RS6 Engine on S8

does the RS6 c5 V8 4.2 biturbo engine fit on S8 ..

and if it`s .. then how much the cost of the engine .. ??

I seem to remember 2 maybe 3 years ago someone done a conversion on an s8 and because of the heat the rs6 engine produces it started to melt the s8
hunterx

how it`s come . the size of the engine are similar .. also the both cars made from same material. maybe he did not make it ok .
quattrokid

The RS 6 C5 is a steel bodied car whereas the A8/S8 is an aluminium shell.
DavidT

What a great car that would make though
hunterx

what`s about s6 is it also steel or aluminum ??
CraigG

S6 is steel aswell, the A/S8 is unique in that respect.

Oh hell YES. I cannot even begin to tell you how much better the D2 S8 is then the C5, the engine is the only reason I'm sticking around with the C5. A bog standard A6 would have been what 22k and a D2 A8 50k? It feels like they have cheapened the C5 on purpose because of this.

I would consider a single turbocharged 4,2 V8 in a D2. It would locate the snail away from the chassis rail, so heat will be less of an issue.
Professor Peach

I've thought about this a few times (not that I have even a tenth of the money I would need), but it does sound amazing.

Nollywood - but wouldn't that sought of conversion, adding a turbo to a currently naturally asparated car cost a fortune. Better to find an RS6 engine from a dead car and try to sort out the heat issues?

Then again as said before. I am an idiot!
audimad100

bang on the money proffessor peach most cost effective way would be a donor engine and box including the wiring loom etc.
the exhaust mainfolds, turbos and downpipes are going to be the biggest source of the heat problems. i would say that a serious amount of shrouding along the chassis legs and bulkhead will be required also if the DP's are wrapped this will also help.
another issue that will probably rear its ugly head will be cooling as i would have thought that the S8 rad will need replacing with either the RS one or a perpose build rad.

would still be a real weapon on the road and would give a few people a shock as it took of like a scoulded cat
andream88

just source a W12 A8...and be done with it

No one said it would be cheap (or easy). Conversions seldom are, and in most cases we spend more on our cars are worth. It's a C-O-N-V-E-R-S-I-O-N, not a plug and play solution. If you prefer the easy way, then by all means, buy an RS6. Or if you want a more powerful D2, then a LHD W12 is an option.

Indeed neither solution would be cheap or easy, but they are both conversions in their own right. It just seemed to me that there was already a power plant from another model that was almost perfect for the job, then it would be a sensible starting point. Of course when did 'sensible' ever get used with a discussion about twin turbo v8 beasts.
Thanks for the clarification on the spelling of C-O-N-V-E-R-S-I-O-N though. Very helpfull .

I have Audi S8 -1997 6spd with Audi RS6 C5 engine, I have used my car in 2 years now and is updating it all the time.
It is a lot of work to fit the RS6 engine and intercoolers and make everything to work.
But as you see it is possible!

Love it!

Any pics of the conversion work?
Akis

Phenomenal achievement! Very well done indeed

Further details on the conversion and any issues you had to overcome would be greatly appreciated.

Top work

Hubba hubba! Very impressive and now (unlike when this thread started), I have a D2 S8 as a starting point. 😎

RS6 lump in a S8... Thanks,  I did NOT need to see this!

Great work!
RS8

I had a manual gearbox from the beginning in my S8.

Here is some work that have been done in my car.

The block must be grinded and welded to fit the S8 starter to manual transmission and make the adapter to the starter motor or buy rebuilding kit available to the RS6 for manual gearbox transplation.

Weld engine mounts on the front engine frame because they are not in the same place on the RS6 engine. and cut out and modify the frame to accommodate pressure pipes to the IC.
And NO, the rs6 engine frame will not fit on a D2 chassie so you can't use that one.

Making room for IC's on the sides = fit a smaller coils container on that side and on the other side move the ABS unit and bend all brake lines to make them fit again on the ABS unit and also remove ac filter dryer and AC pipes etc. to make room for IC

The rs6 and S8 electrical system must be paired = mass job, then a tuning company have to remove all Canbus functions as well as automatic transmission and lots of other fault codes in the RS6 ecu you will have when you start the engine first time.

Modify the pedals and mount RS6 gas pedal because it is electrically controlled to the throttle and not with wire as the S8.

Move the flywheel sensor or modify so it reads right against S8 flywheel and buy Sachs Race pressure plate and clutch disc so they can handle the torque of the RS6 engine.

Modify the fuel system, your A8/S8 fuelpump can handle about 400hp not more, but it will work to fill a catch tank were you have a Bosch 044 or Walbro 450 fuel pump installed, because it will not work to fit better fuel pump directly in your fuel tank.

Move forward the water cooler 2cm to make room for the engine and rebuild the fan cover to fit the RS6 electric fans. (RS6 has 2 electric fans S8 has 1 electric + 1 that spins with multi strap) RS6 has completely different fan control with "ecu" that controls the fan speed instead of a resistor bridge as the S8 have.

Modify RS6 water pipe at the rear on the engine for the pipe to the heater and modify the RS6 water pipe on the side of the engine to the S8 radiator.
even the bottom cooling pipe from RS6 must be cut and welded to fit the S8 radiator.

Install an big oil cooler in the front and fix hoses to it.

Making new servo hoses and new servo jar (A4/RS6 is much smaller) or move the S8 jar.

Modify or build new RS6 downpipes and new exhaust I have 2x3inch first that it is 1 x 3.5" from middle of the car to the rear.

Modify RS6 airbox on the engine so it fits in the S8 engine compartment and then you have to move a bit even on the S8 conservator.
Then you have reinforcements on the inside of the hood that needs to cut away, otherwise you can not close the hood with RS6 airbox on the engine.

S8 cruise control will not work on the RS6 engine, trip computer will not work and it is hard to fit everything with AC parts still there, so the easiest is to run without aircondition.

Is probably something I forgot ..
Akis

Awesome! Thank you for the information

You will find some of them on ebay, just search for:
RS6 engine BCY
boost addict

That's a really neat conversion, big car, alloy body, one of the best audi engines mated with a gearbox that can take the pounding Not the chocolate ZF auto ticking bomb as in the rs6.... Well done, it's my dream car too !

I need help finding stylish ventilation grille to the bonnet.

Or does anyone know if there is a fiberglass bonnet to D2 on the market?

I've put the tape on them places where it is not possible to cut holes.
(There is also an reinforcement in the middle of the hood front to back, that I forgot to put tape over on the image.)

Here are the best places to mount grilles on:
But I want it to look neat and original!
I do not want it to look like a teenager has built my car.

Good fun there Martin
RS8

Unfortunately, I got a fire under my car this year, so now is the car to be rebuilt = easier and faster than ever.
You can view pictures and movies about the fire on the following pages here:

.

Or read the complete thread about my car.
but only a little text on first page is in English the rest is in Swedish, but you have a lot of pictures to look at..

Sad times man But as you say a good opportunity to rebuild it stronger than ever!

Were you able to determine the cause of the fire?
RS8

Yes, a round rubber lid behind passenger top fell off?
