Audi S4 (URS4)

Hello there. Having a look through the site and it looks good. Will you be adding a section for the URS4's?
I'll be at inters so I'll say hi.
Good luck with the site.

A section for the URS4's can be added if you like. Give us the relevant details about them and we'll sort it.

Welcome to the site BTW
TimG007

What info would you like?
CliveH

Welcome Tim, and good idea

Mark - the urS4 was essentially the ABY version of the S2 2.2l 20vt inline 5 cylinder engine (code named "AAN") inside a larger saloon body (C4), produced 1992-94.

The urS6 has the same engine (produced 1995-97), and was also later available in avant form, so might be a good idea to have one forum entitled "urS4/S6", along the same lines as S4/RS4 B5?
MarkB

So should it go above the S2's in the list?
TimG007

The body shape is the C4 so if you put it after the S3 and before the S4 I'd think.
CliveH

MarkB wrote:

Difficult one that Mark.

The S2s and RS2 were produced between 1990 and 1996, and the urS4/S6 "followed on" between 1992 to 1997, but on the other hand the "ur" prefix is clearly associated with the original urquattro.

Having said all that, I believe that the reason for describing these as "ur" is to distinguish them from the later B5/C5 S4/S6.

So on balance, I would put it after the S2/RS2 in the list.
CliveH

Also worth mentioning that both the urS4 and urS6 were also later available (in Europe) with a V8 4.2l engine, and latterly there was an even more powerful urS6 Plus (also sporting a V8 4.2).
MarkB

Well, the new forum is live. I'm not totally happy with the order now so we might have to look at changing the naming of the forums a little.

Maybe use the chassis model first? One to think about.
MarkB

Moved the topic to the new forum.
CliveH

Nice one Mark

Looks spot on to me.
TimG007

This is great thanks Mark.
CliveH

Right, now we've got that sorted out (how about that for service?!), please tell us about your car Tim.  Some pics would be good too
Graham

I didn't click there was an S4 before the B5 until I bought every back copy of Audi Driver with a mention of S4 in it and found the urS4 in a few of them!

I'd like to see some pics too. How is the body work holding up?
buzzard

would be nice to see some pics tim

A couple of pics while we're waiting...

One of ours and Avants are faster.

Very capable chassis and as it has the 20v I5 turbo engine can be made to produce serious bhp which the chassis is more than capable of handling, the can make excellent track cars as they are a very stable platform but need to have dampers and springs uprated and correct geometery on the suspension to benefit the upgrades.

The early S4 had a unique brake setup nicknamed UFO's on account of the brake bell looking like a UFO, the caliper acted on the inner diameter of the disc with the bell supporting the rotor on the outer diameter.
The theory behind this design was to enable a larger pad area for a given disc diameter, this was changed to the same HP2 setup later cars enjoyed from late '93 onwards.

Possibly one of Audi's most underated S cars IMHO
TimG007

My car is a 1994 Audi 100 S4 Turbo Avant. It is currently standard under the bonnet apart from an induction kit I fitted today. I could not find a kit so I've been making brackets all day to hold it in place. It's on now so I'll be making a bracket for the heat sheild in the morning.

The car was standard when I picked it up a few months back with 105000 miles on the clock. It was owned but the same family from new and has a full history and a shed load of Audi recipts, over 3.5K in the last 3 years.

They came fully loaded from the factory. It has -
6 speed gear box with 4 wheel drive
Electric front Recaro seats
Electric windows x4
Electric mirrors
Digital Climate control
Electric sun roof (This was an option)
Avus 16 inch alloys
S steering wheel
Trip computer

These are all things we expect as standard these days but this car was sold in 94 when BMW were still putting manual windows in the front of some 3 series.
This did come at a cost though.
The list price for this car in 1994 was a massive £47,000

After 14 year of living in London my car is now looking a little tired. The local repairs are starting to peel and there is some marks on the bumpers.
So it is going in to the body shop in the next few days for a full respray and some new bumpers.

I'll take some pictures in the morning and post them.
This is a car that is very underated and very few people have ever heard of them.
SimonS4

My dad had one of these back in the day. Think that is what probably got me into my S cars.
CliveH

TimG007 wrote:

I'd say very understated too.

Sounds very nice Tim, looking forward to the pics.

I'm sure she'll look excellent after a bit of TLC and some detailing
surefoot

Hello everyone here's mine, 1992 urs4 auto.

hope this will give you some idea.

    pete
Graham

Very sutble, just how I like it.
CliveH

Very nice Pete, and a very tidy engine bay too

It still amazes me how on the S2/RS2 the intake took a long and tortuous path, and straight across the top of a hot turbo, but they got it right on the AAN engine - straight out of the intercooler and into the throttle body!
surefoot

Cheers Clive

I do try to keep it fairly clean, just so i can keep an eye on things.
not had much dealings s2/rs2 but alot of people say the same about
AAN engine. still used daily, so nice not to be surprised by things
TimG007

I see you have chrome roof bars. I must get myself some, they look great. I think that all Audi roof bars are te same size (Can anyone help me on this).

I'm glad to see another URS4 driver and it's great to see you use it daily. mine is also a daily drive. I get about 230 mile to a full tank but most of it is around town, what are you getting with the auto box?
quattrokid

EXCELLENT!! someone else has 1 welcome to the forum Tim and fellow owners

here's mine now with 210k miles on it!

saloons  are faster.... mine is one of 36  automatics believed to be sold  in the UK

just had a replacement turbo and crankcase seals replaced when the last turbo died!!

had the car for nearly 6 years then sold it only to buy it back again 361 days later.

I am delighted that other UrS4 owners have surfaced on here because on the rs246.com forum these sections are dead.

SO...lets get some camaderie on here with older S4's please.

Mine was / is a daily driver and I get a lot more than 230 miles per tank!!
SimonS4

My dads old one was an auto as well.
TimG007

I know it was dead on there, I was starting to think that these cars were being broken as they sell for alot as parts. I have not seen another one on the road and they are never "spotted" on the forums.

A big thanks to Mark B and the team for setting up this section so quickly. I think that with this forum going to show more UrS4 drivers will find this site.

Mine is a daily drive funded with my car allowance from work and Ithey gave me a fuel card so Shell V power all the way.

I am having problems putting my pictures on here, it says file size is to big. How can I reduce the size.
MarkB

Your welcome!

I love the dash in the photo above. Makes me want to buy one. A neighbour across the road from my parents house has one of these I think. I'll have to take a closer look...
TimG007

Here is my car.

Yes I love the dash to.
Do you know if he has an S4?
This may start a fight but I think Avants are faster and cooler!
CliveH

MarkB wrote:

Go on Mark, you know you want to...
CliveH

Nice looking car there Tim

Hey, I think we already have more urS4 owners on here than S2forum...
TimG007

Thanks Clive.

It would be great to get all the UrS4 owners on one site (this one).
Audi driver is having a VW / Audi track day on the 26th of July would be nice to take the UrS4's round the track.

I hope you've noticed we have space and a post allready going for the Castle Combe day http://audisrs.com/about51.html
TimG007

Yep I've put my name down, Hope there is enough space for us all.
MarkB

There will be
Graham

It's the interiors I like most on these older models. The seats and dials etc are great. I can understand airgbag steering wheels cant be quite as cool now, but the other areas have gone downhill for no reason.
TimG007

I know what you mean but I really do like the new RS4 steering wheel with the carbon bottom.
SimonS4

Here y ago Mark

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/433925.htm
CliveH

Tempting isn't it...

Actually, there's an urS6 avant, which has been modified to RS2 spec - been on Pistonheads for a while : http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/385126.htm
TimG007

There is no fixed price for these cars, There is a saloon on autotrader for £1995.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es..._pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

They are usually for sale between £3/£4K.
surefoot

Tim not been very far your car is that right? mines 168164

Roof bars are nice in chrome, as long as there off a C4 chassis you should be alright. Getting about 230 with auto around town,
so not a lot in it rarely apart from the extra £2000 in the first place
TimG007

I wish it was this low. Audi changed the dash pod as it went faulty. The car is on about 107000 miles now. But the fuel dial has started peeling!!!!
quattrokid

Tim what on earth does your car have as options to get it up to £47k ???

mine was £36167 and mine has:
steel electric skylight
electric windows front and rear
climate control
heated leather seats/ electric movement
electric heated mirrors
metalic paint
if fact all it doesnt have is cruise control!!

just somewhat surprised at your invoice. Mine was registered in Feb 1994

(my rev counter started to split so was replaced).
TimG007

I don't have the invoice from when it was new, but when I got it I looked at some web sites to find out about the car and that's where I got the price from (and we all know how the internet can be trusted). Now like a man with OCD I'm going to have to find the site.

I'd love to know what these came with as standard and what was extras.

I think I might take my dials out and have them copied. I did this with a VW Corrado and then ran off dials with all sorts of colours.
I can't belive the dial only lasted 30,000 miles!
quattrokid

you can still get them from Audi or if you want to ask All Audi breakers in Bristol... they are the last stop for many damaged S4/S6's

01179494136

http://www.allaudi.co.uk/

I have the original roadtest by autocar so when i get home this weekend I'll scan it and send it to you, please pm me an email address where to send it:)

my dials have lasted 14 years except for the rev counter? no idea why!!
buzzard

class peice of engineering these are!!
first saw one in noggy blue and five pot soundtrack said it all.
nice to see they still have a dedicated following.
did i see one parked by the bridge at mallory?? dark blue avant?? was it corey's??
quattrokid

Tim...Tim...Tim!!!

what badges have you got on your car

they AINT UrS4 badges!!

these are
quattrokid

[quote="TimG007"]I'd love to know what these came with as standard and what was extras.

tell you what.. I once saw a green S4 saloon manual in  Portsmouth Naval Base with absolutely NOTHING on it

manual windows front and rear
no sunroof
no air con
didnt have the "avus rims" either
but it was an S4 because I asked the owner to show me the engine and it was an AAN so he wasnt cheating!!

couldnt believe it

I'm shocked, I thought these cars were fully loaded as standard. I guess we all have to thank the people who orderd them from factory with all the extras for giving us a future classic with all the toys.

As for the badges I'll be changing them when I have the car has it's respray.
quattrokid

OH!! phots please?

yep...some fok just cant leave the options list alone can they!!  looks like the person ordering the green one as mentioned above REALLLY was on the bread line!!

I was thinking about it the other day... it didnt even have leather seats!!

there was an S6 Plus which was V8 powered but didnt come to the UK, this baby would have everything on it and alacantara seats etc.
TimG007

Hey, mine does not have leather seats either. They are electric and it does have the quattro logo pattern which I think is a very nice touch.

Every panel is being painted including the roof so it's going to look stunning when it's done. Mark who is doing the work thinks I should go for something really bright out of the Audi pallet (Yellow / Orange) but I think I'll keep the colour standard.

I There is a LHD 1997 S6 on auto trader. It's up for £9995 so I'd think it's a plus for that price. The ad says 2226 cc but there is a 4.2 badge on the back of the car. It's a shame there is no picture of the engine.
quattrokid

keep it original... this type of car  doesnt suit bright colours such as your pal suggested... IMHO it would look hedious!!

the Plus didnt have a 4.2 badge on the rear it would be one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-S6-PLU...PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I havent seen an S or RS series car yet with the engine size badge on its bootlid.
TimG007

I'll keep the colour standard.

The car on autotrader has a new style badge so it didn't leave the factory with the badge on

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es..._pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

What do you think?
quattrokid

hmm!!

has all the right clues to suggest it is a Plus V8 pity no phot of the engine as you say.
Dont think the Plus V8 was made as a RHD model

there was 1 on pistonheads as a 5 pot running RS2 spec (320bhp) but its gone now.

Still a bit pricey now even for a Plus
dont get me wrong its a cracking looking car from what you can see of it.

..... why? you thinking of having it instead of a respray:)
TimG007

No, I like having a RHD car, I spend alot of time over seas with work, I've just come back from a few weeks in Texas. Driving over there is ok but when I get back from the airport and take one of the cars out, it's like putting on an old shoe.

There are not many UrS4's these days. 2 for sale on autotrader against 7 UrS6's so I kind of like having it. I picked it up for a steal (I should be locked up) at an auction as no one knew what it was. I have a few cars in my garage and it's my first Audi so I'll keep it for many years.

I'd be tempted with this one as it's a 1998 manual UrS6 and most I have seen are autos and I thought they were made between 1995 and 1997.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es..._pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

From what I have read the plus was only LHD as it was for europe only.
quattrokid

wrong wheels and no skoosh jets tut  tut tut!

the Plus had a 326 bhp V8 32 valve.

my girlfriend has an RS4 so that more than wins  the power war!!

after having my UrS4 then selling it then buying it back again I am SOOOO lucky as it is now sentimental as well as like wearing an old set of slippers.
After its mini refit it will be staying thats for sure, I have a rust patch at the top of the windscreen but will get that sorted out before winter.
TimG007

quattrokid wrote:

What do you mean
quattrokid

that link to the 1 on PH... has the wrong wheels on it and no headlight washers!
TimG007

I see.

I'm looking for a set of headlight washers, I hope to find some before the respray.

I wish my mrs drive, I'm sure she'd be happy with an S3
quattrokid

whats wrong with yours?

as I said earlier try All Audi in BRISTOL, they have a few damaged cars in stock

we had an S3 the previous model... great wee car:)
TimG007

My car didn't come with any

I'll call them Monday. What switch does it use?
quattrokid

there isnt a separate switch...its on the windscreen washer stalk, the right hand side one, when you wash the screen by pulling the stalk towards you it also does the headlights when the lights are on... I think!!

its a pain because you may not necessarily WANT to wash the lights everytime you do the screen!!
as a result it has a 5 or 6 litre screen washer bottle!!
TimG007

That should be easy for me to wire in but you're right, it will be a pain. The front of the car will be covered in water marks in no time and with mine being black I'm going to have to wipe down the front end almost daily!!!
quattrokid

my skooosh jets aint playing anymore!!

so will just have to wash it daily as well now!!
Pity a separate method couldnt be used to select when you want to clean the lights as welll as the screen.
TimG007

I'm thinking, could you wire the headlight washers in to the rear washer?
TimG007

I saw this UrS6 at Santa pod at the weekend. It looked very tidy.

CliveH

The RS6 replica wheels look good on it too
quattrokid

saloons dont have a rear wiper.... mine doesnt!!

yea nice car above:)
TimG007

It's all gone a bit dead in here. Are we all still alive?

Who's on here with a UrS4 on the drive
Parptoot

There must be some more about!

I know they were a bit scarce but they can't have all gone to pot.

That reminds me of one I used to look after at GTI engineering, his name was Mr Gash (no, it really was) and he used to have loads of grotty mags, whips and leather gear in the spare wheel well. Like we'd never go in there looking for a spare wheel to check!
Dirty old git. He looked like a proper old fashioned flasher.

Anyway back to the point in hand (ooer!) where are they all now?
Paz

lol @ Parptoot's flasher story.

You must have some great stories from the GTI Engineering days dude.
TimG007

It wasn't me! I think I was still in school when you were there
Parptoot

Paz wrote:

Unfortunately I was there after they had been bought by BBR (Brodie Brittain Racing), long after the glory days, so it was a mixture of V.A.G. stuff, Cosworths, RS turbos and the like.

We did have some stonking races though, I was much braver then. (he says, slowly creaking into a large leather arm chair with a pipe)

I have!!

where is everyone?  Tim your car is looking much better but not entirely sure about the bumpers
TimG007

I'm not sure how long they will stay on. I might swap them in the spring, it will depend on if I get a company car or a car allowance with my new job.
quattrokid

couldnt you keep the car anyway?

pity to loose it after your refit!!
TimG007

Oh no, I'll keep the car either way. It will just depend on what I use it for.
I'm not going to do to much with this car. A new set of wheels and an exhaust and that'll be it, well maybe a bit of brain surgery aswell but I'm looking at a new 20v project in the new year
quattrokid

what project??
TimG007

Once christmas is out the way I'm going to look for a white non turbo GT quattro coupe and make it something quite special.

Troube is while in Mexico I ask the girlfriend to marry me, so now I have to pay for a wedding in 2010.

Congratulations Tim.

My advice would be to do it all abroad, much cheaper and you have the excuse to only invite the people you actually want to have with you.
TimG007

Thanks dude. We're planning on having it abroad as it will save about 4/5k. If we have it here it would end up being a very big wedding. I'd be happy to do it on a beach under a coconut tree somewhere.
Parptoot

We went to Sorrento in Italy to do it, and then stayed in Positano down the road. We saved ££££ by doing this and had a fantastic holiday also.

Plus we had no-one to ruin the day from home, even better.
quattrokid

go to the Caribean... your mrs (desig) only needs her bikini..... saves buying a dress!!

a coconut tree sounds very romantic

anyone have good phots of thier cars?
this section of the forum is dead. Surely THERE MUST BE a few still knocking around?
martinjs

Hi, yes i have one, 92' saloon, manual.
Great cars, under-rated is an understatement. Im impressed with it. Will post a pic when i get a chance.
quattrokid

WAY HEY..... COMPANY AT LAST!!

nice one Martin:)

I'll look forward to that
TimG007

Another one!

Welcome Martin.
quattrokid

my pal should be getting an S4 next week when he is back off the rigs!!
martinjs

Nice

I will get some pics up over the weekend of mine.....needs a good clean mind.
martinjs

Here are a couple of pics of mine.
It needs a proper clean, and deserves a good machine polish.

Things i've done after i bought it:-
Both front wings were rotten so needed replacing.
RS4 alloys (one is buckled so needs repairing if possible)
Hid lights.
H&R's.
Remap to 280ish hp.

This week i need to order front and rear track rods and front balljoint arms. Then it needs a 4 wheel alignment, at the moment its all over the place.

quattrokid

niiiiiice!!!!

how did you manage to get rotten front wings?
What did you do to the lights? mine are arse so I need my foggies on as well to make it worthwhile having lights on!!

Where are you Martin?

here's a few more of mine in the snow:

if interested see the rest here:

http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k194/quattrokid_2006/
martinjs

They were like it when i bought the car.
It had mudflaps on and must have started to rust where they were mounted and progressivley got worse and worse.
Mudflaps got binned, they are the work of the devil!!

I got the hid kit from ebay, £35, not quite as powerful as the more expensive versions around but definately worth it, and a doddle to fit. Quite a few people over on s2forum have them also
I too drive aroung with the fogs on. Might convert those to hid as well.

Im in Leighton Buzzard.
No snow down here...drat!!
quattrokid

if you do the light conversion please letme know what you do...

there is a nice UrS4 for sale next door on classic-audi.co.uk

http://www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=2437

would you be going to the A.D.I next year?

we should get down/ upto the midlands breakfast club as well.

http://www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=2580

its held at Cosford RAF base museum
martinjs

The lights are dead easy, you just need to mount the ballast units somewhere near the back of the lamp unit. There are full instructions in the kit.

link to seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-XENON-C...PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I should be at ADI next year yes.
That was the last breakfast club of the year today wasn't it?
