Back in an S3

My now wife had a nogaro blue S3 about 7 years ago now...

we're getting back into another one, this time a low mileage Imola yellow example with only 38500 miles

Collect next weekend † .... this is a 210bhp version so what's the difference in the engine / ecu with the ones with 225bhp ? Is it simply a tweak with a remap?

Phots to follow once we get it hello to fellow S 3 owners †
Bobby9

There is no real difference as far as I know, my opinion is that the standard cars are quite sluggish to drive, especially after B5's etc, and a remap and maybe cat back takes them to where they should have been anyway! I have just fallen back in love with my 2001 S3, was going to sell it as I bought my second B5 S4 but managed to persuade my girlfriend to get rid of her Mini and keep it Got it valeted and some refresh work on suspension and it has got so much character, currently considering an uprated Haldex Blue controller to make it more like a permenant awd, have you heard of them?
Challice

I belive its just the ecu that differs, 38k that's low
Adrian E

The later 225 is the BAM engine also used in the later Leon Cupra R and TT - if memory serves there's no mechanical difference and they'll map to the same levels all other mods being equal and stay reliable - some components aren't interchangable but there's no logic to the changes apart from standard production changes as products evolve.

Think around 260-280 is considered sensible without spending money on internals or turbo change?
quattrokid

Hi Bobby,

No I haven't heard of a blue controller for the haldex module ...

Compared to the B5 RS4 and the V8 Cabrio of course it's going to "feel slow" but that's missing the point with this purchase, we loved the noggy 1 we had and an opportunity has arisen to bag an immaculate Imola example with one owner gent from new with every single document it's ever had and service record is pretty detailed from the same dealer since new!!! He traded it in for an †RS4

It will be our fun car and not going to be driven 20k miles a year either

I've asked Grizz about a wee remap for it but we haven't even seen it yet... may do ... may just leave it as is .
TinTin1201

had one ,same engine 210-225,just with an ECU remap.
BAM series engine was prob the best,if i remember there were about 3-4 types within the S3 short lifetime.( same engine in the TT series),apart from the 180 version.

# Haldex controller locks more of the wheel power transfer to the rear( normally front bias)

# Haldex controller locks more of the wheel power transfer to the rear( normally front bias)[/quote]

Aye that's it, been offered one for a very good price but it's either that or 3" downpipes for the S4 at the moment! Hmmmmm desicions

I've just also been out for a 'spirited' spin in the S3 and it's class! ESP off and revving up to the redline it's so much fun, doesn't sound to shabby for a 4pot either, the essence of why we buy and spend so much time and money on these cars..........FUN
quattrokid

^^^

I'm sure it's probably done during its short life in use but what service does the haldex unit want ?
Bobby9

If you mean service intervals I think it is every 40k reccomended, oil and a filter change if I am correct.
Bobby9

So with your 38k example it may be an idea to see if it's been done in the history and if not get it done? I know I generally like to get an oil change etc when I buy cars unless strictly not necessary, just so I know, for peace of mind.
graemep

The haldex service is oil every 20k, and oil and filter every 40k

A stage one remap is well worth it in these cars, more for the extra torque than anything else, as it makes it a much different beast and much more drivable on the motorway as well. Shop around for the map as some are much more aggressive than others. Also, not worthdoinganything with the exhaust unless going for much more power.

The only other things done to mine have been some H&R springs, better pads/fluid for the brakes, and changed from the Avus alloys which dated the car. Some shots of mine here - http://audisrs.com/about39318.html
quattrokid

Rightio I'll ask if the haldex has had its services done, judging by the sound of its history file being done at the same Audi dealer I'd vote on it being done, if not then its not the end of the world and something to address at its next service

Nice photos of yours Graeme

Is it a case of plug in and play ?

How much ? Pm if you prefer
ian52

Mine had full weitec suspension,a remap and Leon cupra R front brembo's. was a nice and fairly quick wee car. I don't think they are as nice a car as the b5 in general but if I had to get rid of the RS I would quite happily get an S3 again!

No worries mate, im looking for 329 ono. The advert is linked below, you will need a double din size stereo 'space', i can find out about fitment from the S3 guys over on ASN (where there is a big following fyi) if you are keen..

S4 IRL

As mentioned the 225 has VVT, it also has exhaust gas temp sensor where as the 210 does not. I have had two 8L S3s with 210 engine. On a remap they both make the same figures. Myself i think the 210 engine is more reliable
ian52

A lot of people go on about the BAM engine being the best but I think the only thing diferent on that to the APY that was in mine was the vvt and no SAI. Same head and bottom end! Rods are the weak link on the engines.

I'll give that a miss thanks, don't really wanna mess with it to that extent, don't need satnav anyway since its in my phone these days

Thanks for the offer though

Nice one Rich!   Hope the weather is good for your drive down next weekend so you can go topless one last time!
quattrokid

Will be... Rain, snow or sun
GrantF

Nice one Rich, look forward to seeing it sometime.
quattrokid

Cheers mate, perhaps meet at Glasgow Audi for a brew sometime soon ?

(Taken from pistonheads advert for it sat in their compound)

Ive phoned them this morning ,They're checking the coil pack issue to check if they have been changed/ hadnt been done or needs to be or not... and haldex history to see if it's oil was changed @ 20k miles, it's not reached 40k miles yet so maybe the next oil & filter change for the haldex unit hadn't been done...

He'll get back to me ...
chunky79

Looks great. The wife has never forgiven me for selling our Imola S3, it was stunning. Had half yellow alcantara seats too.
S4 Muzza

looks lovely, cant believe how low the mileage is! mine has just topped 150k...
we'll need to get an ayrshire/west scotland meet organised soon
quattrokid

have you got an Imola ?!!

At least haven't got far to meet up

I spoke to Ayr Audi today to ask if they can tap into its history file and ask about the coil packs... they where changed last May but the haldex 40k mile service hadn't been done yet... well it's not got that far yet !!
colinurquhart

Rich, just showed the wife your new car and all I got was "uuurgh, looks like its been out in the sun too long" I did try to defend it by saying you need to see one in the flesh to appreciate them. I'm loving the Imola.
quattrokid

what sun does your Mrs sit in?

IF I have been sat in the sun in the middle east for a few weeks I'd be like this

Thanks for your support of Imola , looking forward to catching up with Mike & his Imola RS4 and get a few phots in
colinurquhart

I saw mikes RS4 once at the Edinburgh Audi and looked stunning.
Teri

Nice one Richard. It's definitly worth getting it re mapped, much more fun believe me
quattrokid

Hi Teri , how you keeping ?

Is you're S3 remapped ? If so who did it and what increase in power did you get

haha you'll be glad to hear its not an imola, Santorin blue. was at crieff audi last year.

i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Viper map when you get it done. i've read countless times that the difference between standard and stage 1 on the S3 (with any map) is phenomenal, but i'm still just about managing to enjoy the car as is. could be tempted in the near future though.....
Ryan_W

Get it mapped by Bill @ Badger5, he's a genius with the 1.8's!
coullstar

Had one before as well, Revo mapped before I got it but it was good fun.  If you like spirited driving try and get the geometry better set up with adjustable rear tie bars, mine had this along with Bilstein suspension and it was very good.  Upgraded front brakes as well were good.  Nice all round packages and some are going cheap right now.
Check the roof rails / gutters are they are well known for corroding there.  Its not rust but a reation between the two different metals used.  Its well known for them to bubble the paint in that area.  Pity they didnt do a 5dr but then they wouldnt look as good.

Heres my old one.

Hi, I'm doing fine thanks. Long time no see eh?
MRC did the S3 remap quite a few years ago now, spent a bit of time there as they hadn't done one before. It worked really well, got about 10-15bhp more. Car still goes like stink and feels just like a gocart.
Hope you're ok
guymcc

Cool looking S3 Graeme!  Wheels look good.   These are great wee cars, and a bargain now!  I had a red one, but it looked a bit orange in some lights, mate got a Daytona grey one, and that would be the colour I would get if I got another!  Would be cracking around here with the snow and a set of winters on! Anyone want to buy a T reg fiesta with 33k on it for £3k
quattrokid

^^^^

Not entirely sure this one isn't tuned ! Goes like a squirrel on speed !

Quiet a bit of induction noise as well....   but nothing in its history file to say if and by who tuned it.Anyway I've bagged it for this week
Teri

Nice! Have fun
quattrokid

We're fine thanks Teri, catch up when we visit Leeds, no dates yet but I'll keep you & Jimbo informed and meet up en route down or as we head back up here
S4 Muzza

pulled out behind you earlier tonight from Hope Homes Rich, obviously it was dark but car looks very good in the flesh!
quattrokid

†Jesus !! You should of flashed me then OR was the Imola blinding you † ..... What you doing up at Hope Homes, I was aware that an Audi pulled out of the Hope's residence.

Are you free this weekend ? Would be great to meet you and get a few phots in †
S4 Muzza

I work for them!

Yeah definitely , i could do Saturday afternoon for an hour or so? about 12ish?
quattrokid

sounds ok to me, I've ordered new rubber floor mats from Ayr Audi this morning so collect them Saturday morning.

Where you wanna meet? as you've guessed I'm seconds away from where you saw me, come round for a brew if you like or meet in Ayr?
S4 Muzza

could just meet in Ayr, i'd be heading down afterwards anyway. at the Audi garage?
quattrokid

Ok, Ayr Audi @ midday
See you then
S4 Muzza

yip see you then!
quattrokid

rtdi

i nearly bought this car for my friend think until she decided on a brand new A1. its a nice clean car.
quattrokid

This S3 is like new !!!

Got fresh tyres on it last weekend and new rubber floor mats on Tuesday.

Thanks for not buying it

Come out of the dentists this morning (£604 lighter and a numb face   ) and there was a lovely Imola 8L S3 parked behind me.
Very nice colour.
You taking it to Crieff Rich?
quattrokid

Yes Jase

Update: it HAS been mapped by the previous owner... it's got mapped by someone called Jase @ mobile mapping ltd... yea exactly, who's he?!!!

It's up to 238bhp & 340nm of torque. I found a Miltec race/ sports cat on Audi-Sport.net hardly used so I had a chat with Grizz about it.. cut to the chase I'm having that fitted and a Miltec cat back and a freer flowing air filter that Grizz will supply for me then put a Viper Tuning stage 2 map on it † It's also got an Awesone Tuning haldex ecu upgrade on it!! I think it makes it more 4wd more of the time but I'm not sure exactly what it dies to be honest.

It's a peach of a wee car!!! WE LOVE IT †

Jase, you any closer to deciding if you and family will visit us on the Saturday  of the Crieff weekend?

Teri, I've bought a battery from Jimbo for the RS, collecting it either the 24/25 th March if your available to pop round to Jim's to say hello?

vbr
