How to tell an s8 from an a8 4.2?

How do you tell them apart? May sound like a crazy question but apart from the usual badges and wheels?
Adrian E

Generally alloy mirrors only on s8 from factory, but obviously could be changed either way by past owners

S8 logos on instruments

If you want to get really gritty on detail the final drive code in the service book/ boot well is different - s8 pulls more revs for given speed compared to a8
calibra_se8

Thanks, I may have found a diamond in the rough worth saving! The guy thinks its an a8 but I am convinced its an s8. It has the right badges, wheels, chrome door trims etc.
Adrian E

Ask for a photo of the label inside the service book etc and can check engine codes etc - only the s8 gets the 360bhp motor (assuming its a facelift not the earlier 340bhp?) - send me a copy if you want a 2nd opinion or general pics of the car

My service book is upstairs and don't want to disturb sleeping sprog but can check some basic details from mine for comparison?
calibra_se8

That's mega kind of you!

I should have mentioned its a pre facelift though!
Moonwalker

Has it got the GPS receiver on the boot? This was standard on the S8 including the PF, but although possible would be very unlikely on a PF A8. You could be confused with a sport A8 which would come with the same ride height/recaro seats as the S8 and the same size (18") wheels.
What colour is it?
calibra_se8

It could be that then!

Its almost like a british racing green.

The only things that couild really pick them apart is the dash clocks then?

Would it say on the v5 document?
calibra_se8

Where exactly would the receiver on the boot be? It looks like it may have xenons also.
Moonwalker

On a PF the Xenon ballasts would be behind the light cover on the back of the headlight. Post a photo and me or Adrian will be able to tell you, there are loads of ways you can find out.

1. Reg no through DVLA
2. Call Audi with reg chassis/no
3. The receiver would be on top of the boot lid, a small box thing.

Even if it isn't an S8. The A8 4.2 still comes with 300 BHP and is fairly light being aluminium, save it!
Ian_C

Agreed, lovely car, used to be collection of owners at the MK meet with D2 A8 S8s.  Le Mans buddy had a 4.2 quattro Sport for years, one of several deciding factors behind me buying the S4.

His was cactus green, Jan 1999 on a S plate prefacelift, decent spec, S8 Avus rims and HID kit added, unlikely to be the same car up in Elgin though

calibra_se8

I would love to save it! Depends on price though!

It needs a fair bit of work and I have no idea if it is MOT'd or tax'd until I go and have a look tonight!

It looks pretty similar to the one above, different style avus wheels on it though.

I will get pics up before tonight.
Ian_C

Thinking about it, those are post facelift S8 Avus 18s on a prefacelift car if that makes sense. Earlier S8 rims are like Joels (user name Nogaro_S4)

calibra_se8

It looks just like that except its green and no alloy mirrors!
nogaro s4

Also matey all s8's were aluiminium built so if its an s8 it wil have an asf badge as you open drivers and passengers doors asf=audi space frame

CraigG

All A8's were ASF, wasnt restricted to the S8 alone
Moonwalker

Yep, every A8 model from a 2.8 to an S8 is all aluminium
hiltoa

If it's the one I think it is it's definitely an A8 4.2.

In Ballindalloch?

Sorry thought i was special
Moonwalker

OP has shown me pictues of the car. It is an A8 sport with pre facelift S8 wheels on it, the sport A8 come with the S8 recaro seats (about 5x better then the ones in my RS6), ride height/steering and the 4.2 still has 300 BHP and will do 30 MPG whereas the S8 will only do about 24-5 on the same journey, worth going for.
calibra_se8

I'm away for a look in the next 10 mins, wish me luck
quattrokid

good luck.... remember the phots please:)

I bought it tonight for a fair price. It still starts and runs beautifully. No major codes on the engine/box etc. Mostly battery related.

I's like to thank all for the help, especially Moonwalker and Adrian It looks a nice example so far, just needs some TLC.

It was a guy out in the sticks selling it, he took it as a trade in and it has barely turned a wheel in a year so no doubt I am in for a few headaches
hiltoa

Nice one!

Keep us updated with the highs and lows!
Moonwalker

Happy to help, and congrats on the new car. Everything you need will be on Audipages and the A8 Parts forum. There is lots of knowledge available on the D2 and parts readily available from A8 Patts next day, great company to deal with.
CraigG

if i didnt need an estate, i think id have to buy a D2, they look so cool.
Parptoot

I've always had a soft spot for the A8/S8. Maybe oneday.
Moonwalker

The D2 S8 is the best Audi I've owned, and that includes the plus. Way too underrated.

That one looks just like my mate Niks, Jan Feb 1999 on an S plate, prefacelift, that must be the same Cactus green too.  His was slightly higher mileage when he sold, definitely not the same car as his was S62 PS*.

S8 has shorter gearing doesn't it Amar?  Remember fifth on Niks A8 4.2 being nice and long - the gearbox had a habit of kicking down to fourth on  Motorway inclines. 30 mpg might be pushing it though.....
Moonwalker

30 MPG was 110% possible just cruising at 80, I and others have had that MPG many times. That isn't cactus Ian, mine is the only known Cactus S8 around.
Ian_C

Long gearing helps - its just silly short on the V8 S4 manuals

Cannot remember the Audi paint colour of Niks and that same aged one - Forest green?
Moonwalker

I remeber Nick well, his dad Richard (?) had the 4.0 TDI D3? What does he drive now?
The S8 will only do 25 because of the gearing, it sits at about 1k rpm more then an A8 when crushing down the motorway.
Ian_C

Yeah thats it!  At one point Nik had his 99 prefacelift 4.2 at the same time as his dad Richard had his 99 facelift S8.  Richard has still got his 4.0 TDi, six years this summer, Nik bought a daily driver 2001 A6 2.5 TDi quattro about this time last year

Thanks

I won't be there, I'm away to Paris in 9 days time and won't have much cash for anything else!
calibra_se8

Got it home today and gave it a much needed wash. Still needs a good clay bar and polish it is the dirtiest car I've bought yet!!

Seems to run good, interior is in good condition and all working and I moved it around a bit and the auto box seems to work 100% fingers crossed.

Before!!

After:

As long as the engine isn't screwed I will be fixing it soon. I'll be compression testing etc. tomorrow to come to a conclusion. Very impressed so far it's very clean on the exterior, no marks to mention.
think_or_thwim

S4 and an S8.  Great family vehicles Phil??/
