Owner of RS2+RS4

I have my B5 RS4 for years, the more I drive the more I love it, specially after I drive a modern new car with DSG stuffs... the stick drive and feel of the my B5 becomes far more superior and safe...  

In my mind, RS2 is the real legend of the fastest estate on earth and it set the bench mark of its class.  It was my high school dream of such a machine.  Right now in my place I found a nice example RS2 for sale (I think there is only few available in my place..) and I start to think maybe I should get it to "complete my dream" (well despite the fact that my wife will kill me if i got the RS2+4 +daily car for family...)

does any of u who own both RS2+4? how is the maintainance of the 2 comapre to the 4? how about th reliability? does any 2 owner use this as their daily car? to me the engine of the 2 should be easier to maintain compare to the 4 due to the size of it.

As firstly a car (Audi) enthusiast and secondly a specialist dealer, I have been lucky enough to own and drive both, plus RS6, R8 etc..

I owned my B5 RS4 for 5 years, and I loved it,tuned it and cared for it like no other car I have ever owned.  I still miss it today.

However, I recently bought an RS2 (lightly tuned by MRC) and was simply blown away.  If you can live with the slightly older look and feel, the car is frankly amazing, the build quality is second to none and the kick from the old skool turbo wonderful.

I was very sad when it went and would love a low mileage example to keep for weekends and special occasions.  They are also likely to hold their value and possible increase in value in the future, saying that I believe the B5 RS4 (and RS6 'PLUS') will do the same.

Out of all of the Audis I have driven the list of the best would go like this.

RS2
R8
B7 RS4
B5 RS4
RS6 'PLUS'
RS6
S4, V8
S4, V6

Still need to get a quattro in and blag a go in a v10 R8 and S2.

haven't owned an RS4 but i can say from what i read/discuss with other RS4 owners, that the later is more expensive to maintain. For example, if you were to have both fully engine rebuilt and all major stuff done to them, the usual service costs are less with the  RS2.

If you intent to buy an rs2, make sure that you have some room for extra £££ for a major rebuild as soon as you get it, so that you have less on your mind afterwards. These cars really need that because of their age, regardless of how good their previous owners have been to them. You can still find cheap spares and it is also cheaper on petrol than the RS4 for everyday use.

I've had both and if I had kept the RS4 it possibly would have seized by now due to lack of use (but the sterio is very good) because I prefer the drive in the 2 (personal thing).
Yes the RS4 is more expensive to run than the RS2 and the 4s do wear a bit at lower mileages, remember the RS2 is built like a tank but its also getting on a bit now so things do break.
So you pays yer money etc.

I can agree with trevithick on this. Certain parts are getting rare and difficult to find for the RS2. Dealers at least in Norwayare struggeling sometimes to get hold of them, and at a mental cost.

An RS2+4 was my dream garage... I traded an RS2 rep for a genuine article 2 years ago, I bought a slightly tired high miler at a bargain price and went for a full rebuild with a few tweaks. I find it's pretty easy to maintain. Most jobs can be done yourself with a bit of mechanical inclination, and parts do last years and years! Being an older car you get more age related issues, but theres loads of help on the s2forum to diagnose and fix issues. The factory big brake upgrade makes for expensive discs but in line with other RS models, otherwise costs are aren't bad. Plus you have cheap tax and classic insurance!

With a 3rd child due next month and 2 more toddlers, An RS4 wasn't going to fit the kids so I just bought an RS6. The RS2 is now my garaged occasional use vehicle sat on a trickle charger now. Once the oldest is in a booster it will become my choice car again! I'm loving the '6 and it's wonderful as a performance family cruiser, but the RS2 is the one I'll never get rid of.

biggest issue with the above picture is that leaving the cars on that gravel will kill them, the urq especially. I've seen a few people who have done it and the moisture just eats them from underneath. The cars need moving onto hard standing ideally.

hiya, i was actually going to post to say I've got a new edition to the family.

A few months ago I got a RS2 to join the B5 RS4.  Parts are tough to come by but using forums has been a huge help.  in NZ parts for anything are $$ and getting them from overseas has saved me a heap.

will post up on the new car shortly

nb:  now both cars are getting on its going to be $$ to keep them going but I'm happy (well more willing) to do so for the love of the game

Saw ur thread in vask nz forum, u r really one of the  lucky guy in the world who own 2+4!  i have actually contacted one of the nz owner who want to sell his mint rs2 but due to the  big price difference i think ill go for UK ones instead.  shall grab one from UK shortly and hopefully get it by June!  ill get some 2+4 pics too when i do get both ready.

Agreed its really worth to spend to keep these amazing machines.

Ps: I used to stay in Auckland long time ago, its truly a beautiful place on earth to live with.

Just to follow up the thread, after waiting for months, as a very happy RS nut, my B5 imola finally meet up her cousin - the true RS



My B5 has been modified quite extensively so I cant really compare it with this bone stock RS2, however I do feel the build quality is much more "german" way to my RS2 compare to my RS4.  

Most likely I would keep the RS2 as stock as possible, ie. no remap, standard turbo etc...

Problem is parts are now becoming NLA for the RS2 such as MAF and water pump plus they have a lot of niggly issues.
Personally for me the RS4 is twice the driving experience of an RS2 but lacks the grunts of the I5 engine in standard form.
