How to recognise an S8 d2 facelift?

Hi Guys ,

I got offered a nice S8 d2 but i'm a little confused about the pre-facelift vs facelift thingy on these cars.

I know it's registered on 10-1999 and it has the 360ps engine but i'm confused by the different shapes of the headlights i'm seeing on the net.

This one has the B5 shaped xenon lights, but i also see headlights without the clear lenses.

Who can fill me in on this one?

There are different headlights for the D2 A8 range even after the facelift, e.g. some are dual xenon some just dipped with conventional full beams.
You need to check the spec of the car, there are loads of options even on an S8.

It will be FL with that engine - should say 40V on the engine cover.

Easiest way is to look at the switches in the centre console. Earlier cars looks like ancient Audi 80s in terms of switchgear whereas later ones are much more modern looking

If it has front parking sensors it's a facelift - they weren't available on pre-facelift

Other obvious external difference is headlight washers, if fitted. Earlier cars have fixed jets protruding from the bumper whereas facelift has pop up ones

This is my facelift centre console - it won't have the rns-e unless you're very lucky but switches will look the same under the centre air vent. Oh yeah and the instrument cluster is also night and day different in terms of perceived age

So it's the facelift allright...but it doesn't have the S8 logo in the rev counter..

It has the older style logo, could it be that there were 1.5 FL cars like the B5 S4 had?

I guess it's possible - I'm not enough of an anorak to know for sure!  Could it be an A8 4.2 badged up as an S8?  There's not much between them to look at in any case in Sport spec - aside from a few less horses the S8 will rev like crazy at motorway pace whereas the A8 is much more laid back.

no disrespect to the S8 / A8 boys but i think the PFL S8 looks better than the FL ok it wont have the kit the FL model has but it is such a nice looking car. Dont get me Wrong the FL is still a stunning car and a fantastic place to be if you got a fair drive its just my personal choice

So to tell a facelift, just look for Purple Interior..?

Looks good! i wouldn't mind it in my Noggy S4

Totally agree, and I think you'll find we're far from alone.
Sadly my PF S8 has gone to the "Audi showroom in the sky" this year after having owned her for 11 glorious years and I now have an FL version. But's it's just not the same in so may subtle ways   .

That's a very good point and easily checked. The S8 gearbox has very different ratios and will be doing almost 3000rpm at 70mph.
If it's been "rebadged" as an S8 it would require "heroic" effort to swap the gearbox, so that's pretty much the "real or fake" test.

You can also try the "Sport mode and floor it" test.

Its defenately not rebadged guys....reg check says its an S8...

It is pretty awesome lol

I prefer facelift styling just on the interior trim. Personally the exterior differences are so minor I don't notice

Try ringing a8 parts and ask them about the clocks - they should know

had a great turn out of the S8 Boys at AITP and ADI and when i grow up im having one. recently had my van off the road (my daily work bus) so my best mate Reg gave me the keys to Tommy his PFL S8. there was a shock for the system this morning driving the 40 miles to work with no heated seat also felt like i was sitting on a beer crate. God the S8 is such a superb Car

Not long now by the sound of it. But you do have to find a good one for sale first.

its the same as all these older Audis     thought my S4 was a good one but have since pretty much rebuilt all the running gear etc

Sorry, a bit late to the party...
The first FL S8's of 2000 (model year, potentially '99 build) carried over the earlier S8 logo from the PF models.
It would consist of two red angled stripes with a chrome section below with an embossed "S8" almost hidden in the chrome part.
That same logo should be in the speedo and on the bottom of the steering wheel
