My 1998 Hibiscus Red B5 S4

I love this car. It is no show car, and the 'Hibiscus' red paintwork is of an acquired taste. But it is one of those machines - you almost feel as though the car doesn't 'want' to let you down. Not the quickest or best handling car on the roads, but character in abundance. Derive pleasure from this car literally every time I drive it and very content to have it as my daily driver.

It has a Miltek exhaust and a K and N air filter (no shame) which is enormous. No pics of the Kand N just yet. It also has the RS4 front and rear seats fitted.

I'm not sure if the car has been mapped or not, it certainly feels lively considering its age and mileage. The airbox had holes drilled out by a previous owner and the owner of Viper Tuning on here lives just up the road from where the car has lived most of it's life, so it's not out of the question.

Getting an oil change a few weeks ago.

The sub frame snapped recently due to an uprated rear anti-roll bar, so I had it replaced and have bought some 034 sub frame re-enforcement brackets to go on.

The rear discs and pads need replacing, and as the calipers have recently been freed up after seizing I thought I would get some B6 calipers to replace them. I picked these up from eBay. They're currently at the sand blasters, who are also supplying me with some new HEL brake lines.

Front and rear pads and disks to go on, just waiting on the new front disks.

Bought some red paint for the rear calipers, cant imagine it looking that good (especially with the standard fronts) but this is the plan. Definitely looking to upgrade the fronts to the Brembo calipers in the future.

Bought a B12 coilover kit from Germany. I need some new tyres soon, so after the brakes are done I will get these fitted, along with the tyres and the alignment.

That's it for now! I've also just ordered a Bosch 044 fuel pump kit from WOT Motorsport. My old pump failed and it currently has an eBay one fitted which apparently is fine for an S4 (it feels fine) but seeing as funds currently allow I thought I would get this fitted for peace of mind.

Thanks man, it's an acquired taste but there is something about them!

Had a look through your thread, yours is a much cleaner example!

Picked up some genuine Audi wheels, think they're off an A3 S Line but they're a newer RS4 style. 18" x 7.5, not exactly what I was wanting in width but they'll do for now. Need some spacers to get them to the same position as the old wheels were as the offset is different. Not sure whether to go for a wider track than standard or not.

Also got the 044 pump kit through the post.

rich86

Got some 20mm spacers instead of 10mm as after test fitting the wheels it seemed the right thing to do with regards to clearance and aesthetics.

Got the wheels on:

Questionable painting skills but almost finished the brakes, new seals and HEL lines on. Just need to modify the handbrake cable holder to fit the B5 cable.

Unfortunately one of the bolts on the rear hub wont nip up, so need a new hub. Or maybe try helicoiling it.

Looking good so far

I think the A,B,C,D exterior pillar trim bits need a refurb along with the roof rails, couple that with a tyre detail and maybe a drop then she will look awesome IMHO

Looking good mate as Mike said don't pillars spray them gloss black
rich86

Cheers guys

I was looking into spraying plastic bits the other day, so spraying the exterior pillar bits is definitely on the cards.

I also still have the B12 coilover kit to stick on, which I think drops it 25-30mm all round. So it should sit better once they're on.

I have one of these, lovely stuff

Haven't managed to do a whole lot recently due to work and short nights. Fitted the Bosch 044 fuel pump into my old fuel basket with the 034 kit. Here's the 044 next to the standard S4 pump:

New 044 pump (yet to be fitted):

Received a TRW control arm kit from Jason at All German Parts. Great guy to deal with and will be using them again. Also got new bearings for all 4 corners.

Havent washed the car for ages but still sits quite well. Bought a 3M headlight restoration kit from eBay. Followed this guys video:

(This photo is before polishing)

Obviously different light, but pleased with the results. Not a lot I can do with the indicator I don't think.

The white marks underneath are just from polishing.

Stockpiled a load of parts recently, looking forward to putting it in the garage to get them all fitted. Would love to do this myself but working in car parks and at this time of the year is never ideal.

Got my car back today from the garage today, haven't had a proper look at it yet due to the weather but it's had the following done:

- 2 new lambda sensors
- New Bilstein B12s
- 4 x new wheel bearings
- TRW front control arm kit
- ABS sensor
- Rear sub frame strengthening brackets
- H and R rear anti roll bar
- New discs and pads all round
- Replaced rear calipers with B6 S4 calipers
- 1 new rear hub (damaged thread on the old one)

The front track rods were seized and the inner tie rods also need replacing, so I need new tie rods before I can fit the track rods and say the whole front suspension is done.

Also need new rear bushes, I'll probably just get the complete arms.

No 4 wheel alignment just yet due to the above reasons, so I cant really rate the Bilstein's yet.

The rear brake upgrade required larger handbrake cable lugs, so I made some up at work (inspired by another thread on here somewhere). I wired out the centre section. They seem to have worked.

The garage mentioned it was difficult to get the handbrake to fit in terms of length though. Does anyone know if an RS4 cable fits? I've heard they're a bit longer. The handbrake currently feels absolutely fine, but the warning light is constantly on.

Also made up some 9mm spacers to space the carrier away from the knuckle so the discs sit centre in the calipers.

Replacing the lambdas has been worthwhile, one had failed according to vagcom, and the other's plastic connector in the engine bay had fallen down and melted itself on a manifold or exhaust part. The engine certainly feels smoother.

Looking good rich ,  a colour you don't  see often.  A real street sleeper.   Any photos of the  suspension  drop ?  Should look tons better now.
rich86

Thanks mate, I've actually warmed to the colour now, prefer it over the others even!

No photos of the suspension drop yet, it actually looks the same to me at the moment. A friend has told me it may take a week or so to settle? I'll check in a week and get some photos. The B12s are supposed to drop the car around 25mm if I remember.

Had a quick look through your thread, that's a very clean S4. Are they Samco hoses? If they are, what do you think of them? I ordered a full set a few weeks ago as I've got boost leaks all over the place.
Stigs dad

Yeh the suspension  will take a week or so to settle but you've bought a great set up there.  Eibach  springs ride a little hard for some people  but not for me. The car should now corner a lot better now.  The hoses were done when I bought the car so I couldn't  tell you who makes them ,  they are good quality though.  Although  I don't  think  there samco.
Thanks for the nice comments on my Noggy.  Had it now for 3 months and started to get a few bit's done which I wanted to change.  Done all the front grills to rs ones and fitted face lift front lights. Going to sort a few bit's of paint out then onto changing all the bushes  for silicone  ones.

Yeah I've heard good things about the Bilsteins and my brother had them on his old golf, which I enjoyed, so I'm looking forward to getting the rear bushes and alignment sorted.

Yeah yours looks really well. It makes me realise how bad my engine bay looks when I see yours. I like how you've still got part of the standard air intake leading to the cone filter.

Thanks Aidan. I'm thinking of vinyl wrapping the pillars, I'm not too clued up on it (with painting either) but I'll see how it turns out. I'll probably have to get the roof rails painted!

Yeah the bank balance isn't looking too clever right now. I sold my van to buy this on a whim about 3 years ago. I've already got a 'weekend' car in the garage and this was supposed to just get me from A to B (probably not the wisest choice for that purpose). But the car has grown on me so here I am pouring money into it

I've had a soft spot for Hibiscus since I bought a cheap and scruffy tdi dagdag in 'brown' and polished it up!

Thanks mate, yes I was surprised how well they came up!

The splitter is a Seat Leon splitter I got off eBay for about 50. There's a few guides on here for fitting them. It involves just marking up with some masking tape to get it centre, using self tappers to attach it, and a heatgun if you have one to mould it to the right shape near the wheels. And cutting off the overhanging edges.

I know what I'll be ordering later thanks
