D2 s8

Hi guys,

May be looking st buying a d2 Audi s8. What would a good car cost me? There really aren't many about and from what I've noticed the values have appreciated a fair bit last 18 months or so?
Facelift preferred- earlier face or later one is find.
What am I looking at for a decent one?
Professor Peach

Very few about as you say. Even fewer good ones. I watch the market now and again (when I get the itch to move on) and prices vary vastly. A very rare stupidly low mileage one advertised at the moment (12,000 on the clock) for 13K, all the way down to a stellar mileage fixer upper for perhaps under 3k. Mine isn't for sale currently, but I think I would be asking in the region of 7k - 8k. Of course if you offer me 20k, it's yours
Adrian E

Very good one was on ebay at 6k until last week, in a rare shade of green with circa 100k on the clock

Really good cars are generally 5k and up, depending on miles, condition, spec, recent work.

The 13k one is a thing of beauty - not only is it silly low miles but still been maintained properly and had all the age related bits done (there's a thread on it on A8parts forum with comments from a member who has viewed it) and is excellent spec.

Later cars definitely fetch a premium - I'd prob be looking for similar money to the prof if selling my 66k mile Final Edition in avus/mauve with added RNS-E/TV/bluetooth/Milltek.

Buy on condition, followed by gearbox service history, cambelt, tyres in order of priority and descending cost implications!

I have seen a nice 2001 facelift car around now and again which isn't yet for sale but a friend says he's spoken to the chap and he may put it up soon. I think it has under 100k miles, black interior and looks quite clean.
Apparently I'm looking closer to the 6k mark. These things hold their value compared to the equivalent s class/7 series.

We sold our facelift a couple of years back for around the 4500 mark as didn't know what to go by at the time as non were for sale! It appears that kind of money just buys quite an average motor with high miles.

Out of interest, am I right in saying not all facelift cars came with the bixenon headlights?
Adrian E

Bi-xenons were an option even on the S8. They were standard fit on Final Editions but most adverts incorrectly state cars are FEs just because they have 20s

They just have a presence and are very rare cars. I couldn't believe good ones sell for as much as they do especially if you compare to the equivalent mercs and bmws. I do like the 750i but think the s8 trumps that and is miles better looking than the s class from that era.

Only 343 left apparently (howmanyleft.co.uk), so becoming quite rare! As you've owned one, you know, they are a very nice place to spend time.

I can only realistically own one car at a time, so when I need to scratch that next itch, I'll move it on (to a good home hopefully). Otherwise I'd love to keep it for the long haul!

I assume as you didn't comment on my offer to sell for 20K, you're still thinking about it!
guymcc

i think Reg Perrett may be selling his one...

Ok just test drove one and what a lovely car.

One snag-

When I push the gearstick back so it selects 4/3/2 it doesn't select 2. It selects down to 3rd gear and the shifter sortve moves back softly but does not select 2.
All gears work perfectly on the hand controls and in auto she is lovely

Any advice is appreciated massively guys
oldscool

Yours sounds lovely!

On idle I can't select second using the gear shifter. It moves back and selects 3rd but won't select the lowest setting (2)

so do you mean if in 'D' and you push it right to go to the 'Tiptronic' controls (if that's what the official term is), you can't get it to shift down to 2nd? You can however with the steering wheel controls? I've not seen that I have to say.

More techy folks may have a comment!

This might be an older model with PRND432 and no Sport mode?
If so it could just be a mechanical problem with the linkage or an object blocking the lever moving.

Did it look like this or just have PRNDS?
Professor Peach

I've not seen one like that. What a sheltered life I lead.
Adrian E

Only very late cars get the S mode. Easy to spot in adverts

Older cars can be upgraded so if the shifter mechanism is shagged a later gate and probably a box ECU swap (dead easy) would work

Mine must be in that narrow gap between being late enough to have the 'S' mode, but not new enough to be a FE. Never realised how rare mine is. I should perhaps review my asking price. 22k.
HPsauce

Mine is too, though I think there were plenty with Sport mode, it just didn't arrive with the facelift but a year or so later I think.
Adrian E

I think late 2001 on build get S mode. All FEs have it but most facelifts built don't as a lot were built in 2000-01
