DanB5S4 - S4 B5 Avant - Santorin Blue

Hi All!

So its about time I started a 'build' thread. I use the term loosely as I wont be building anything for a while! More of a general tidy up and personalization.

After posting on here I was inbox by Andy (Rez) that he was thinking of selling his wagon. Armed with a genuine reason for sale and super honesty pitch he offered me the car well within my budget.

Fast forward a few weeks, emails and texts later and I headed up 4 hours north to buy.

Upon seeing the car I knew I had to have it. A check over the car, Andy took me for a drive nothing untoward at all. I was going home in that car ...

A long (pleasant and peaceful) drive home and she was home:

Basic Spec:

Standard bar:
Toyosports cat back
MRC Remap
Bremo discs/pads

Full service history (all stamped)
recent belts, and every fluid in the car has been changed at least ones (most twice) in the last couple of years.

First and foremost for me was a new head unit, so Facia/ISO hardness ordered. They also sent me the wrong facia kit so I'm missing the end plastic pieces. But they're on their way. I bought a Pioneer DEH-80PRS, first impressions are very good, solid unit. Easily installed. Lots and lots of adjustment and tuning options. I plan to run a fully active front end with a decent powered mono bass amp. And a few different sub setups that I can shop and change.

A few other bits like wiper blades, fog bulbs and a good clean (for those that are interested a basic 2 Bucket wash, dry, Black Hole Glaze and nattys wax):

Then it was time for my plates to go on. Whilst I was there I cleaned, decontaminated and polished behind the plate, just so I know its done.

To do list:

Fit Gauges:
-PLX DM-100 OBD Gauge DONE
-Prosport Boost Gauge DONE
Wire up dash cam 95% DONE
Short ariel
Fog HIDs (to match headlights)
Downpipes
Lowering
Wheels
Replace rear left boot trim (just needs fitting)
Audio install:
-Undecided on what front components
-Focal 4 Channel amp for front end
-Standard amped rears
-Ground Zero 10 sub in preformed box for daily duty (not too loud or the misses complains)
- 2 12" JBL GT5-12s in a big slot ported, low tunes box
-Pioneer Monoblock amp
-0awg power
-Sky High Audio 6chanel RCAs
Full machine correction, seal etc

Few issues I need to sort:
Squealing when turning right/braking
Possible replacement bonnet due to scratches
Eventually new front/rear bumpers
slightly lumpy idle (New plugs first?)

Anyway, theres a long way to go and I plan on hanging around a while! If anyones in Hertfordshire and would like to organize a meet or something soon let me know! I only know of 1 other B5 S/RS!

Looks a nice car mate
Rez

Great looking car mate. Fancy selling it?? Looking good so far Dan. Superb effort. After much investigation I discovered the lumpy idle things is a common trait. I changed so much trying to get rid of it but no luck! Just lived with it in the end
Zildjian

Tidy.

Also has RS4 grill and rear spoiler

Thanks! Yeah 7K? No, I dont think this will be for sale for a long long time! Far too much planned for that! Interesting RE the idle, just makes it feel like a bit of a beast when its idling and gently shaking the car!

I knew about the grill, didnt realize the spoiler was RS4 aswell! The more you know!
DanB5S4

Ill update properly soon I hope, but went for an MOT and failed.

Failed on Airbag light and broken rear spring.

Actually pretty happy as it could easily been much much worse. Cleared the Airbag light with VCDS Lite and KKL Cable.

RS4 Shocks and H&R 40mm springs are currently in the boot waiting to be fitted on Saturday. If all goes well it will be re-MOT'd early next week.

I've done a few bits and bobs but just waiting for time and funds to get some ramp time to fit bits now. A lot of the bigger bits I wanted to buy have been put on hold as the misses A3 2.0 TDi had an EGR fault. So a DPF, EGR Delete and remap has sorted that but eaten into my budget ...

Looks beautiful  this one pal. How much better does it look after a proper wash and clean.  Good luck with your future plans.

It was kept very clean to start with. Andy has done a top job. It just goes to show as I haven't had to clay the car at all, and a basic wash makes it look great again. I'm enjoy the weekly maintenance washes. Eventually I'd like to either replace or respray some of the body, but lots to do before that ...
DanB5S4

UPDATE!

Little bit of an update:

To get me through the MOT I fitting some RS4 Shocks and H&R Springs so she now sits like this(sorry shes not freshly washed! )

Got my PLX and Prosport gauges wired up and working. All wiring is hidden, tucked out of the way and secure.
Also I've installed everything in such a way that it is reverable with nothing needing to be replaced/bodged.
20161113_135948

I also fitted 2 USB Extensions to my headunit. As it has USB's in the rear it makes everything tidy and out of the way!

Also bought myself some downpipes a few weeks back, was sent a WRX one instead and the seller sent a courier the next morning to collect/deliver the correct ones as well as a £20 refund.
So my 3" Downpipes set me back just shy of £100 and a friend is going to weld in some Flexi's and fit them for the same in the new year:

Lastly, a photo. Low, MOT'd, and soon to be a little louder:

Superb Dan.  She's looking great. Really missing the old girl!!
Adam L

You got the suspension on quickly! She's sitting well now
Stigs dad

Great work dan . Sits a lot better now. Like the USB ports nice touch.

Beautiful looking S4

Nice 1 Dan

Glad to see you looking after Andy's old girl!

The new USB connections are a nice touch.

Looking schhweet with the new suspension on
DanB5S4

Thanks all. A few more interior bits to do like phone holder etc. Eventually it will all be pulled out, cleaned and a few bits replaced that Andy didn't get round to (I wanted to buy it too quickly for him to get round to fitting them!)

Adam L wrote:

Yeah with the help of a friend we got it done in a day. In all honesty it was done with few tools, only thing I needed were spring compressors. Once a set of 18s are on and a couple of bushes replaced it'll be spot on! Thanks for the super quick delivery too!

One thing I did do was every nut/bolt I came across I wire wheeled, broke loose and re-tightened (under load) then lightly greased. As  I'd rather they snapped while it was out of MOT than in a few months time.

Thanks Mike, It's mainly to tidy up the interior as one thing I cant stand is Things hanging out of the Head Unit etc.

Looks good, nice wee touches too.  Perhaps the wheels need spaced out a touch?

They will be changed and spaced accordingly.

Andy did give me some 15 and 20mm spacers ... which may be a bit much

Had a day off last week so decided to try and get a few scratches out of the bonnt and roof, then re-glazed and waxed the car.
Also took the wheels off to check the bolts from the suspension swap and cleaned, decontaminated and waxed the wheels, inside and out!
Nowhere near perfect but a damn sight better than they were!

Next up on the list is a set of arms, if anyone can send me a link? I've seen some on ebay for around £130?

Dan, that car is a credit to you mate. You've really taken it to the level of enthusiast ownership! Looks kick ass in the second pic. Really want it back lol

Just you wait till its been in for paint, new wheels and new suspension bits!

Honestly still gives me goosebumps driving it. Torque delivery is just sublime. Its surprised almost everyone I've taken out in it ... not to mention un-suspecting 'fast cars'
Stigs dad

Got to agree with rez on this one. Your motor really does look beautiful  now. Oh and also great upsetting these so called hi performance motors. Love it.

Great looking car Dan, you should be proud of that
Shamx1166

Great write up Dan given me some inspiration for my fl avant
Also looking for boost gauges to fit any links to one you have ?

Santorian Blue looks very nice great touches with spoiler and grill,

How's the ride on rs4 shocks did you notice a difference in ride quality?

Any tuning/map done as yet?

The boost gauge is a Prosport one (Ebay about £40) and the mount is also on  ebay for about £25, I just searched 'B5 S4 Gauge mount'

Shocks/Springs are very surprising. the rebound is a little tight so on bumps is less than comfortable, but on the whole they just feel like a tighter version of standard shocks and springs.

Its supposed to have a Stage 1 MRC Map, but theres no receipt and MRC don't have any records of the car. But its touching 17-18psi peak, so its not standard! Butt dyno says 280-300hp maybe?
DanB5S4

***UPDATE***

A Few bits have happened the last few months:

It was finally put on the Dyno, it made 306hp and 340ftlb which isn't bad. This was before the downpipes, cvs etc were done:

More recently it has had a full set of Meyle HD Front Arms, rebuilt Driveshafts ... and 3" Ebay special downpipes. Please bare in mind this is THE most involved I have been with a car mechanically on my own so I'm sure I could of done things better, faster etc

In preparation for this I bought a few tools I would need, like a triple square bit set, large 1/2" drive hex sockets, a bench grinder/wire wheel, big tub of copper grease, CV Boot pliers, brake cleaner etc etc:

Parts list:

Some High Temp paint to help seal up the heat wrap:

[/b]

Arms were painted with underseal before being installed, just to try and keep everything clean underneath:

This is the first time ive ever rebuilt driveshafts (both inner and outer):

Being a dab hand with keeping a car properly cleaned and protected, cleaning the CV Grease from the back of the wheels really wasn't that bad at all!:

I also pulled the headlights to flat, cut, polish and protect them. They werent hazed just yet but had some bad pitting I wasn't happy with:

I also fit my 'Show Plates' using Velcro so that as and when I put the car on 'show' I can easily swap the plates over

Here are a few various photos after a clean and what I use to keep it protected:

This is my 'winter sealant.' Its called Purity X by KKD, it goes on through a foam lance and saves being out in the cold for a couple of hours waxing!

Finally here is the result of a quick wash:

After all this the car drives lovely, no more knocking/clattering over speed bumps. No shuddering up driveways. Turn in is a lot more direct. No more wandering over the road at motorway speeds. And the noise ... what a noise! Pops, burbles and cracks on over run. Ill see if I can get some fly bys done soon!

So, whats left to do (Short term)?

-Have the exhaust adjusted, the middle sleeve removed and replaced with 2 bolt flanges/gaskets
-Have the Centre Box deleted
-Continue investigating the squeal on the front (Brakes were cleaned, greased and reassembled), so my next port of call is to have the Discs skimmed to make sure they are flat.
-Get under the rear and pull off the arms, clean/repaint and maybe rebush the rear.
-Have the tracking done
-Full machine correction

Which should keep me busy!
Rez

Amazing Dan. Grand job.
Stigs dad

Looking good  dan.
Did you drop the car on its wheels before tightening the front control arms ?  Reason I'm  asking  is if you didn't  this may be the source of the squeek . If you didn't  it puts the control arms under tension and they squeeking like mad. Hope this helps.

With the car on the ground I measured from the hub nut to the arch before I had even started. Then once all the arms were loosely in place, I jack the hub until that measurement was reached, then tightened everything to spec. Thanks for checking, even Murrays (Where I bought the parts from) made sure I did the same
Stigs dad

That's bang on dan. Just seen a few cars where the squeeking relates to this. Let me know when you trace the squeek as it's got me thinking what it could be now.

You and me both mate.

I think ill clean/grease the rear brakes just to eliminate those aswell.

Im heading up to an exhaust shop today to get a price on having the middle sleeve welded up ... and maybe the middle silencer removed too!

Then come payday I will look into having the discs skimmed in case they are warped.
Stigs dad

What's the suspension  top mounts like ?  They're also known to squeek.

When I put the RS4 shocks and H&R Springs on I pulled them all apart and cleaned them and they were still in really good condition. Although for the sake of £20 it wouldn't hurt to replace them!
