How many S4 (B8) Avant Manual's?

I Have been actively looking for a S4 Avant Manual for a few months now. I know they are fairly rare but is there any way I can find out just how rare?

It feels like I am looking for a needle in a haystack.

I have driven a manual Avant for sale on a forecourt but it wasn't a good example. I know I will have to compromise on specification I would like.

Thanks in advance, Daniel.

In case you are not aware, from sometime in 2011 Audi stopped offering the manual option for UK customers.

Only Audi UK can tell you, and they're historically not all that forthcoming for data requests.

Have you driven an s-tronic to rule it out completely?  I think you could get the saloon as a manual for longer than the avant, as it could just dip under the most ridiculous CO2 bracket being a tiny bit lighter.

I have driven a few DSG cars, R36,R32 and recently my friends 2014 Golf R. I do like the way a DSG/Stronic car drives but I am put off by the horror stories and I would feel less worried owning a manual version.

I could be swayed if an Audi used approved warranty covers the gearbox replacement. If it did then it would also open up the search to a S5 sportback.

Thanks for the info.

Cheers, Dan.

If you avoid the earliest cars, or get one that's had a box swap already, you're on pretty safe ground.  We've had our 2011 S5 SB for 2 years, had the oil and filter changed early on the box, and had no issues at all.

Some time in 2010 Audi changed from a non-replaceable filter to a cartridge filter that's changed when the oil is done.  These cars seem more robust box-wise.  Earlier cars needing a box change always get the later design.

We took out the Audi warranty (although the provider and terms have changed for new customers since) for basic named component cover with a high excess, just to cover the box grenade'ing worry, but the warranty we have demands that only main dealers service or work on the car.  We had a 2 year service plan so wasn't a concern, but this year we've used the 2nd service and thinking we might forget the warranty.

If the renewal is similar to last year we'll probably renew as it'll give peace of mind to a future owner

We'll have a manual next week

Clarification: The filter itself did not change. Originally there were two filters and both were lifetime (non-service) items. Then Audi deleted one of the filters (which had always been planned) and made the other one a service item. This implies that really the filter should be changed on cars with the early gearboxes as well.

I agree with Adrian that the risk is with the early gearboxes and that with regular oil and filter changes the later boxes should be reliable. However my advice to 'nervous' buyers of a B8 S4/S5 is similar to that which I gave to potential buyers of a B5 S4 regarding the turbos: If you don't get extended warranty and can't afford the repair cost for the gearbox, then don't buy an s-tronic B8.

quattrodan, I'd recommend you drop Alex a pm, make sure you are first to view on the day it hits their website, I bought my B6 S4 from him, Fontain only ever source top spec FASH examples

I have just driven and purchased a stronic avant today. The car is still under Audi warranty, just. I am very pleased with the way it drives but I will be looking into an extended Audi warranty. G box oil has been changed at Audi at 36k miles.

Thanks for all the advice.
Adrian E

You didn't mess about lol
Ian_C

Congrats on the purchase!
Dippy

Was that a reluctant purchase or have you realised that the s-tronic box is actually as good as if not better than a manual?
quattrodan

I did like the dsg boxes I had previously driven and due to reassuring comments about the reliability of late Stronics I decided take a calculated risk.
It made finding the spec. I wanted a lot easier too.😉

Thats said If I had 2 identical cars to choose from but one was manual and one Stronic I would have chosen the manual.
Ask me in a year and I can immagine I will be an Stronic convert.

I'm in the same boat as quattodan - and would prefer the manual too.

They do come up - but rarely, and I don't think I've seen one with the Sports Diff in the 4 months I've been keeping an eye out for one.

Think there are about 4 on the market now (Swindon, Manchester, Chester & Watford I think) - so looking forward to hearing what Alex has

Hi Dan - care to mention which one you tried, just so I could discount it?

Manual AND sports diff??? good luck with that.

During 2014 I spent over 6 months looking for the right spec S5 (but I would have compromised on an S4 avant if I had to). In that time I only found 2 with sports diff (plus a few more which claimed to have sports diff but didn't).

That would be extremely annoying if you travelled miles to view and found the car didn't have it

Indeed - like I said - it's a wish list!

Fortunately since I was looking for an S5 sportback, a simple photo of the boot space is all I needed: For some reason there is an obvious bulge to the right for cars fitted with sports diff.

We've had one in total. Ever. Went up to the top of Scotland for it as well.

....and we hunt for them.

Sprint blue 59 plate?

Wanted that so bad!  Came up a week before I exchanged on a house

Any update on this?

Whenever I look at your website I seem to get distracted by that R8 V10.  Lava grey with matching side blades doesn't sound that desirable on paper, but in the photos, wow, just wow!

Proof that they do exist then!

That's what mine was. Early one in sprint blue. Sold it last year. At the time there wasn't massive interest. Great car.

I know; I initially didn't think much but kept going back to it then went to see it in the metal (and wrote out a large cheque).

I'll let someone else update on said manual S4...

I remember turning away manuals for just that reason; how things change!

Pleasure doing business with you Alex
Ian_C

Wow, superb spec, Phantom black with optics and privacy and pan roof and 19s must look superb!  Pics please!
j886atv

Only have one pic currently off my phone.  The plate will stay with the old owner.

I had to move fast on this as I'm away on holiday on Friday - so the 2 weeks in Spain are going to be torture waiting to collect it!

Oh - and anyone want a B5 S4 in Santorin Blue??
Ian_C

Looks gorgeous.
