B8 S4 Buying advice

What's people's thoughts on these? Anything to look out for? I've heard about the sports diff how can u tell if it definitely has it?

I'm looking at a 09 plate s4 avant with 95k miles hopefully tomorrow. Is there anything of note that I really should be on the lookout for at this mileage?

Next would be mods. I'd definitely be going to MRC for there pulley and remap upgrade. How does the gearbox and clutch etc cope with this?

Any advice would be great as been into the b5's for years

Personally, I think they're great!! (but then I would!  )

For the Sports Diff, the car will need to have ADS (Audi Drive Select) - i.e. suitable buttons on the dash:

...and then within the menu, the diff needs to be listed:

As for things to look out for, if it's an S-tronic you're looking at, on a 09 plate, then it would probably be reassuring to see that the gearbox + mechatronics unit + clutch have been replaced/upgraded at some point, as the earlier ones have been known to have a few problems.
If manual, then I'd probably budget for a new clutch (and possibly even a DMF and/or upgraded versions), depending on how it's been driven previously and how you plan to drive it (especially after the MRC Stage 2!)

09 might have slightly different set up, mine didn't have the MMI option to select individual setting and the buttons were down behind the gearstick.

Take a quick look under the car and you will see hydraulic lines and wires leading to the rear diff.

The different position of the controls will have been due to no nav on yours.

It will be interesting to find out what you thought of the B8. I still remember my first B8 test drive. My B5 wasn't as tuned as yours (mine was about 320bhp/560Nm at its best) and I was quite impressed with the performance of the B8. I have had my S5 for a year now and haven't had it tuned yet, but overall it is a worthy successor. I remember Graham advising that the lack of turbo boost 'shove' was noticeable but the linear acceleration made up for it. He was so right. But I'm guessing that you'll find a stock B8 a bit lacking for power compared to your B5 and so a stage 1 or 2 B8 will be what you need.

As has been alluded to, its the gearbox that needs scrutiny. If its a manual then check the clutch for wear - there have been cases of premature clutch wear for the B8. If it's s-tronic then as has been mentioned find out if any work has been done. Whilst there are good early s-boxes (Graham's) there are also cases of problems and if there's no warranty then it can be really painful.

It has the audi select drive buttons so looks like it has the diff then.

This is the car:

He doesn't have any history of work being carried out on the clutch gearbox etc. What upgrades are available and costs??

Buttons for drive select don't guarantee the diff, it could just have active dampers and/or dynamic steering.

Ok I'll check it on the audi drive select menu then

It is possible to order ADS without any of the three mechanical options.
Graham

No.
Dippy

Sorry Graham, mine was a statement, not a question. So having the ADS button does not prove that the car necessarily has any of the 3 options.

I was in a hurry and misread. However for the S4, that was B8.5 only. The B8 had to have ADS combined with one of the machnical options.
Dippy

Yes, seems true for the S5 as well. I wonder what the reason for that was.

Like a lot of small detail changes in the facelift, it does seem a more logical solution.

Worth noting that MMI screenshot is from an 8.5 and the 8 doesn't have 'engine sound' option and looks slightly different
