RS engine for an UR quattro

Hi all, just looking for some advice as to which would be the best S or RS engine to use as donor for a 20V engine for an UR quattro. It's current MB lump just is too slow and tired to keep, and they are not worth the bother of getting refurbed.
Any advice welcome.....especially if you have done the conversion yourself

Ohh dear what a shame I own 3 mb quattros  .......................maybe  you should spend some money on her
quattrokid

what!! If you must at least use the RSTT engine then, at least it's a 5 pot 20v turbo   but I agree with Amanda , sort out your engine
Parptoot

I also owned an MB engined ur quattro and I would agree with amanda and quattrokid.
Please reconsider and save this valuable piece of history from the modders pile.

Of course as this is your own car you can do what you want but just think a little more about it.

If there is something wrong with the MB have you considered getting it sorted properly?

I think hes talking about S and RS engine as in the S2 or RS2, at least i hope so

Fitting a B5 engine would spoil the car but it would also be a very nice project
melloncollie

The MB engine was actually in great condition, only 34k on the clock and was dynoed by the previous owner at 202bhp, but it's a heavy car for that kind of power, and to be blunt, it was pretty slow. Especially on the twisty stuff where the turbo lag really affects it. I'd rather have a 200bhp normally aspirated diesel than that MB lump, it'd be a lot more torquey and responsive.
We pulled it out and skipped it last week. Now we need to find a proper engine as a replacement.
I note that the S2 / RS2 engines are sometimes fitted, what about S4 / S6 engines?
pjbRs

Surely you can tune the 5 pot to what ever power you need? plus there will be loads of info and tuners who can point you in the right direction.

Putting an S4 or S6 engine in will add too much weight and be more expensive to tune.
quattrokid

you mean th UrS4/6 which is the AAN 5 pot 20v engine.Standard its 230 bhp and can take a dam sight more.....

the car is at least 20 years old and their character reflects that, you'll probably get stuffed by a new Mini BUT thats not the point of the Ur quattro now ...its an ICON so enjoy it for what it is, if you want a modern pocket rocket then get one but please dont canabalize a car 20 years old car which has a very special place in history, changing engines will make it not wanted in the future as it wont be a classic... therefore worthless.

Do what you want melloncollie, it's not for anyone else to tell you what to do.

Hopefully someone will be able to answer your questions too

I already have, if people had read all of my earlier post, they'd have seen that we've already skipped the engine.

Yes maybe David!!!!!!!! .............................but do you realise how very rare these cars are, there are probably less than 150 mb engined quattros left as they were only made for 18 mths in a limited run before the 20v rr came in. To have found a low milage one and then want basterdise her is criminal ..........keep her standard or sell her and buy something else plenty of genuine urq enthuisasts would be delighted to have 202bhp as standard my self included.

can you get the engine back!!!
melloncollie

Too late now, the engine is in the skip, the hunt for a new engine begins. I've driven a few 20V quattro's, they really are much better than the MB engine.

What a total shame to do this to an iconic car     ....................................but you also  missed out making your self a bit of cash by skipping it ohh well good luck sourcing an engine...............I guess you think you know what you are doing so have fun!!!
melloncollie

Actually we might be removing more than the engine, it looks like an early 2 door Audi 80 has come our way, so we might remove 12 inches of the bodywork too
Jamo

Skipped the engine? you could have sold it and financed the project.

The purists will always be horrified but I always applaud anyone who are prepared to do something different with their own car

good luck with whatever engine you choose
s4marsh

Anyone smell something?
melloncollie

Well thank you, thats very nice. I ask for some advice, and thats the response that I get?
mikey-s

Go for it Melloncollie, the world would be a boring place without people trying something different.  I also like the idea of a short wheel base conversion especially if you have access to a donor 2 door Audi 80 to do the job properly!   That's something I've wanted to do for a long time... and hopefully one day I'll do it.
frazered

people are surprised you skipped a good low mileage rare as engine that would have been sold for good money mainly.

a ready to go RS4 will cost circa 5k second hand.

Stick some pics up

When he mentioned "RS" I assume he was referring to RS2......

Eitherway, good luck with the project.
melloncollie

Right. I'm in a good mood today as I managed to source an AAN engine. Plus we managed to retrieve the old MB engine out of the skip. First 200 gets it.
quattrokid

advertise it on www.quattroforum.com

someone was looking for a metering head recently

Nice one, what you planning on doing to engine? keeping it stock
RS4Jules

Sounds a good project
Keep us posted, with updates, good thing you managed to get the engine back.
Must be worth a mint after what all these people have posted, surely for 200 notes, one of them would want it
Aragorn

Needs a modern twist imo.

Proper modern management with COP ignition, and a modern turbocharger (EFR series perhaps?) will really breathe some life into an old AAN.
melloncollie

Due to an overwhelming lack of interest in the MB engine, it's gone back in the skip, and gone off for recycling

Exactly what i did
Acidburn

any updates on this, I went with the following in mine:

aan lump
aby wiring loom
full s2 running gear
dsy box
kw coilovers
hybrid rs2 turbo
rs2 exhaust manifold
rs2 cams
ported/polished head
uprated rods
plus a few other bits.
megsy

Best thing you could have done with that MB lump .Totally agree they are crap. Threw my MB engine away along time ago and put a 20v rr in . Never looked back. 20v stripped now and has new rods, bigger valves and a garret. Motec ecu on its way soon and then put it all back together. I wouldn't give a toss if it had no miles on it they all should be 20v .

I'm sure I read some where that the 10v was fitted to milk floats and my bmx could beat a milk float .
butch

yes i agree to, best place for a 10v is a skip. mine would of had the same fate only some mug gave me 400 for it, as they say "theres a seat for every arse" needless to say after 1 day he gave it to the scrap man himself so he could buy some bakkie for his rollies. i mean who wants to shout in a gastapo party (in adolfs accent) "oh ive got za car zat vont pull za skin off za rice pudding, but it vent very vell 30 years ago"??? you get your 20v in son, the engine that they all should of been fitted with. audi realised this when benny hill took over from yogi & booboo bear. thats why the best quattro is the sport and RR. anything else is like the tramps quattro
