RS6 gearbox problem

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum. My first post actaully.Recently bought a RS6 with a problem with the transmission. Actually it works when the car is cold, once it warms up it cannot change gears and after a big knock it goes in emergency mode. Anyone had that problem? Is it the TC or the gearbox? I'm suspecting the TC. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

TC? Transmission Controller? Cooler?

Sounds like a big problem tho. Any codes, especially from the solenoids?

TCU I guess is what is meant....
It "might" just be the F125 switch but thumps are usually internal and will probably require a rebuild.

Torque Converter. There are 2 codes that show up. Will try to recolect by memory.

First one: 17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio

Second one is about the Torque Convertor It had On/Off at the end.

Second one come very rarely.

When cold car runs and pulls great.

So it might be worth a gearbox fluid and filter change first, but be prepared for that to literally be money down the drain.

How many miles has it done? Any records of gearbox fluid change? What area are you in and do you know of any ZF specialists near?

yes, drain and examine the fluids. If it is dirty, replace the filter and refill and cross your fingers.
That might cure a sticky valve-body/solenoid.
Otherwise there may be a problem with one or more of the dozens of orings in the box.
I just got a refurb kit (1058-298-023) for about 250 quid.

It is typical for these boxes to behave differently when warmed-up, due to the very tight tolerances in the valve body.
As the VB warms up, the channels and cylinders expand too, possibly causing a pressure loss and this clunky behaviour.

I just had a VB reconditioned for about 500 quid.
Can be replaced with the box still in the car.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply guys!

Will examine the engine faults as the MAFs seem to be shot. One shows 20 g/ms the other 360 g/ms on idle.

I'm still hasitating what to do. If i have to rebuild it will convert it to manual. That will cost about the price for minor repair of the auto trans.

MAF faults can cause serious confusion in the TCU, so get those fixed first.
Shouldn't thump/bang though.....
jockthedog

hesitate as long as you can!

You suggestion is to stop hasitating and to go with the manual. I'm from Bulgaria. There are already 2 converted RS6 to manual here without a spacer.

I would be interested to hear how much a manual conversion is tho.
