My Dreamy Spyder Weekend !!

Well, the great crew at Southend Audi have been good to their word and given me their R8 Spyder for an "extended test drive" this weekend.

I'll give a more comprehensive write up on Monday when she's gone but in the mean time a couple of pics!! Suzuka Grey and R-Tronic (as requested by me!)

And with my sweetheart in shot...

the spyder is absolutely awesome!
Love them wheels. Capristo exhaust...now the spyder sounds so much better, although a little bit more noise doesn't hurt
the spyder performs so much better than the older version.

Yummy

Still can't believe you've got a very similiart engine in your 6 with 2 chargers strapped on

Looking forward to the review.

Ok, here goes: it was with sadness I took the R8 Spyder back this morning, this was really surprising as I had persuaded myself prior to the weekend that this would not be the case and I would have likely ďhad enough of it by thenĒ. In comparison my last encounter with a ďsupercarĒ was a weekend with a Feza F355 F1 a few years back and I can sincerely say after a day I was tired of it. The Ferrari was like a very drunk mate in the Bar when youíre sober... loud, embarrassingly drawing attention and hard work to the extend you canít wait to get shot... the Spyder draws attention for the right reasons... this oneís your drunk mate whoís still fun to be round, and the chicks dig him!!

The Spyder is seriously good looking from every angle with the roof down and not so bad with it up tbf... every friend and family member I caught up with over the weekend (many!) agreed that it is drop dead gorgeous and you find yourself just standing gazing at it, mesmerised! You get used to people pointing mobile phone cameras at you after a while. The only shame with the styling is the fact you canít see the engine as with the coupe due to the roofs stow area, releasing the boot gives you a glimpse of the back couple of pots and thatís it! Itís a shame because as we know every petrol head wants to see the lump! Sad soul I am I actually cleaned it on Friday (learn a lot by that me thinks) and build quality as we expect is faultless, the interior is a nice place to be comparable with the 6 but there is NO storage space in this car, you would struggle to get a weekends worth of clothes for two in here!! With the roof up itís pretty quiet but if Iím honest I drove with the roof up once and even then I had the rear window down, roof up/down on the move to 31mph 19secs bla bla all good.

So, did I mention the engine note... OMG!!! I had previously test driven a coupe and was impressed by the sound of the N/A 5.2L V10 in comparison to my Millyíd C6 RS6 and from in the cab I had put in behind the likes of Lambo/Massaratti & Fezza BUT with the roof down itís right up there with them I promise. The throaty Induction growl at low revs makes way for a heady V10 howl until just shy of 9k rpm at which point everythingís now coming at the bonnet at increasing rate! Now I know that my 6 is faster straight line (3.6ish sec to 60mph as against the R8ís 3.9sec) but it doesnít feel it, the R8 is just electrifying on ALL your senses off the line, brilliant but this is where I sway:

The R-Tronic box in the R8 is the ONLY let down... The R-Tronic in the RS6 is, in my opinion, a fantastic box, smooth as silk changes all the way through the cogs however you are driving, both in Sport and Drive modes. OK itís not on par with the DSG/S-Tronic but itís pretty damn good... shame is though in the R8 itís not near as good as the 6ís and the £125k Spyder deserves much better when you look at the likes of GTR and Porkers PDK!! The R8ís R-Tronic doesnít hold the car on a slope, it hesitates to engage when shunting (taking some getting used too) and calm driving changes are not calm. You find yourself massaging the throttle to force low rev smooth changes rather than the box working for you, ok this car is designed to be driven hard but even then auto changes have a pause as gears are switched and thatís not fun first time at full chat on a bend. If you sit in traffic and take your foot of the brake for a period it drops to neutral, quite embarrassing when you go to pull off with that howl (the 6 will just sit). In its defence, drive in manual using the paddles and you can pick your changes to force a more silky ride but thatís not the point of auto aye? you should in my opinion have the best of both worlds. The change from 1st to 2nd at flat out is bordering agricultural with ESP flashing (or all wheels spinning-up if in Sport/Off) but thatís all good here and 2nd to 3rd and onwards well, your supersonic now hold on tight! Downshifts are bang on with the ďblipĒ from heaven! Did I mention the engine note!!??

Handling is sublime, seriously, Iím no Lewis but this car is awesome. It is so planted, balanced and accurate I have neck ache today, I did not get it out of shape once and never did it scare me (those whoíve been in a car with me know Iím no Miss Daisy!) I found myself throwing it harder and faster into bends/roundabouts (even swerving across three lanes of an empty Motorway like an F1 driver warming tyres) just trying to find its limits and I think my face was coming off! Every person I gave Px ride came back saying at some point they were scared, yep not pumped with adrenaline but scared as without knowing the limits I knew they couldnít fathom why weíre not in the hedge, and as for the brakes, well. Didnít have Ceramics but apart from extended track use I canít see why youíd need them, the brakes on the 6 are pretty good but with 400Kg less the R8 can have your eyes on stalks. From any speed a full emergency stop is just amazing and again the car remains totally stable but then youíd expect that with mid-engine, such a short wheelbase and even balance. Would love to track one of these, Px rides at Castle Coomb must have been seriously exhilarating!

OMG didnít expect to write that much babble but hey... nope I wouldnít swap it for the 6 Dave, not a chance! A lotto win would still have me with the 6 first and the Spyder would be up there for sure, especially with S-Tronic/DSG. I know there are some great supercars about but Iím a Quattro man now and enjoy the feel and grip that Quattro gives.
PDK Porker turbo rag top?... park them next to each other, itís a no brainer for me!!

So thanks again to Mark & Matt at Southend Audi, top blokes as always... was interesting what Matt said to me this morning whilst chewing the cud... when the Audi sales guys get together and talk cars, the RS6 is first in the garage all else follows!!

But OMG what a car, did I mention the noise!!
StumpyRS4

Seriously jealous there Nige...

Couple more...

Not much goes in here...

Good write up..

I loved the time I had driving the V8, but the V10 sounds awesome in comparison
AliGod78

That was the thing that struk me, the lack of ooogalige at the engine possible, and the exhaust tips. Sure they do a full milky for that, or they will soon enough.

This looks VERY fun, bravo on getting hold of one.

Grrrrr   Did I ever say I think I hate you

Fantastic report .. thanks

Thanks for the write up. Glad it was impressive. I do like the looks very much.

Hey G don't feel bad, you and many other last weekend I'm sure.. the 6 will get a good once over at the weekend to make up for my adultery!

The friend who borrowed my car for the weekend has fallen even more in love with it than he already was... he has a new highly spec'd C63 AMG to collect from MB factory on 30th Nov, could be a cancelled order on the horizon!

Had a sneak at a nice black RS5 in Southend Audi, looks good I have to say... will be giving the demo a blast soon I hope, wanna try the S-Tronic box but the 6 is defo a keeper for now!!

Fantastic write up, made me want one even more.  Was taken out with the Audi driver at ADI the other weekend(Chris something!) in the R8 V10 coupe and could not believe the handling on these things, fantastic to say the least!!
