Debating buying an RS6 Avant. Help needed plz?

HI all I am new to this site and thought you would be the best people to ask about the Audi RS6.

Now as I have mentioned in my hello topic I am looking into buying an RS6 avant, I have always been interested in cars and liked modding them etc, track days etc.

The time has come in my life, now I'm a little older and my business is going well to look into something a little more grown up, which is practical for work (s that I can still use it to put some tools in back) but also good for the family to load up and take my wife and daughter on holiday in comfort.

A friend of mine told me about the RS6 after I was looking at the RS4's and I fell in love with them.

What I would like to know is, is there anything I need to know about them before I buy one?, any problems etc, I have friends who own their own garage and I'm pretty mechanically minded myself, so nothing should be too hard to fix etc.

I have found 2 Audi's I am very interested in, the first more so than the other as it has a lot of extra's one being the wireless headphones and TV's in back to keep the kids busy lol, the colour I fell in love with but the millage is pretty high. .

Does it matter much on these engines being a V10 or am I looking at problems.? I do want to modifiy the car further but want to know its capable of it and stay relatively reliable aswell?

This is my first one, the one I fell in love with, also my family did too lol.

The second one is this one:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classi...arranty-inc--massive-spec/1637856

My only real problem is I didn't really want to spend over 30k on a car but I do relize how much these cars were new!!! and what you actually get in that package which is a bargain nowadays. It is a car I wish to keep for a long time so I can see potential in them as a full package, I have looked at GT-rs, etc which I love to bits, but there just not practical enough to warrant the money.

My final one is this one, which is a lot more money but is a plus edition so rarer if i'm not mistaken? but I assume it won't hold its value better if I mod it?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classi...nt-plus--mrc-stage-2-2010/1705798

Its such a big leap in money and would mean borrowing some against it aswell, is it really worth the extra cost involved?

Sorry for all the questions but I really don't want to spend this sort of money on a hunch and not knowing what i'm buying I'm not willing to take the risk without asking people who own them already and know what their talking about.

Hopefully you can help me,

thanks Rob.

Also just found this one which is really cheap? I know its on V car but again is it worth a look, seeing as they say there was no damage?

Get to know this thread off by heart

http://audisrs.com/about36079.html

Will allow you to filter thru the various dealers "spec lists" and realise that 90 % of most of their lists where standard fit options.  there was one "key" facelift where the MMI went from the 2G to the 3G system.  Most folk look for the younger 3G models.  Both cars in your first thread look to be 2G MMI ones

re problems .. not that many to be honest

* Condensation in headlights leading to failed DRL - fixed via recall and tbh most cars in UK will have had it done by now

* Front wheel bearings clicking - easy to find - open windows and drive slowly forwards on full wheel lock and you will hear a very metallic clicking, most of us have had replacements with various Audi goodwill payments

* oil seal leak at back of engine, this is a "new one" but to be fair we have seen maybe half a dozen reports, so not common.  The seal between engine and gearbox leaks .. can be seen if you get under the car and drop the engine tray.  Its like a couple quid to replace the oil seal but requires the engine to be taken out to be fixed, so expect 4 figures of Audi labour charges - I have seen 16 to 20 hours work quoted

re mod - lots of folk have run 700+ HP via new free flowing exhaust (various manufacturers have been used), remap and new filters.  These 700 hp cars have runs as reliable as stock ones

General buying advice is as per any high spec car, check brake pad and disc wear, tyre wear etc  as new pads, front disks and tyres is a pretty ££.  If car has over 60K check spark plugs have been done.  If you can get access to a VAG-Com cable check for any warnings etc

Suzuka grey was white

The more expensive one on pistonheads you identified is owned by a forum member on the 'other forum'.

If you can stretch to that one, assuming not sold, I would do it. It will be fantastic. †Plus if you are looking for MMI 3G in an avant, you'll struggle to find it outside of the non-plus models, as most of the 2009 avants for sale were 2008 MY stock sat at dealers before being registered and therefore have only 2G.

My old RS6 was 2G and now I have an A6 with 3G and TBH I don't really notice the difference that much.

OH and did I mention that its madness to run one these without an Audi Warranty? †

Lol good to hear, right I have literally just come home from my local audi dealer and spoken to one of the sales team who found me a sepang blue one, only issue I found was the spec compared to others and he said if I modified it my warranty would be void , I'm sure theres some guys on here running mods but have warranty still? correct me if i'm wrong on that? I think its a 2G model aswell although this doesn't really bother me in the long run. main thing that does is the warranty as he said when it goes into have work if they are not told about a map for instance there diagnostics can get rid of the map? so you would end up having to pay out again for a new map surely? One of the reasons I want one of these is because I see the potential the cars have and the first things I would do to it would be exhaust, decats, filters and a map .

This is the one audi I have offered me any good? I wanted the tv and reverse camera though, I don't think this has it .

Wow I saw this car on pistonheads, and is exactly what I'm looking for, but a little to high on price for me, I know its worth every penny but 7k over what i'm willing to spend :'(. I could buy my dream car porshe for that , but their not suitable for us at mo either .

Hi Rob, I have a family member that works for Sytner so will ask them if they can find out what the car owes them and PM you.

Personally i wouldnt be that bothered about TV; ive had it for 2 years and can prob count on my hands the number of times ive used it.

Advance key is my favorite option on my S6

Hacking video for Vehicle in Motion (VIM) is a 4 min job with a VagCom cable .. so you can watch a DVD even without TV function. †If you really want TV there is a German company does an add on for about 400 Euro

Advance key is .. Dont need "physically touch key" to open door, just walk up (with key in pocket0, lift handle twice, dont use key to start engine, just hit the start button .. key just stays in pocket all the time

Indeed.  BUT, if you goose your drivetrain and you have mapped then do not expect sympathy.

By the letter of the law a soon as you modify the car it is no longer as it left the factory and Audi can no longer warrant it.

I have personal experience of going head to head (I have engineering background and wife is a barrister) with VW over a fault (non modded car) and we only just about came out OK.

If you modify you risk claim refusal, simple as that.
