Dan Wheldon has been airlifted to University Medical Centre in Las Vegas following a huge 14-car accident in the early stages of the IndyCar Series finale.
Pippa Mann, who climbed aided from her car, as well as JR Hildebrand have also been taken to the hospital by road.
Wheldon, this year's Indianapolis 500 winner, was one of at least four drivers whose cars became airborne in the crash, which occurred on the 12th lap of the race.
There is no information on the medical condition of Wheldon, but several other drivers involved in the accident have already been cleared from the Las Vegas Motorspeedway medical centre - including Tomas Scheckter, Paul Tracy and EJ Viso.

What sort of speeds were they doing at the point of impact?
They seem to be unstoppable those Indy cars

That did look nasty id'e be surprised if they all survive that one.
Just confirmed by Jonathan Legard on twitter that Dan Wheldon has sadly died. Sad.

Very sad

Crikey - thats really really sad.
I thought Indy was as safe as F1 these days, but I guess that at that speed, and that proximity, the drivers have got no chance at all.

Sad but unless these guys push as hard as they do then we wouldn't enjoy it. I guess their massive salaries are somewhat justified when you see this type of carnage and the risk they take. RIP Dan Wheldon
