Not sure if there is a buyers guide but i will give you some of the things i had go wrong with my s3 and dealing with customers with s3's has also brought up some common faults.

The inner rear tyres wear, this can be caused by broken rear springs. Adjustable rear tie arms are a very worth while modification also and will prevent inner tyre wear.

Front top mounts are prone to failure. The bearings also get noisy.

Coil packs do fail regularly. My s3 had already had 2 full sets at 27k miles and another set when i sold it at 29k miles.

If pushing for bigger power then the rods are a known weak point.

Also look out for cracked heads & manifolds as this is also a know problem. This can be down to poor mapping creating way to much heat and reliance on the egt keeping things cool rather than correct fueling etc.

I would also say that the turbos are not so much weak but do fail. 2 of my friends had fairly low mileage s3's and their turbo's failed. Cars were well looked after. This could have just been coincidence/bad luck.

The brakes are not great but perfectly fine for normal use and will stand up to "stage 1/stage 2" tuning.

I dont think the s3 handles that well in standard form but with some simple changes to things like the anti roll bar, billet subframe mounts and springs (ideally strut & spring combo) they do transform the car and make it a very capable little weapon.

Overall i think they are a superb car and do really miss mine. Plenty to chose from so you can be picky.

Nice one thank you. Think I've found the same info around the net, I've got badger 5 on the same trading estate and he seems to know his s3's and the 1.8t engine. Had a chat to him and shown him a car or 2 I'm interested in, nice friendly bloke who was willing to spend nearly an hour with me yest talking over the cars and the faults
