit a bit more on track, and finally, tonight I fetched my bargain wheels. Picked them up off eBay locally, they'll be fitted with some 225/40's soon and got straight on the car. If anyone wants the bbs' then get in touch.

I'll try and keep this a bit more up to date rather than one big post.
Bradderz_1988

Are those TT speedlines ??

Youll need spacers as iirc there 9J ET52 so will catch on the rear upright.
Ali_cat

I know, I've already got some spacers to fit them with. Either 10-15mm will do the trick.
172cup

Well done mate looks really good,  and not finished yet???
Ali_cat

Got my new wheels on today and gave it a wash. Looks a lot better on these. The extra width helps to widen it a bit.

Next on the list is the Miltek once some clamps arrive.
Bradderz_1988

You running spacers ??
Ali_cat

Yeah. 10mm all round.
C J

Paints looking fresh dude!

That front wing!!! Mmmm.

Latest update

Recently I have fitted the Milltek, I also put on a decat at the same time, performance is a bit better but being held back by the standard turbo and intercooler.

I have had the car 4 wheel aligned, the first time in my ownership, and it has had a lot of suspension work including new hubs at the front. No surprise it was well out, the guys at the garage did a great job and it handles superbly now.

Plan is to get the turbo and cooler on over the next few weeks. To prepare a friend welded the water meth boss into the inlet pipe for me, a really tidy weld. Today I painted the cooler pipes and the chiller itself. Set up my paint booth (washing line) and set about etching and then satin blacking them.

Then after that I set about giving the b5 a deep clean. 2 bucket wash, followed by door shuts. Then a Poorboys black hole and exp sealant. Gives it a really deep wet look. Then the interior was wiped down and the crevices dusted and hoovered. Too many tip runs for the new house have definitely taken their toll!!

Hopefully the next updates will be for power upgrades

That's some serious work gone into this car Ali

Thanks. I get that comment quite often as you can probably imagine!!

I've seen/helped work on this in the flesh. Noticed the plate too, can't have been registered much before mine at all!

Alps wrote:

Thanks. I can't take all of the credit for it. A lot of help from my brother and CJ on here.
Challice

Looking very tidy
Ali_cat

Been neglecting this thread recently so a bit of a monster update now.

First was my long drive down to cornwall, which went fine, 700 miles without missing a trick. However when I got home realised that the car was making an odd noise. Turned out the water pump was on its last legs. After getting the front end off this was replaced for a genuine unit, whilst the front end was off I thought it would be rude not to whip the manifold and turbo off too and replace and upgrade with I had ready and waiting.

Out with the old

In with the new

New turbo

New manifold

And new assorted mounting bits

And then, whilst it was off I got my first bit of 034 in the form of a phenolic spacer to keep the intake temp down a bit. Also got a poly snub mount to take a bit of slop out.

Ran into a few issues with the intercooler though. Turned out that the kit I bought wasn't compatible with the b5 so moved that on and got a b5 1.8t specific kit which will be fitted soon.

Next up was a couple of days out and prep for them. First was Vagruner at Donnington, what a great day. I went out on the SRS session which was great, it was my first track experience so took it easy and wanted to find my feet. One thing I discovered is my lack of confidence in the standard b5 s4 brakes. So, a an upgrade will be made before any other track action is considered .

Ali_cat

Following on from this was audis in the park last weekend. I wanted to make a few changes to the appearance of it prior to this. So I set about getting the s4 side skirts fitted, which I have had since January!! So, all fittings were blasted and powder coated for longevity and we got down to it.

No pics of some bits as had my hands too full.

I also got my spoiler on, it's very marmite so I don't expect everyone to have the same view as me but I like it.

I gave it a machine polish before fitting as conveniently it was already santorin blue.

And finally to match my colour coded skirts and rear valance I removed the front splitter and got it prepped for paint.

Here's a few pics

Not bad for a couple of flick cans in the garden!!

And here's the finished result

I know it's a long one but worth it I hope.
Bradderz_1988

Wont quote your long post lol

But i see you have modded the bottom of the airbox and also running a 007p i moved mine to the TIP gives you a bit more recirc/DV noise.

You can just about see it in this pic 👇🏻

How you finding the fast spool of the frankenturbo 😜

Sort of wish i never sold it on as just recently bought a B6 1.8T cab i could of thrown it on ☹️

Whens it going in for mapping ??
Ali_cat

The spool is nice, have wound the boost up a bit with a bleed valve until a map. Want to take it to MRC but need to save a bit more first, would be nice to get it done before the end of the year.

Would have been good on a cab, not gonna lie I have a bit for a soft spot for them. But I have had 2!!
Challice

Such a nice looking car spolier doesn't look that bad not much higher than mine I don't think.

What turbos on it now?

What power are you hoping for?

Cheers, it's not overly large, deffo not like a Scooby wing!

It's got a Frankenturbo f21, similar to a K04. I'm hoping for 280 with it, that would be a dream amount of power without needing rods. Will just need an rs4 clutch and a decent single mass tho.
Bradderz_1988

Have you fitted the saab red injectors and used a bigger maf housing ??
kylebrady

Looks like a astra mk4 gsi spoiler

Bradderz_1988 wrote:

I haven't used either yet mate.  I will be using them but not til the coolers on and it's about ready to be mapped.

kylebrady wrote:

It does a little bit, thanks.

It's actually by JE designs from the era of body kits and big spoilers. I think it adds more to the a4 than it does to an astra though.
Norrs2

One of the best TQS's I've seen!

Some real nice work there.

Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. Nice to see the little guys with the 4 pot single turbos can make an impact without an S badge

TQS...........
TQ  S ................
S.................
Bradderz_1988

I ran them on stock cooler with the n75 disconnected on wastegate actuator pressure.

You could easliy swap them in and wind the boost up for a rough 220hp 👍🏻
Bradderz_1988

Was roughly 8-9psi and calculated maf readings were around 196hp
Ali_cat

It with a heavy heart I write this, unfortunately this will be the last update for the thread on here.

Last Wednesday whilst out at the park a chap in an astra had a blowout and ploughed into the osr corner of my car. The damage was pretty bad but I heard from insurance today that it's a total loss.

From what they've told me it's all suspension components on the rear corner as well as the body being twisted. Really gutted but means I can move on from my second b5 to something else .

I will be buying the car back from the insurance company to strip and in die corse will write an as for available parts. Until then, if you have seen something that takes your fancy then drop me a PM and we can discuss. Oh, apart from the seats, I'm not parting with them.

Here's some pics of the aftermath

Which has left me with this

Challice

That sucks ass

Did you have an agreed value?
Ali_cat

Challice wrote:

I didn't have one. However they have come. Back with a decent offer based on the car and the associated mods etc.do I'll be back, probably in an audi but which one I have no idea
Ali_cat

Well. New car is here, might get a thread up on it if it starts progressing a bit.

A bit of an old and new

The B5 is being broken for spares so all for sale. Have a few ads up at the moment but for any engine bits let me know as I haven't tackled that yet. All parts are available. So get stuck in!!
yamz89

Ali I'm gutted to hear about this, CJ told me today.. I also did my first track day with you in my Avus RS4. I remember seeing the car and was well impressed! I'm glad your dealing with it OK, fingers crossed you do well out of it all.

Just chucked you some money for the dash vents.

Marc
Alps

Not a bad swap hey. A4 for an S3.

Any news on the 3?
oliS4

Id recognise that spoiler anywhere!   Rotten luck man, at least an S3 is a decent replacement!
