Custom Rear Diffuser – interested?

Custom Rear Diffuser
Some of you may already be familiar with my Widebody S4, which also featured in AudiTuner magazine a few issues back.
Well, based mainly on the subsequent feedback and interest shown by other owners, I've been investigating ways to manufacture the widebody arches in kit form, along with the custom rear diffuser.

Purpose of this post is to gauge interest in the rear diffuser in particular:

I've got UK-based automotive professionals lined up to design and manufacture the parts to OEM quality, for straightforward fitting using the standard fixtures and locating clips.
In short, it's intended to be a top quality product that's very easy to fit as a direct replacement part, to compliment the styling of modified cars in particular, without being too aggressive.

Cost wise, I'm expecting it to work out at around £395 +VAT and shipping.

What do you think?
If there's enough interest, then production could begin in as little as a few weeks…

EDIT: Added poll to collect feedback

Can u do this in silver?

It can be supplied primed ready for painting, so can be painted any colour (or combination of colours) you like!
When I get the time, I was hoping to photoshop a few combinations to see how they look (e.g. silver and black).
I did one yesterday in metallic blue (see the FB page for that, if you're interested).

If it's to match the bodywork colour, then it may be best for the paintshop to blend it in with the surrounding areas anyway, to ensure a good match.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
So I'm hearing "like the product, don't like the price".
In which case, begs the question - what would you consider a realistic "right" price for this...?
pdh 14a

Personally,i shouldn't be running a b8 S4,money wise! So i would probably be out at £200! But i would say a lot would be interested at £250-£300.
Technick

pdh 14a wrote:

Wish it was viable at that price point, as it would make it all very straightforward!
For the quality I'm after (and that these cars deserve, IMO), likely production quantities and to design/manufacture in the UK, the costs do go up somewhat, unfortunately.

That said, basic economies of scale obviously mean that sufficient interest (translating to sales), would mean the price could adjust accordingly...

I would be interested if it would fit straight onto my 2010 S4 B8 Avant. Could it be supplied in gloss black? so it could go straight on the car. I think £395 + vat then plus paint shop costs for painting/fitting could make it an expensive mod'.
PMJ

I like the diffuser and at that price compared to other out there this is a steal. Especially as it's choice to have it painted in what colour or have it hydro dipped. I don't think for the quality and the fact it's a direct replacement that you could buy better.

My thoughts also...tempted with a B8...obviously enhanced. 😜

Yes, it would be a straight fit onto your 2010 S4 B8 Avant.

You raise a good point about the finish.
Although I wouldn't rule anything out completely at this stage, I did think long and hard about this and, although I would anticipate most people opting for a variant of black, also felt it important to recognise the value of choice. That, and the fact that anyone changing the standard diffuser for one such as this is likely to be looking to make the car 'their own' anyhow - which may well extend to the colour(s)/finish of this custom part also.

Perhaps 2 options may be the way forward - (gloss?) black or primed ready for alternate colour(s)/finish?

What do you all think?

What I would add is that it is very easy to fit - it simply clips into the existing slots in the bumper and is then secured underneath by 3 screws - in exactly the same way as the OEM part.
As such, makes for an easy DIY job, although also recognise that not everyone would have the time/inclination/confidence to fit it themselves.

It may be worth running another poll, personally I think if it fits straight from the box like the OEM part then you may have more interest if it is supplied pre-painted. I would put a gloss black one on my black Avant.

Thanks Lee. Useful feedback and appreciate the suggestion, but suspect another poll wouldn't really provide much insight, if this one is anything to go by!
As I type this, there appear to have been 471 views of this thread, but only 6 votes - and that poll was only asking a simple 'like/dislike' question!

I haven't voted as despite being a B8 owner I am not in the market as I am unlikley to mod mine.

If you want general feedback, I like the product. Looks good and I think the price OK if it were to come finished (not just prep'd for paint).

With the high quality straight swap part you propose, I think it should come finished. Sure you can't please everyone and multiple choices probably not viable but I think a finished product more appealing. Those that want to go custom still can by modding it.

Thanks for the feedback, Graham - much appreciated!

Not that I have one, just probably what I'll go to next. If it were transferable it would be really worth while in my book.

Believe Audi subtly changed the design of the rear bumper on the B8.5, which would imply that some adaption would be required to make the B8 unit fit.

Now that looks proper nice!!!
talal

I would have gone for one of these...

I posted a request on here for info if anyone knew of any decent aftermarket rear diffusers for the B8 about 3 months ago as mine stock one got damaged whilst parking (not me!)

I couldn't find anyone who sold a decent one so went stock again and it cost me IIRC £124 for the part and £80 for fitting

so an extra £200 for a much nicer product isn't a huge extra outlay I guess but I probably wouldn't buy unless I needed to replace my stock one...

good on you though, there is a gap in that market

Well, after several weeks of work, the production CAD data is now almost complete - teaser video attached
As a reminder, it is fitted in exactly the same way as the factory part - tabs along the top edge clip it to the bumper, and 3 screws attach it underneath.

We've taken onboard all of the valuable feedback and managed to reduce the price by 20%, plus there's a further £20 introductory discount on top of that being applied to pre-orders at the moment!

There's also an option to supply it already painted gloss black, as requested!

Hi Dane,

Short version:
Around £100 extra (basically, what it costs me when I get a batch of them painted up by a 3rd-party, prior to shipment).

Long version:
Originally, it was looking to work out at around £395 + VAT for the part (and then, if you wanted it painted in e.g. gloss black, then that would be an additional cost you'd need to factor in, as Lee mentioned in his post).

Based upon the feedback received, it seemed that providing 2 options would be the best way forward:

 1. 'Natural' - whereby you can then finish it however you like - e.g. fit it as is with it's 'natural' black plastic finish, or else Paint it, Plasti Dip it, Wrap it or even Hydro Dip it in whatever colour/texture/finish you like.
As I say, this was looking to work out at around £395 + VAT
However, after some jiggery pokery (mainly, in relation to VAT registration) I managed to get the price down by around 20% (i.e. the VAT rate that would otherwise need to be applied) to £399.99 including any applicable VAT.
In addition to this, the price is currently discounted by a further introductory £20 - to the £379.99 that's showing on the website at the moment.

 2. 'Painted' - whereby it's supplied already painted in gloss black, ready for fitting straight out of the box (provided you want a gloss black paint finish, of course!).
This is, basically, the 'Natural' unit + gloss black paint, so the price I managed to get the 'Natural' unit down to + the £100 it costs me to get it painted - so a grand total of £499.99 including any applicable VAT.
In addition to this, the price is currently discounted by a further introductory £10 - to the £489.99 that's showing on the website at the moment.

So, in summary, there are 2 versions available, and current pricing is:
 1. 'Natural' - £379.99
 2. 'Painted' - £489.99

Now taking orders!

Facebook and website

Major update:

Production is now underway!
Pre-orders are to be fulfilled within the next few days, followed immediately by any new orders.

Below is a picture of the 'first off' part - a test run from the production mould.
As an initial sample, the quality is exceptional, meaning only very minor tweaks required to get the process and part 100% and in, arguably, a different league to any others out in the market (including more expensive options!).

When I get the time, I'll fit this to my car to demonstrate the quality of the fit, etc. (even though this is still in its 'natural' plastic finish, and the customer parts will be of even better quality).

If you're looking to transform the appearance of your A4 / S4, then you may well want to consider one of these!
Technick

Black or black...?

Technick

A few pics of how the 'natural' finished part looks on my car.
It was very straightforward to fit and really does, IMO, sit perfectly (exactly as per OEM), but judge for yourself!

Dane

Received mine this evening - it looks great and feels really robust.

I'm going to go for a Matt black finish on top of the plastic and then get some serious layers of sealant on top of it before fitting.

I'll let everyone l know how I get on with removal and fitting

Thanks Nick

Dane

Got mine back from being painted today - going to get it home, give it cure for a few days, apply some coatings (Carbon Collective platinum paint) and then probably fit over the weekend.

I'll take some photos of the finish tonight
Dane

Some pics:

Dane

Got bored and fitted it this evening!

Some obligitory before photos:

A quick lie down underneath at it was obvious I didn't need to get the jack out. So I whipped the three torx screws out a set about trying to remove the old trim.

I found out the easiest place to start was above a pair of exhausts because thats where you get the best leverage. So a mixture of pulling with one hand and levering with some plastic trim removers got the job started and then it was just a process of repeating this around the car until it came off:

Comparison of old and new:

Then, starting with the edges I started to fit the new one, looking pretty good half way through:

And after about 10 minutes of pushing, swearing and generally getting nowhere I got some wd40 and sprayed it into the gap, this helped a lot and after another 10 mins the new diffuser was clipped in. Everything lined up beautifully so kudos to Nick for doing such a good job of using the OEM fittings

All I had left to do was screw the 3 torx screws back in and I was finished, this is where the only problem became apparent, the three tabs on the new diffuser were too thick and I couldnt get enough purchase into the thread to secure each tab. Pretty easy fix , I got my hack saw out and took about half of the thickness out of each tab:

Bit of a ballache but the half thickness I left was still thicker than tabs on the OEM trim.

With this I got great purchase with the screws and got them nice and tight:

I'm not bothered by this personally, I can see that Nick has made a great product here, perhaps in order to create the most robust product possible, may have gone a touch too thick on the tabs. And in fairness one of the screws did just about bite enough to get tight.

With that the new diffuser was fitted, took me an 1:20 to do in total, including some hacksawing, easy DIY job doable on the drive with no jack.

Now for some photos (it was getting dark by this point):

Really makes the rear of the car a lot meaner and I think it's a great plug 'n play mod. I'm super happy with my choice of matt black for the colour too - I think a gloss black on a black car would look too bling-y where as this matt finish makes it look like an OEM product IMO.

I always wish people would do projects like this and then I wonder why people never get onboard when they do, so my thanks Nick for an awesome product.

I've got some photos I've taken previously that, once I've washed the car, I will recreate for some better before and after photos
Technick

Looks great, Dane!
As ever, really looking forward too seeing it fitted to your car.

Have to ask... is the Nerf dart there as an indication of scale...?

No the little shites over the back keep shooting them into the garden so it's on the table so the dogs don't eat it
Technick

Haha. I'm in a very poor coverage area at the moment - by the time my last post eventually made it across to the forum, you'd not only fitted the diffuser, but also taken and posted pictures up as well!
No doubt this post will be equally out of date too, by the time it's uploaded!

Glad the DIY fitting went well and you're happy with the end result.
Thank you for the positive feedback.

Ref the 3 tabs (and the retaining screws)...
I had previously had reservations about whether or not the tabs may be too thick, but when I test fitted the 'first off' diffuser to my own car, the original screws proved long enough.
In fact, you're the first customer to mention an issue with it (perhaps yours were shorter than usual, for some reason, and/or mine were longer than usual, or the other customers just used longer screws during fitment!?).

Anyhow, I think your car looks stunning with the new look - IMO it looks more purposeful without going OTT - exactly as per design!
Excellent choice on the finish too - I'd agree that the colour/finish combo works well and overall it looks OEM!

Thanks again for all of the feedback - I think I'll include longer screws, going forward, just in case!
