My project for 2011!

Since almost everyone have a project thread I guess I need to get started as well!

The car had RS6 hybrids installed along with full autospeed exhaust with tublar manifold, 3" dp, 200 CEL cats and 2x2,5 catback.

I bought my beauty in July 2010 but have only had it on the road for 1 month before I decided to repaint the car. But it was a fun summer with true German power!

After I started taking the car apart I found things that you dont wanna see!

arotished

I started taking the hole car apart and repainted the car in the same color as was, Lamborghini Ballon white. (special pearl white). I got the car back from repaint and have started to install everything.

After I fitted the RS4 B7 breaked the old wheels didn't fit so I needed new wheels fast and I went with these (regret it as hell but I got them cheap). In order to remove the blink blink effect, I have sent the wheels for paint, gonna go for white center and keep the chrome lip.

After a few days, the car was almost assambled.

cantbassed

nice cars mate!!! is that a m5?
white really suits the rs4's!!! looks like a nissan pearl white

is the things found pre accident damage?
arotished

Meanwhile, I bought a few other goodies for the car.

RS4 B7 Fornt and rear

Wagner Intercoolers (RS4 version)

Bilstein PSS9

Thanks! It's a M5. 400rwhp and 550nm of fun! It's Lamborghini balloon white like I stated, pearl white
cantbassed

my mistake!! looks fantastic? what car do you prefere?
arotished

Next thing on the list is to get the hotchis sway bars along with RS2 end links

I have also bought the Dual 044 setup from 034 motorsport and a set of 630cc Siemes DEKA injectors.

naturally aspirated engine and RWD all the way
arotished

Since I have done so much on the car, I decided to take out the engine and upgrade the engine with rods, valves and probably pistons along with turbos. Even thought the engine is newly overhauled by the previous owner. (March 2010). If I'm converting to a 3liter is up to the my money god.

I just need to get a engine lifter out to my workplace and the engine can be taken out, everything is taken off (cant wait until I'm gonna put everything together!!) Along the way I'm changing of sensors, solenoids, valves and pumps I can come across. I'm also gonna reinforce 1st and 2nd on my gearbox since I have the engine out along with the JHM gear package.

The big question is what turbos to go with. I'm almost 90% sure that I'm gonna go for LOBA motorsport turbos, either LO600 or LO700 but I wish there was more dyno plots out there so see how these turbos perform in the real world.
supersi

Pearl white paint looks so nice, I think best looking rs I've seen for some time, need more pictures please
Adam

Love it, great colour.
bam_bam

Tasty, reeeeeal tasty.
audimad100

love the pearl white looks Fecking awesome
MathiasS

One word = WOW !

Good luck with the project!
Nez

Nice car with very good colour I love
peterp1972

Love the car and good luck with the Project. Why don't you get your RS6 turbos upgraded by Loba. I've haven't really had a chance to play with mine since the MRC RR but they felt really strong.

Loads of torque
arotished

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm gonna sell my RS6 hybrids and just go for new turbos, probably LOBA's LO600 or LO700. They have excellent customer service! Micheal are really taking his time on answering question and SI are good with the LOBA section.

But, I cant say that TiAL 770 are totally ruled out since there are more great results on these turbos on the nett.
peterp1972

The 770's do seem to be producing good figures on the 3ltr builds. But so did Musty with the K24's. I do think the Loba 750's would also be good on a 3ltr.

Tough bloody choice. I'm glad you're going first
andream88

i'd try the LO600.

However after months of researches and discussions with many tuners (Darius included) i've come to the conclusion that for a daily driven RS4 the K04 hotsides are still the better choice.

That's obviously if like me, you don't want to lower the compression ratio and you want to retain good torque in the lower rev range (even off boost).

If you want to go for all out power, and don't care about daily driveability...than the RS6 hotsides would be ok
peterp1972

I remember reading that Loba were recommending the LO700 to achieve the same as RS6 stage 2 turbos and around 650PS.
I think the LO600 would not be enough for a built RS engine.
aemkej

Hey arotished,

Thanks for the compliment. Always busy but trying our best I still owe you a reply by email

We have been trying to find a good setup incorporating the best compromise between power and torque. I think we already agreed the LO600s are too small for this project.

LO700s are a good choice. I know that we're lacking good dyno plots to show here, but I happen to have a customer from Germany who just had his RS4 modified:
2.7L, rods and pistons replaced, intake camshafts, LO700s incl. 60mm intake pipes and intercoolers, exhaust manifold (mTm), fuel pump and injectors as well as clutch.

Note: He did not replace the exhaust valves and springs in this case. We'd highly recommend doings so though.

His results: 648PS / 786NM
0-100: 3.7s // 100-200: 6.4s // 0-200 10.6s // vmax: 321.3

We've asked him to share his dyno plot with us. Once we have it, we will post it for sure.
arotished

Thanks Micheal and all the rest for the feedback! I know we already agreed the LO600s are too small BUT, i'm jut thinking out load. It's a hard decision, like Andream points out, I dont wanna loose much of the low'end/middle-end power and can sacrifice top-end to archive that. The dyno plot would be good to se if you can share it with us.

648PS / 786NM are engine power, what drive train lose are you operation with? Like I said my current system have 426HP / 430NM on the wheels with full torque around 3700RPM.

LO530/600 are RS4 Hotside? and LO700/750 are RS6 hotside?

I think that I'm gonna drop porting and camshaft as this will retard the spool-up (slower exhaust speed into the turbosright?) Or should I just port the intake side and just use a diffrent intake camshaft to allow more air into the engine?

Attached is a closer pictures of my current turbo/manifold. I'm really happy with the current system but the need for speed is to big!

MathiasS

His results: 648PS / 786NM
0-100: 3.7s // 100-200: 6.4s // 0-200 10.6s // vmax: 321.3

These numbers make me all warm and fuzzy inside    !

If it were me and I would go ALL OUT on a build I would take the biggest Turbo setup of em all and sacrifice another couple 100 rpm's to hit 700+

But hey that's just me
andream88

Hi Micheal.

I've compared PeterP dyno plot (Stage2 RS6 turbos and lowered compression ratio) with a similar car (tubular exh manifolds, uprated intercooler etc) running K04/RS6 hybrids and std compression ratio.

Even though there's approx 100bhp between the two up top in the rev range, the off boost power and turbos spool up times are in favour of the less powerful one.
BHP isn't everything guys. On a daily driven car....torque is what makes it feel fast.

The hybrids equipped car has full torque 500-700nm earlier.
andream88

If i were you, arotished, i'd keep the engine as it is now and would let RICH@Viperbl or Mihnea@MRC work their magic on the ECU.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
arotished

I have thought about it but I have decided to go head and do the engine as well. The car will be parked since the snow have reached Norway so then I have a few month to play around with it.

Viper is already on the case and will be tuning my ECU for this project. Thanks for the tips Andream in viper!

What's a RS6 stage 2? (OEM RS6 with billet compressor wheel?) Peterp(1972) have TiAL 605 installed if you where talking about his car.
andream88

PeterP doesn't have TIAL 605s anymore on his car.

He is now running RS6 stage 2 turbos, which are plain RS6 turbos with modified compressor wheel and clipped turbine wheel IIRC.
arotished

Ahh, I must have missed that!
James

Tial didn't last too long...

The difference between LO600 and LO700 is very little. Almost not noticeable. I can only tell you from my own experience with our HULK project (and you know we've done all what could be done to the motor) that positive boost kicks in at around 1.800 rpm (0.5 bar at 2.200 rpm on the 3L) and gives you plenty of useable torque along the entire rpm range. You never get the feeling there's a big lag in the low rpms.

Dyno plot will be provided a.s.a.p.

Yes, engine power. Need to get the dyno plot. I can only estimate between 80 and 90 hp loss.

arotished wrote:

LO530 = modified RS4 hotside
LO600-LO750 = modified RS6 hotside

Which manis do you have? And please measure the inlets' diameter. That will help giving you a precise statement.
arotished

Thanks again Micheal! But there must be some changes do justify the price and 100hp more?

I think that his car will be the same as mine, so that dyno would really set me of to your turbos!

I'm running these manifolds from autospeed.

I can measure the diameter when I get the engine out of the car.
arotished

Another question, as I'm gonna take out the engine for the first time, any tips/hint that you guys recommend?

arotished wrote:

LOL, because I said "The difference between LO600 and LO700 is very little. Almost not noticeable"? I meant the spooling behavior, of course

LO700 and 750 have a special 60mm inlet, the 750 also has a unique compressor wheel.

Which turbos are you currently running?
arotished

Wagner Tuning Intercoolers, RS4 version

X34 intake, very happy with it!

This RS4 sedan belong to the guy I share my workshop with. Been working on this car for 3 years. Just to busy to finish it up. Currently it has a 1.8liter 430hp installed but he is thinking of installing either a RS4 B7 or a Lamborghini V10.

the rs6 stage 2's done by TD have 60mm inlets too as far as i am aware.

No problem, can easily happen!
arotished

I'm gonna stiffen my drive-train up and consider ordering these items from JHM

034 Motorsport B5 A4/S4 trans mount (street density)
JHM "Solid" Linkage Upgrade
JHM Short shift (Already have it)
Sway Bar End Link (Metal) Left and Right Rear
Sway Bar Kit - H-sport (Hotchkis) for B5 Chassis
Stern Solid Rear Diff Mount (Power Ring), B4/B5 Chassis
Stern Rear Diff Carrier Mount Bushings, Poly, B4/B5 Chassis
Apikol Rear Diff Mount, Polyurethane, B4/B5 Chassis (Blue)

Is there anything els I need? I'm gonna get a drivetrain stabilizer.

Also, do I need Stern Rear Diff Carrier if I buy the Apikol Rear Diff Mount?
MathiasS

I have:

034 Snub mount
Stern Sold diff mounts
Stern Solid diff carrier (power ring)
JHM Shifter + Linkage
JHM DTS with poly mount
RS4 Engine mounts
RS4 Gearbox mount

I must say the 2 Stern producst I bought (Mounts and power ring) made the biggest difference in the"clunk" in the back and felt they stiffened everything up very tight!
arotished

Thanks

I wonder if I need the Stern powerring if I get the Apikol Rear Diff Mount.
arotished

Now that I'm gonna take out the tranny, is there any upgrades that can be done to the front/rear diff?
OdinS4

You could try the JHM 4:1 center diff mod.

And you don't need both Stern Power Ring and Apikol Rear Diff Mount, they are essentially the same thing.

arotished

Thanks Odin.

Doesn't the RS4 already have 4:1 center diff?
wjn

The B7 yes, the B5 no.
arotished

ahh, thanks.

What does the B5 have?
auda

The rs4 b5 has the 4:1 senterdiff. rs4 b7 has 40/60.
arotished

So no need to upgrade the drivetrain?
auda

Might be worth changing the rear diff, its easy to get wheelspin on the innside rear wheel in corners.
arotished

just the rear diff? Thanks. What diff would be good?
wjn

auda wrote:

You are right, I mixed up the 50/50 of the B5 with the 40/60 of the B7. Has indeed nothing to do with the 4:1
loomx

B5 RS4 and S4 have the same centre diff, they are both 2:1, so at full limit the B5 diff can go to 66.7/33.3 or 33.3/66.7

I would say do the 4:1 centre diff mod, and fit a rear limited slip diff, this would be there will always be more traction at the rear, so the centre diff will be more inclinded to bias power to the rear wheels, up to a 20/80 split
arotished

Thanks Loomx!

Where to get the limited slip diff?
arotished

Engine is out and teared apart!

Now I need to talk to LOBA

Well, someone gotta spend some money on performance moods?

Hopefully this car gonna be a "special" RS4
arotished

No need for Raceway Head/Main studs
No need for 80MM TB
No need for a girdle

You have spent a fortune on building this car ....

Don't be a fool.... as you might say not needed, but in mine and a fair few peoples eyes.... More needed than an engine rebuild.. Or new motor..

Dude it is up to him we cant ram want we think is right down his throat, there maybe plenty of cars that run without its all about choice.

I would you would but what do we know

Good luck with the build going to be epic car once done
loomx

Looks like an epic build, but as above I would fit headstuds and a girdle with that spec, if only for piece of mind.

and Quaiffe do torque sencing front and rear diffs for our cars
arotished

I had a talk with LOBA motorsport and they have been involved in several 2.7tt build with high performance numbers for almost 7 years now and they see no need for raceway head/main studs due they are to hard and will not behave naturally like the OEM tenstion bolts. Since I have a RS4 block, a gridle is not needed.
arotished

Soon gonna order 124 Mahle pistons and 3L rods from LOBA motorsport!

And I'm also gonna go for

LOBA Exhuast Manifold
LOBA Intake/99mm MAF Housing
LOBA Intercoolers (maybe)
