Noggy Avant B5. With failed turbo goodness!

Had my S4 for about a year now. Turbos started howling about 6 months ago and after a 2.5k quote from awesome i decided it was worth a crack myself. Like a goon i decided to do it outside in the december sun. Character building...

This cars done more miiles off a ford DI than its own steam under my ownership!

Rounded bumper shocker bolt stopped play on day one.

Tried following the audi educational video and remove the engine leaving the box in situ. Wasted a few hours trying to remove the engine speed sensor.

Progress. 2 ruined lambdas ( tried to pull the heatshields off the downpipes and ended up trapping the OS lambda)

As it sits for now while i get some parts.

a very manky oily v6.

Anybody know what the second sensor on the gearbox is there? goes to this grey plug :

Second bollocksed linkage in under 12 months

Anyone know what this plug is for? im presuming its something to do with the electric fan (just based on its location ) but im open to suggestions!

Checked the turbos with the downpipes off and unfortunately they both spin freely with no end play. Ive not removed them yet so hopefully the turbine is smashed to pieces. However there was a bit of oil in the Offside intercooler and associated pipework. The cars on 160 K anyway so i figured i might as well change them regardless.
Other stuff to do :
Outer CV boots
Lambda sensorx1
Cam cover gaskets
Gear linkage bushing (any UK sellers of uprated ones?)
Replace snapped coolant reservoir T piece (if someone has the part number to hand id be eternally grateful)
replace the little plastic elbow with the satellite dish looking thing on it that i managed to melt with a worklight
then get the b*stard on the road again and start looking to sort out the cosmetic issues. namely being get both bumpers resprayed/ repaired and either get B6 avus fitted or refurb the stock wheels.  Been a long time coming!  Oh and also is there any decent websites/shops in the northwest for buying bits?

Its a bit flat, had it buffed before the turbo started shitting itself.  Part of the conditions of me owning an s4 was it had to be nogaro, or imola. imolas a bit too loud for me though i think.

Put the Martell down dude!

Love the middle finger pic. It's a full on "f*ck you you're not going to beat me and if you do I'll set fire to your bonnet" engine pull. I would not even entertain the idea! Full respect to you my good man.

Im a qualified heavy vehicle mech, i figured itd hurt less doing it on my dads driveway than letting awesome relieve me of 2.5k! Getting it outs the easy one, its how it goes back in thatll be awkward.

grey plug on the gearbox is for the crank position sensor.

second sensor you've shown is the ambient temp sensor, the factory did a recall on the rs4,s and moved them from In front of the oil cooler to the intercooler shroud poking into the cool side.

was just thinking the same looks a straight car!

Bodyworks not too bad! two owner car prior to me. From new it was a company car and then it tootled round london for 12 years or so. Been a few big bills on it so far but what can you expect on an S car.

Got back to the turbo replacement after a massive delay with parts and
such. Finally found the culprit of the howling.

Few blades f*cked on driver side, im gonna attribute it to oil starvation  as levels were a bit on the low side. Replaced afew other bits like the linkage bushing and Lambdas.

I then started on the CV boots, but like a mong i obliterated the bearing cage on the O/S outer in my eagerness to get it done quickly.  So i decided to get started on servicing it. Only to find the spark plugs are oil saturated. which presumably would contribute to the intermittent misfire.

Ordered both rocker gaskets im hoping to get away without having to replace the coils (at least not just yet anyway!).

Figured i might as well get the engine and box back in while it was dry.

Should hopefully be ready to run by the end of wednesday, gone far too long without this car on the road for my liking.

not a nice work to done but you had to do what is had to do.

Good work man espcialy with the weather ive got to whip mine out at some point joy. Where in manchester are you im in worsley cheers. Nic

Yea, weathers been fairly shite again this week. car now runs just has a few coolant leaks and a suspiciously high oil temp. Just need to sort the leaks get the wheels, exhaust and front bumper back on and then get the shifter realligned properly. hopefully get it done for the arse end of the month if my 944 sells.
Im all over manchester mate, if you see me about dont be shy!
Adjei

Had it back on road for the past month.  So far need new tyres, shifter reallignment ( Again!) and probably an ignition amp

Dubnuttah

Nice work mate!
Alps

Congratulations mate. How did it drive?
Adjei

Drove better than before, no real teething problems other than i think ive buggered my third linkage in less than 5000 miles. Might just be an allignment issue hopefully.
Noggymike

I had alignment issues on from 2nd to 3rd but an adjustment sorted it
Adjei

Turns out the bushes between the rails and the shifter had become dislodged. Awesome GTI sorted it out under warranty ( the exact reason i took it for the linkage in the first place ). Next on the list is tyres and sort out the intermittent misfire.  then bodywork.
