Mikey's Widebody Project

OK I'm bored.   Time for a new project.  I had planned to build a 1.8t Westfield this year, but as always, I've gone and changed my mind again.

I've wanted to build a widebody S4 for a long time but I thought I'd never get around to it (actually, I've wanted to build a SWB Quattro for years but that's another thing).   Flicking through the classified a few weeks ago I saw that Kingfisher RS4 for sale and thoughts of a widebody S4 started flooding in.  I decided to buy it as a donor for a widebody S4, but I missed out in the end as I was too late.  I immediately went back onto the net, and found a slightly more expensive (but still very cheap) Avus RS with a Porsche brakes, an alleged 450hp, B7 alloys, nice black leather trim etc.  After a rather time consuming drive down to London I was again the owner of a B5 RS.

All this coincided with a red S4 being sold for spares/repair on the forum.  I again missed out on the sale but got in touch with the buyer and arranged to buy the rolling shell and a few other bits.  Tomorrow I am off to collect the S4 and the widebody project will begin.  I know some people will frown at the breaking of an RS4, but there's plenty of unloved Avus B5 dogs out there, and I will be pouring plenty of Audi love into a B5 widebody!

Here's the RS4 as it stands, and the S4 I'm using as a base.  Updates will come when I get started!

Ive only just been saying similar in daveys thread...

Ive noticed that red s4 on fleebay (if its the same one) as well. I say fair play to you. Plenty of Avus to break up

Looking forward to a few build threads on here this year. Just promise it wont take as long as Danny's TFC

Edit: maybe it wasn't the same S after all.

I'd love a wide body S4 myself to as I toyed with the idea a bit, they look soooo bad ass!

i'd love to be able to do a project like this, maybe one day.....

I can't afford to tax mine and your buying an RS as a spare donor car and an S4 lmao

Good luck can't wait to see it when it's done

All the best with the build and looking forward to the updates

good luck with the wide body project looking forward to seeing some pictures m8.

Why don't you get carbon panels off reaper? surely this would be a cheaper option instead of buying a rs

Reaper's panels don't come with a 450bhp RS4 engine/turbos, brakes, suspension, wheels, interior, headlights, etc. and lots of bits which can be sold to recoup the initial outlay.

Good luck with the build mate.

Scott, not much recouping from that lot as Mikey'll need a load of it for the WB

Brilliant project    Will this be a Noggy widebody....

I would say sorry for getting under your feet by snatching the Kingfisher, but I'm not!

However, best of luck with your build - I'm glad you went with a common old Avus in the end.
Noggymike

Great project Mike

What sort of final spec had you in mind, or is that not on the agenda at the mo?

Finally

Colour?????????
ruxy

Must admit I do like a WB, but do feel a little sad knowing its at the expense of a RS even if its a dog. High expectations here   as long as its good enough to cleanse your soul from hacking it up
pjbRs

Same here, the thought of using a real Rs as a donor is a little bit sad, but a man's got to have his toys.
I hope your leaving it red, looks great as wb colour.

Do you have your own garage/business?

Look forward to the updates.
S4Player

Mica blue widebody for me would look amazing!
pjbRs

Or will it be kingfisher?
MichaelG

Merlin purple would look amazing if staying with an Audi colour.
C J

Agree with phill, a red wb would be amazing! Look how good a misano rs4 looks!
But the choice is yours, but please steer clear of Badman ibis white!
Alps

As much as I tease the commonness of WB saloons, I do really love seeing them go through the process.

Good luck with this Mikey and I also will be Subscribing.

mikey-s

There's a lot of work to be done before I choose a colour,  but I've already thought of Misano because it would make life so much easier not having to paint the boot/engine bay etc,  plus the thought of a different colour under the carpet would bug me.    Anyway plenty of time to decide!

Final spec,  I'm not sure really,  but I want to use as much as possible from the RS4, just cleaned and rebushed etc.   I do have some RS6 turbos lined up so it would be rude not to fit them!

I don't have a garage/business but I do have very good friends with spare garage space.   I'll be doing the panel work and paint preperation at the house in the garage, it'll then go for a professional paint job.  After its been painted it'll go to my friends garage for the final build.  It'll have to wait though as I leave for work on Tuesday.

Anyway,  I picked up the S4 today (thanks JCB),  and now it's tucked away in my garage.

mikey-s

I lol'd at the painting it Kingfisher comment!   Yes I would have felt quite guilty cutting up the Kingfisher car,  and because of that I'm kind of glad I missed the sale.  I'm glad it's gone to a good home.
marc1

All WB's are at the expense of an RS, this one just hadn't been broken yet.  If it had been for sale for another week Jimbo would have snapped it up and it would be broken anyway.

Looking forward to watching how this progresses Mikey.
ASK3L

Pardon my ignorance but why go widebody S4 and not just go RS4?
Bradderz_1988

I agree merlin purple would look ace or you could go for something different and go R34 bayside blue not like i have a soft spot for the R34

C'mon Mikey! Take a cutting wheel to it already!!

We all want to see some car gore!!
stuartx

I would chop the roof off the S4 and put it on the RS4 so its an RS4 saloon not a S4 widebody, do what that guy on here did with his.
aidank1981

Now now this isn't the post fur anti widebody'ness! Plenty of widebody v's RS4 debates elsewhere! Pretty sure by the time he's bought his doner cars he's pretty committed to his game plan! (An I'm keen to follow it!)
Mark

Looking forward to following this. Interesting to see how each one evolves.

I also wonder how many there are in the UK now? But that is for another thread!!

Thats not a bad idea actually. Is it actually possible to do this without compromising the strength the chassis.
frazz82

Mikey - will you be transferring the complete rs4 engine and loom into the s4 ?
mikey-s

I'm not saying putting the saloon roof on the RS body is impossible,  but it's a HUGE amount of work, and personally I'd rather not get involved in it.

I've been looking at the car today,  and you'll probably laugh but it looks great in its factory Laser Red!

I'd like twin tailpipes, but if I did go that route I'd have to cut part of the wheel well away to fit a transversely mounted rear silencer.   Splitting the original exhaust and running a section to another tailpipe isn't good enough for me.

And..  One thing I would like to have is ceramics,  but that's all down to availability at the time.

Because it will be fecking awesome

I think it's a good idea as you will get more tuning from a complete rs4 engine as you'll start off with 380bhp as standard.

Doing the twin exhaust mod is easy enough Mikey didn't take Greg Howell long to do mines

found it on the web   does look bang on !
mikey-s

Recently got back in the country,  so I started to pull the engine on the red S4.   While underneath it I found the floor on both sides at the front has been crushed quite badly.  Looks like it has been dropped on some stands or bricks at some point.   Besides this I did some measuring of the chassis legs and it seems one or both of the legs has been pushed out of alignment.  So as it stands now I have decided not to use the red S4 as the base,  instead I'm having a look around for another car.

I do have a mint 2000 S4 in silver,  as my daily driver,  and the thought has crossed my mind to use that as the base car,  it's just a shame really as it's such a nice car.   If I don't find something soon that's what I'll do,  but until then I'm searching for another S4.
Marc R

That is very sad Mike...hopefully you'll find a good car this time.
StumpyRS4

Mike - just seen this... Good work. You may have seen these red ones previously:

Cheers Stumpy,  that US red one sure looks great!
mikey-s

So my silver S4 is now 100% the base of my WB project,   but I've been too busy to get cracking on it.  That's fine by me because the secret to a good job is all in the preparation, and I'm sure this car will be worth the wait.
ScottR

The offer of a part-ex is still there Mike!
mikey-s

You can part ex your rear bumper for mine if you really want!
Alps

I'm surprised no one who's done a WB on here has done it in red. The reds look stunning!
mikey-s

I haven't had much spare time lately, so I haven't even started on the S4.  I have however completely stripped the RS,  it's now gone to the scrapyard in the sky.   Next time I'm home I'm gonna get cracking on the panel work.

Close your eyes if you don't want to see a dead RS....

I'll regret this in years to come when this could have been worth a small fortune,  or a large one.

I did leave some parts on it,  because a) they were worth peanuts,  b) they were not sought after parts common to all B5's, and c) I have simply run out of space.   Oh,  and I had some advice from the king of breakers,  he told me which parts the simply will not sell.

Finally!    I've found the time to start the bodywork on the S4.  Still not much to post at the minute,  other than I've had a good sort out in the garage which made lots of extra space,  and managed to get the car in and start pulling it apart.   With being super picky I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair of brand new front wings,  which should arrive tomorrow.   One thing I will say,  is this car is one of the best B5's I've seen,  even underneath it looks great compared to others I've seen & owned.  It's a real credit to its former keepers.

N11LS_J

About time you kick started this Mikey!

Look forward to the updates
mikey-s

Collected the new wings this morning and got cracking.   Didn't get very far but got other things on the go as well as the S4.  Just the fitment of the front wing and doors has given me a motivation boost,  hoping to get a lot more done tomorrow!

mikey-s

Small update:  I decided to pull the new wings off and give the underside a coat of 3M 2k spray sealer,  paint and clear coat.   Once I did this I couldn't help myself,  I decided to see if I still had an ounce of talent where painting is concerned...  So I gave the outside of the panel a lick of primer/paint/clearcoat too!  First time with a HVLP gun,  and I can honestly say they rock!

It's BGT Final tonight

Why aren't you in it!
S4twiggy

First pic looks proper orange peel, can we get a close up of the finished panel? Looks spot on tbh
mikey-s

1st pic is the 3M 2k textured spray sealer on the underside of the panel - it's meant to look like that.   The 2nd pic is the outside of the finished panel,  it's a great finish but it'll  be flatted again when the whole car is painted,  I was just having a wee play!
mikey-s

Another pic.  Btw,  on the left side of the pic,  the panel does have a high gloss but the fluorescent light is masked with sheeting so it isn't as defined as the light on the right.

Searider

I see dust

But if you're going to flat it and buff it then no worries.

I've been looking at superyacht finishes recently and dust is the biggest problem the yards have.

But how to flat back and buff a yacht that's perhaps 40 or 50m long!
mikey-s

The wings aren't being polished,  they are being flatted with the rest of the car then it's having a full monty paint job by a pro painter in a heated booth.  I was just messing about.  I used to paint years ago,  but the last time I picked up a gun was maybe 2002, and it wasn't hvlp.  I'm quite pleased with the results considering it was done in my garage,  but yes it does have a few minor imperfections.

Today will see the wings back on and the door alignment finalised,  then the quarters will be getting cut off.
confusionhunter

good effort, I've seen worse com out of proper paint shops...!
mikey-s

Time for a little update.  I pulled the rear shock tower off because I want to fully seal the arch after welding,  I was shocked with what I found..

After using a polycarbide disc, some rust inhibitor, then a coat of zinc primer it looked like this.  The arch will have a coat of 3M 2k sealer, paint and clearcoat before the liner goes on, oh and a coating of waxoyl.

Time to pull the S4 quarter off.   Pretty simple really, just time consuming!

Measure once and cut twice!   It fits rather well, with good gaps.  Quite pleased, even if I say so myself.   Re shaping the inner arch was a bit of a b*tch, this needs doing to enable the fitting of the proper RS arch liner.

Oh, and I may be getting ahead of myself here, but I bagged a set of Compomotives from Coullstar, these were bought as track wheels but after trial fitting them I think they could stay on the car full time.  Will decide once the car is finished.

ScottR

Cracking job Mike.

Nice to see it being done to a high standard. The photo documented conversion with all the under panel sealing etc will make this stand out come resale in my opinion.

Awesome job!

Need more info on the inner arch modding to get the rs splash shields in. It's the little things and attention to detail like that which makes the job, even if you don't see them.

When I had the red shell I was really looking forward to having a misano WB,   but that shell was binned and now that I'm using my silver S4 I'd like to keep it silver - ish.   I've never been a fan of colour changes,  in my opinion cars are never right unless it's a full bare shell respray,  which this won't be.   At the moment I'm looking around for a decent silver,  but I'm not in a rush to choose because this paint job will be ages away - mainly because I work away.

@CJ,   basically what I did was put the S4 and RS4 inner arches side by side first,  this shows you how different they are and gives you an idea of how much you need to beat out the inner arch.  Before the quarter goes on reshape the inner arch,  trial fit the liner,  reshape & trial fit etc.  You'll soon work out where you need to widen!  Once you've gone enough you need to hammer & dolly the inner arch to remove all the hammer marks,  or not,  depends how anal you are!
