RS4 (B5) vs RS6 (C5) - thoughts

Hi all

Looking at either of the above cars as a next car, looking for something quicker than my S4 but also that can cope with 2 kids and all the stuff that comes with that including tandem pushchairs.

I dont do that many miles (around 5k a year) but dont want to be spending thousands on maintenance so will be looking at either models having all the main issues already addressed. This will narrow choice as have a budget of around 10k.

I have tried to look at it logically and created a Pro's and con's list below but I am also after any advice or opinions from those who may have been in similar boat or driven/owned both.

Have posted this on both respective forums to gauge opinions of each owners - hope thats ok

RS4
Pro's
Performance
Prestige
Agressive looks
Availability of parts
Modding potential

Cons
Age
Cams
High milers for budget
Lack of rear space in comparison with RS6

RS6
Pro's
Performance
Agressive looks
Still looks modern
V8

Cons
Automatic - never owned one before
DRC
Gearbox reliability
High milers for budget
adowds

C5 is more lowly tuned, so the motor is less stressed, meaning higher miles shouldn't be a worry engine wise. Gearbox is an achilles heel though. DRC is a worry but most have been replaced now, which you can do from under a grand.

I've only had the 6, so am not fully qualified to speak, I will say I love mine, despite the enormous amounts of cash it soaks up... Perfect for having two kids as well, prams etc go in the back. They love it when you go fast too, haha! It is legendary wheels, folk come up to you and talk about it. Finally, V8, V8, V8.
Noggymike

Had C5 for 5 years, young family, prams etc. Did the job and some. Now on B5, no need for extra space etc, now grown up a little. Both have pros and cons obviously, its just getting used to them!. C5, awesome looks, sound, performance and running costs!, B5 awesome looks, performance and low running costs! Take your pick, loved them both but if I had to chose would probably stick with the B5, makes my heart race more!

I find it interesting you list the RS6 as aggressive looking, I'd of put that for the RS4 personally.
One of the things that puts me off the RS6 is that it doesn't look that different to an A6 at a glance.
The RS4 will always win on looks IMO due to its unique arches
dest

Plus, I'd rather buy a 10k RS4 than a 10k RS6
Shoppinit

I couldn't disagree more. When I was followed by my own RS6 I can confirm that it is a very passive aggressive look indeed in the rear view.
Shoppinit

I love the RS4.

There isn't a wrong choice here.
dest

Don't get me wrong, they do look aggressive to some degree, but when compared to an RS4 it's not as much
adowds

Compared with the V10, the C5 looks like something out of Mad Max. Especially with the correct degree of lowering.

If you mistake it for a stock A6 I reckon you need a new prescription windscreen...
Shoppinit

Not really fair to compare things to the C6. Anything looks good in comparison.

It's like comparing every girl you meet to Jocelyn Wildenstein:

Noggymike

As said earlier had C5 for 5 yrs but it was only when I p/ex her against new B5 that I noticed big differences, I have photos will post when get off my fat ar#e! Agree with Dest B5 much more agressive especially from the front the arches are the DOGS BO##OCKS
Adrian E

If your kids are out of the rear facing stage then a B5 is an option, but they are much tighter for rear leg room than a C5.

Boot in the C5 is a slightly odd shape so I'd double check you can get your pushchair in there - we had to change our plans on what we bought as the C5 came before sprog!

In terms of running costs, both will empty your wallet if you're not doing much yourself.  This coming from someone who bought an S8 to carry sprog about lol

Do you defo want turbo shove?  Only reason for asking is you can pick up a V8 A6 in either C5 or C6 shape with below average miles for your budget, or spend less and keep some back for repairs/mods?
jamesca80

Thanks all - very useful, keep them coming!

I think both are aggressive, put it both as Pros i do like the look of both. Arches on the RS4, rear end on RS6 with quad exhausts. Either would be an amazing car.

Couple of interesting comments that has got me thinking - 1) I'd rather buy a 10k RS4 than a 10k RS6

On ones i have looked at for 10k you seem to get more for the RS6 than you do with RS4. Maybe that is just for sale prices and not sold but that was my impression.

and 2) you can pick up a V8 A6 in either C5 or C6 shape with below average miles for your budget, or spend less and keep some back for repairs/mods?

No not essential for turbo shove, just want something quick. Did see one C6 V8 for sale but thats all i have seen! Would be interested but they havent been on my radar so far.

One of the biggest pulls of the 6 is the V8. Love it in my S4 and would miss it, 4 is special so probably make up for it but the 6 gets me into RS ownership and keeps the V8 - adding two turbos too! But the RS4 is such a damn good car....still undecided.
Moonwalker

Get a twin turbo, you will regret it if you don't. I feel like my plus is shooting me out a feckin' slingshot when the two turbos come on boost and launch it down the road, so so so addictive. I haven't voted in the poll, as I don't have a preference, they're both great cars.
monkeyrs6

If 10k is all you have to spend, then unless you are very lucky you are going to be spending money.. The rs6 is more fore your money and will come with bigger bills..Buy the best you can afford as it will save money in the long run.. Tim

I have 4 kids and have had both the c5 a6 and now have the c5 rs6 so technically had both for almost 13 yrs in one form or another with baby parafinallia etc   I would not swop my rs6 for any other car as I love the v8 noise Both cars have their + &- but for me it's the rs6 hands down

Thanks for belittling my 10k

Not sure I actually agree, seen examples of both for around 10k with main issues sorted, FSH and sub or around 100k miles. Thats asking price as well, it's a buyers market.

Not going into this blindly thinking ill buy car and spend nothing on it but also not going to pay over the odds for something. Being patient and a bit of research goes a long way.
Noggymike

C5 gr8 straight line + lazy driving. B5 Work the gears but more rewarding. 4 me B5 a drivers car. The choice is yours.
dest

Have you driven both?
Noggymike

Good point. Do your research, research, research, research and when you finished, have a drive!

Basic AT search pulled up these options:

Lowish miles late C5 V8 with nice spec and 7 seat option - overpriced though, I think http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201240486835740

C6 with all the toys you'll ever need and sensible miles http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201243489616419
BillTheButcher

I used to own a B5 RS4 and I'm currently looking at C5 RS6s.

I got rid of my RS4 because I felt the power delivery was far too peaky: very little happened before about 3.5k and then it would all come on at once. Mine was modded so it's possible that a standard one would have different power delivery but I also prefer the feel of a V8 to a V6.

So for me, C5 RS6 is the one to go for.
mavada

here you can compare them in the same colour...

jamesca80

Thanks Mavada that's really useful

Not sure why but im surprised how similar they look in the photos!
Noggymike

I am currently uploading some pics (yawn) of the day when p/ex C5 for B5. Contrast in colours adds to the mix. Will get sorted asap
bigben143

if audi put the rear of the rs6 and the front of the rs4 together.. what a awsome looking car that would be
Challice

I like both but i would go RS4 as i really don't like the front of the RS6 everything else is great but the front end just ruin's it for me and the fact it's auto.
Noggymike

Agreed
The Chippy

I think Dest 's quote about the 10k is that RS4's seem to have bottomed out price-wise. Two years ago you could have paid £20k for a decent one which now you could pick up for £12k.
They are now in the realms of limbo when they start disappearing quickly and the prices go nuts.

Not sure but even if he didn't mean that, this is my view!!

I have a 4 and a 6  (unfortunately not of the RS variety!)

the killer for me as a daily with kids/family/lots of mates is the rear leg room in the 4...or lack thereof

I do love the V8 growl as well!

i'm considering doing the same (but with RS's) for the space issues.

have a b5 rs4 now and always looking for a decent c5 rs6 wagon.  my only issues are the maintenance costs for 2 old rs cars...

oh ,and the wife doesn't have her full license yet so we only have 1 driver
