D2 S8 Gearbox Problems

Hi guys seen an S8 with 80k on the clock. I know alot have had the gearbox recond... what are the main problems with the gearbox? At around what mileage do they need doing? What should i be looking for? Last thing i want to do is pick up a car and have a 2k gearbox bill at the end... or should i look for one which has had the box done already...?
Adrian E

Is that the one on pistonheads described as a final edition, but isn't?

It would be nice if its had an oil and filter change on the box. Mines on 62k and had 2 changes. Box is good as gold. If it's not had an oil change I'd defo spend £150/200 getting it done.

Boxes have failed before 100k but most seem to rumble on to 140k before imploding IF they've had no servicing at all. One I know of on 180k was still on the original box with just 1 oil changed

Yep thats the one... is it not a final edition...??? What makes it a final edition... what do i need to look for...?
HPsauce

I wouldn't worry about the Final Edition label, just look at what options the car has and whether they suit you.
FE's had 20" wheels as standard and a limited choice of (some rather striking!) colour schemes but otherwise nothing extra special.

Final Edition was just a run out model, and as HP says in some fairly lurid shades (mine has purple leather!)

The one on PH is higher spec than an FE.  From memory (I looked at the ad after it was linked in the bargain barge thread on PH) it has heated rears, which weren't available on an FE, but otherwise spec is pretty much the same.  There's a whole bunch of tat on the dash that would have to go and I'd take the Revo remap quoted power increase with a heavy pinch of salt - it needs running on high octane fuel to deliver the full 355bhp it left the factory with.

The subtle colour does help it and I quite like the lip spoiler on the boot, which I think was a dealer fit option but rarely seen.

In terms of the box, move the shift lever from D to R and back again and it should take up drive very quickly.  You can expect a light shunt, as with any auto box.  If there's a delay then an oil change may help.  If all the gear display indicators light up red then the box is in limp mode, which may be a faulty range select switch (F125) or impending doom.  Mine did the F125 thing shortly after buying but I'd expect it to have been replaced by now if it was going to fail.

Being a late model you've got S mode on the gearbox - that changes the throttle mapping as well as the gearbox and it should take off like it's been bitten if you stamp on the throttle from 30mph or so (standing starts like that aren't going to help the box!)

It's top end of value for the mileage but if the history stacks up and the gearbox has been serviced I don't think you can go far wrong.  Don't forget Mikey's one on here for sale too - similarly decent example

You're wrong

There's a lot less torque going through the transmission and they've generally had an easier life than your typical C5 RS6. There's virtually no logic to RS6 box failures - some go 100k, others are on their 3rd box in the same mileage.

S8 doesn't suffer in the same way at all - it's got 20% less power and 25% less torque, so what is a marginal box in the RS is relatively comfortable in S8 spec

I don't mind being wrong when it's put so well

What you say makes perfect sense

Same box. But the D2 S8 is a much better car than the C5 RS 6 and worth spending the money refurbing. Loving Mikey's example. I want to own it but with three Audis, I now need an M Power Bimmer in my life. So that'll be my next addition.

Will you miss the "rush"

No way! The RS 6 is going nowhere and I've got an S1 as my next company car. I just love the power delivery/noise of the E46 M3, especially when combined with that chassis and RWD etc...

Didn't mean the 6 was going anywhere!

The S1 is a great little tool for sure.

Go for it
