Late S8 D2 minimum wheel size

So having a nosey through the destruction manual for the S8 and it reckons the supported size for winter tyres & alloys are only 17's, the car has a nice big set of 20's with about an inch of space away from the 4pots....

Has anyone stuck 17's on these and know if they fit or not?

At a glance it looks like there's no way they will fit.

Noggymike

I doubt they ever tried them.
Markv

Sure  Andrew (HP Sauce) runs a winter set on his S8,pretty sure theyre 17's.
Hopefully he will see your post and confirm.

HPsauce

Yes and no.

I had winter 17's on my 1998 PF S8 with loads of clearance but they were stupidly tight over the brembos on the 2002/3 D2 FL S8 I replaced it with so now I'm on 18's for winter (20's for summer).

The 17's (they were the Avus style from maybe an S4?) would have just cleared if there were no balance weights, maybe by a single mm!
With spacers they would probably have been OK, but that's not my style.

What version/age is your D2? I've always wondered if there was a 17" steel wheel for winter use with the FL D2 that did clear the front calipers but never seen any evidence.

It's a FE S8, 2002 - one of the last with factory 20's, 4pot brembo's and purple seats!

Hi Andy

Presume it's my old car you're referring to?

I looked at winters and as per Andrew (HPSauce) above the best option by far is a set of 18" Avus rims - either from a D2 or a B6 S4 (they're offset a little more but fit fine)

Still miss it
HPsauce

Sold my spare set of PF 18's not long ago, having had them in the garage for ages.

Ideally wanted them to go to a forum member but went via eBay in the end.

And that's a lovely car you bought from Adrian, know it very well.
paulrstaylor

I have a set of B6 AVUS fitted with 255/15 18 Dunlop SP Winters - correct spec for the D3 but should fit a D2 without issues.

I had to buy new winters for my D4 as the centre bore changed, open to offers if you are interested PM me?
B4_Andy

It is a nice motor, still not sold on the slush box but I'm sure I'll manage! Paul I think I saw them on eBay, was hoping to put a set of (flat, fat) fives on it, but I'll drop you a PM.
Noggymike

Wow!!

Never seen that interior colour before!

You should get out more, especially into the world of S8!

Wow was considering a S8 before seeing yours now it's a definite buy..

Great condition looks like new pic shots

Got any recent pics of it

Tbh 18" is lowest you would want for clearance of calipers.

I got a set of split 7 rs style 20" from sq5 which will be a decent summer or winter wheel.
B4_Andy

I dunno if the pics above are my car or not, since I'm guessing that combo is kinda rare there's a good chance it is

This is mine a few days after it was bought, there's been no combination of sunny day & clean car since to take good pics.

Hiya

The pics on the previous page aren't your car   can see an rns-d screen whereas yours has the E, and the overmats haven't got the purple edging yours has

The car I posted pics of was owned by someone called Paul iirc, used to come to the MK Meet many moons ago!

The pics are datestamped 2004 - the first year RNSE came into existence.  Paul would have been coming to the MK Meet around the same time the legend of Craigyb was (he came along from the year it started I think in 2004) so Craigy may have retrofitted the RNSE just like he did to my S4 in the MK car park!  The plate from MK pics is S8 PD*

Adrian E

Definitely a different car then - Andy's has been on private plates in the past, but not that one.

RNS-E was fitted in 2009/10 IIRC

It is very rare. It's a rare old sight! I'm waiting until summer to judge it properly, I feel that in a good strong bright light, it may work better.... Maybe..... I do like the rareness of it. It's as much of a controversial talking point as my yellow cabrio.
HPsauce

It looks lovely in bright sunlight, the Avus Silver paint especially has some varying tones, even going slightly purple at some angles to match the leather.
B4_Andy

I'll get a good polish on it come June
