BBC and Sky to share F1 coverageAppalling news:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9550930.stm
Sky is "bigging it up" by saying that races will be broadcast in HD .... but the BBC already do that.
F1 on the BBC has probably one of the largest viewing figures of any BBC programme and they're being forced to give it up. Is this down to the greedy bar stewards at F1? All of a sudden the TV Licence fee doesn't seem such good value.

That's absolutly crap
Worse news I have heard
BBC did a great job and I bet with sky you can't watch later like you can with iplayer
Just utter shite that is

Not that I intend to subscribe to skysports, but I bet the coverage will be peppered with poxy adverts for injury lawyers etc.

Great - and I suppose Sky will stick it on their "sports" channels meaning that those without them will have to upgrade to get F1 live...
Saw that the BBC were having to cut it back which is crazy as it's one of there most successful programs!!
Sad times indeed...

There are loads of senior citizens that love and watch F1 - they can't afford a skysports subscription (even if they could understand how to operate the HD box) - what are they going to do? Mind you, I suppose the highlights will be on at silly times in the morning so they can watch it then.

If you want to watch every race live, then you have to subscribe to:
Subscribe to Sky
Subscribe to SkySports
Subscribe to HD
Great move by the Murdoch/Sky empire.

I have Sky and SkyHD.. All channels
But I refuse to pay that much for Sports and/or Movies.
Does this mean it wont even be on BBC-HD..?

Yep that is correct, I won't be buying sports just for the sake of F1 either. In fact out of utter disgust I will be boycotting it altogether, let's see if the greedy old tw*t ecclestone thinks it's a good idea when the viewing figures halve.
I'm so disappointed in this; again a money driven decision with no thought for the fans - its appalling.

Very sad indeed, F1 is the only sport i watch so couldn't justify subscribing to sky sport to watch it once a fortnight.

Wtf ? That's crazy! BBC will show half of some races? Plus free practice and qualifying, so BBC staff film it and Sky edit it full of adverts and charge us a fortune to view it!
|
Jonmurgie
|
Another question is - who's actually going to be presenting it?
Unless Sky take over the BBC team (Jake, Dave, Eddie, Mark etc.) I doubt they will get the respect or access the BBC currently enjoys giving us far worse coverage
Adverts too no doubt - back to the terrible ITV days
Bad times for the sport indeed...

I think I'll wait and see the full details, but it's not worth paying for sky just for F1, no doubt sky will use this to up it's prices too.
So annoying when the BBC are so good at live events, I recon the beeb should have a pay per view channel to top up it's revenue.

Ahh .. that would fit in with Sky's promise not to increase its prices for 12 months from July 2011.

And yes, the prices will go up at the start of the F1 season, falls just outside the 'No Price Increase' promise..

I've never felt the urge to subscribe to sky and stick a dish on the outside of the house, and this certainly won't make me change my mind! Will just not be bothering to watch any more - can't see the point in watching half the races and missing the rest, or getting a cut down version of what happened hours after it's finished.
Only option I can think of is finding a way to watch online coverage from abroad live, with Radio 5 Live running in the background....

Sky have confirmed that there wont be adverts, but im not paying for SkySports, its a rip off. Its bad enough having to pay another £10 a month just to watch stuff in HD.

That'll be the end of me watching all the races then, I'm not going to be getting Sky as I already use Freesat. A pity really as has been said already, the BBC are doing a good job and only getting better.
On another note I notice that Hamilton has been fastest in free practice so far at Hungary, I hope he keeps that up for qualifying.

Bugger!
Not happy with this, but the BBC just could not afford it and will therefore see this as a good outcome not that we do though.
FP 1,2 & 3 with Ant & Crofty are excellent and it looks like we will keep those.
I respect Sky as a business but I don't like them. We only have the basic package and I think that can go as of today!

Sky sports only get 2.5 million viewers for a big football match. F1 is much less popular so i'd guess it would loose 90% of its 10million viewers on sky! Thats got to hurt the teams selling sponsorship?

me too, Ive been pretty unimpressed with sky from Day one when I had to switch from Virgin, and my bills are much higher than from virgin. Im just not in a cabled area.
Really annoyed about the F1 thing and Im about to look into Tivo! The straw that brok the camels back. It just seems all one way with sky, prices always seem to go up (price freeze my arse, go look at the terms.... you never get anything upgraded for free. Provided you make no changes to your plan and most changes tie you up in a 12 month contract. I remember Virgin kept upgrading bandwith all the time for the same charge.
Would have virgin back in a flash if I was in a cabled area.....

Cant they just scrap coverage of cricket to save money? How many people watch that compared to F1? I dont have sky sports and dont intend to get it. I dont watch football so why should i have to bend over to watch half the races.

Having just finished off watching todays Quali it makes me even more sad to think we're going to loose what's simply FIRST CLASS production of a great sport (the only sport I bother watching), it's just so well done there isn't anything Sky can do except make it worse

motorsport coverage on telly is ARSE !!
NEVER SEEN ANY Le Mans or DTM on terrestrial telly, the worlds most famous motor race and its not even mentioned in the media either, a wee clip on the back page because McNish got well and truely stuffed into the barriers!!
F1 ia arse as well.... no overtaking, too any rules and regs that changes as often as Bernie gets a bit from his Mrs !!
future coverage will be pay per view... we already pay to view... its called the f'ing TV licence and look how much shyte we already have to face!! Big Brother, soaps etc should be on pay per view then perhaps all that mind bending total bildge telly will be cleared into the sad bar stewards channels and perhaps the BBC will concentrate in making and showing decent programs instead
F1 is a bunch of rich kids on a weekend procession!! bring back the likes of Mansell, Senna, Prost, not these pussies of todays offerings

I think it should be no holes barred, 'if you can afford to fit it then fit it' system. Turbos, supechargers, big aero packages etc.
This will mean a two or three tier system but that will just liven it all up and keep them thinking.
Maybe the Beeb will keep it if there was a bit more excitement to be had.

It's not going to happen, it's not going to change, not unless Bernie takes the £££ signs out of his eyes and considers the FANS for a change - selling it to BBC for a price they can afford so they can continue full coverage.

How about we get all F1 drivers when they're next in the UK to park up around strategic locations in London to bring it to a stand still? Affecting the economy would get someones attention. More so than a petition, I agree. Likely the police would be the only ones to notice though

"singed" is probably more appropriate!
Just signed up now and only 11,000 sigs!??!
Have some of the signatures gone to sky as part of the "sharing" deal?!?
Pees me right off too - especially as i understand there was an official contract to keep f1 in the free-to-air domain. Sky can easily command £70-100 a month for licences per household, and people are still paying it!!
What I dont understand is how no-one in government either cares or has realised that sky are gradually gaining more and more direct control of not only the airwaves, but also of the sports themselves - it's a vicious circle; look at premiership football and the stupid salaries and bankrupt clubs - all kept going, partially at least, by the huge payments from sky tv contracts.
Madness. And a very sad development for motorsport AND the BBC. another nail in the BBC licence coffin..
