My B5 S4 Widebody project car

Recently bought this 1999 pre facelift S4 for the princely sum of £1000. I bought it without looking at it as it was so cheap and was up in sunny glasgow and im right down south. So just took a chance and paid a car transporter to go and collect it.
As i received it

Silly badges

Dented doors

Dented front wing
Foxmeister

Still cant believe that price Lee, amazing, im in Glasgow and woulda snapped that up had i seen it.

The plans sound good anyway and will take care of the bodywork for sure, what colour are you going for thou???

I take it the engine has been properly looked over and given the all clear?

As said mate, will get those pics sorted for you asap. Cheers.
LeeT

I managed to find some replacement doors in the right colour for £20 each and £20 for the wing too. This was only a temporary measure as this S4 is going OEM RS4 widebody Got some RS6 reps in 19's which i need to refurb when i get a chance
but look better than the crappy 16's that were on it. Also removed the silly badges and put a B6 S4 rear badge on there. Also sourced some RS4 facelift lights from Rennsport on here which really tidied up the rear end.
Heres how it stands at the moment with the replacement doors and wing and after a quick wash and wax. Still a bit scratched up but will be getting a full respray when i go widebody

Foxmeister

Fantastic change so far.

What colour will the widebody be???
pjbRs

I paid a little more then you for mine, but in better condition, a lot of car for the money, can't wait to see how the widebody comes along.

Thanks Mick, car was in East Kilbride which i believe is Glasgow ish? Advertised on Gumtree. Im undecided on whether to go Ibis white or just get a fresh respray in Ming blue the original colour. I can sort the engine myself mate. It will be coming out as my aim is 500+ bhp So some new turbos, intercoolers, injectors etc etc. I have a full folder of receipts including fairly recent cambelt. I just cant get my Vagcom cable to connect at the moment though. Ive got the three beep ABS fault and airbag light on dash. Also the previous owner did mention there is a lambda sensor fault which would explain why it smells very rich on start up. It has a Full Miltek too including fully decatted down pipes.

I managed to source a centre armrest for the price of £20 delivered to my door including the lower console. Its cloth but think i'll wrap it in black leather for now.
Also got a 60mm electrical boost gauge to go into the center vent. K&N panel filter and airbox mod to do tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks mate, so far i have both rear doors, both bumpers and one front wing, soon to be both eh Mick? Have sorted the front doors too, just got to try and collect from Rennsport when i get 5 mins.
Oh and i fitted RS4 gearknob also from Rennsport yesterday. Bought some rs4 alloy roof rails from Dann on here too which SHOULD be here monday
If anyone hears of the rear quarters, sideskirts, fuel flap and arch liners for sale give me a shout.

East Kilbride is where I grew up and all my family still stay,Lewis aka milkybarkid still lives there

Slightly off topic, if those are A3 16s and the tyres are knackered, we are looking for a set of OE alloys for the Sportback to wrap in winter tyres.  Post or pm if you still have them but don't want them, be very interested depending on condition and price, Sportback resides Southampton direction, so not too far from yourself, can collect.

Hi Ian, they are A3 16's however they are not a full set. There were 3 later alloys and one ealier one. The earlier one had a different offset to the rest although look identical. I was just going to get my mate to take the tyres off and weigh them in at the local scrappy. Yours for £30 if you want them which is what i will get for scrap

Thanks for your honesty.  The ideal would be to find a fourth one to match - will have a search tonight as they are not the most common style.  What condition they in - pretty kerbed and needing a refurb?  They look pretty tidy in the photo.

Dont think theres any kerbing on them but there are some scratches from storage. Its up to you, if you want them let me know and i'll keep them to one side. Think a couple of the tyres are pretty good too
LeeT

Managed to find a spare hour today so thought i'd get my new boost gauge cut into the centre dash vent. I think it came out pretty good. Ive rebated the fins so its sunk into the grills. Think it'll match a treat when i get some of those ebay chrome dash rings. Hopefully will find another hour during the week to get it plumbed and wired in.

If you have them nearby and can check easily, whats the offset of the matching three?  ET 50 hopefully.

Editted to add........... Quick glance online shows the same design being available on the C6 2004 onwards A6 with a 35mm offset.  Appear to also be 7 inches wide not 6.5 as per A3.

Cheers,

Ian

Hello Ian, just had a quick look and they are 16" x 7j ET42

ET42?  Will have a search and let you know - could be difficult to find a fourth alloy to match.  What's the fourth one just out of interest?

the 4th was 6.5" wide and the ET was something like 50, can check tomorrow to make sure. I know it was definitely a higher offset as the previous owner actually ground my front caliper down to get it to fit Can you believe that? All he had to do was swap the wheels around
Ian_C

The 6.5 inch wide ET 50 wheel is the A3 fitment.  Sadly you only have one of those, hence at this point I should therefore admit defeat!

Cheers for checking anyway.

Ian

Done a couple more bits today.
This little beauty turned up yesterday so couldnt wait to get it fitted along with some ebay chrome dash rings

Including the price of the car ive just had a quick work out at £3490 fully resprayed in a different colour. Obviously something will need sorting with wheels

Avant in theory should be easier if i decide to replace the whole rear quarter rather than make a cut. I could take the rear quarter light out and then make my join under the C and D pillars but im thinking of cutting into the panel as per the saloon method. I will be looking at starting these in a couple of weeks time on my next weekend off so will decide then   And no i havent done them before, im just confident in what i do. If all else fails, my old man is an ex aircraft welder

Managed to get my old interior out and get the new rs4 black leather seats installed today but the pictures came out really grainy for some reason so will get some pics tomorrow after i have done the passenger side front annd rear doors. My 6 came back from paint though and im very happy with it. Again the pics are grainy but you get the idea

LeeT

Got the passenger side doors on today but still need to align them a bit better

And the RS4 interior

Just tried a door card on to see what they look like with the rest of the interior. (its wet in the pic)
LeeT

Had 3 hours on the car this weekend so didnt really get much done but i did manage to fit thr RS4 tailgate with spoiler, align passenger side doors and offer up the passenger side skirt. Still got alot of work to do on tailgate as its facelift and my car is prefacelift. Differences being electronic locking mechanism versus pneumatic. Its not a straight forward swap at all but im going to sort it!

You can say that again
Both rear quarters are on now. All the welding on the external side of the arch has been done and ive ground them back, primered and given the joints a skim of fibreglass so the filler used for finishing doesnt sink. Still need to get it jacked up now, both wheels off and get the inner arches welded up and then seam sealed and stone chipped. Ill add a couple of pics later on but not much to see really.
Im still having trouble aligning the front drivers door though. It closes in too far at the bottom. You can see this in the pic below. Any suggestions anyone?
BennyBoo

Coming on there Leet

It's not the rear door that needs adjusting 'in' is it..?

BennyBoo wrote:

no mate, its definitely the front door. You can tell when looking along the line of the sill. Its weird to say the least. I changed the bottom hinge but no joy so i might give the top one a go and see if that helps. I'll be spending all christmas on it getting all my panel gaps right ready for paint
mikey-s

I would have perfected the alignment on the wings and all the doors before welding the 1/4 panels in position.  You best hope there's enough movement on the rest of the panels, and that the wheelarch area of that 1/4 doesn't need adjusting.

I would seriously take both window frames off those doors, it'll make alignment so much easier, and if you run out of adjustment you can always 'twist' the doors. That's normal practice even for decent panel beaters, and you won't see the twist in the finished product.
LeeT

Just a few progress pics but nothing exciting

I Hear what you are saying but i had the rear door aligned perfect with my original rear quarter and am more than happy with the alignment on this. Its 100% the front door which needs adjusting like you say and twisting the door is what i am going to try next with the door frame out obviously. There is only backwards and forwards adjustment on the hinge end of the back door so would have made no difference to my rear quarter alignment at all.
I appreciate the input and its good to know panel beaters and the like would also give the door a twist.
LeeT

Finished off the rear quarters today. Well ive done as far as im going to do. Ill let the bodyshop finish all the smoothing out and filler work as although i can do it, they can do it twice as quick and will make a better job of it. Just need to space the front bumper shocks out now so the bumper lines up perfectly with the wings, lower the exhaust so i can get the rear bumper on, fit the facelift bonnet and then its off for paint
Bought a nice set of Porsche Cayenne turbo calipers to go on too. Just need to get some ML55 AMG discs as the ECS ones are knackered and sort out some brake hoses.

Nearly ready for paint now. Just got to remove the door seals, audi badges, roof bars and aerial and fit the drivers side wing bracket.
Bought and fitted a facelift bonnet to finish off the full facelift panel conversion. Genuine RS4 grill and facelift headlights trial fitted too. Im seriously going to need to sort the wheels asap and lower it

Have to agree, pictures do it no justice at all. You really do need to see it in the flesh if you haven't, and I can imagine it to look awesome on your RS4 along with black wheels and wing mirrors! But each to their own    Looking forward to seing the end result.
