S4 Saloon Widebody 700+bhp build AND S4 Avant Widebody build

Hi Guys, well i have been a it quiet recently on here, but thats gonna change as i have a little project starting up at Unit 20 soon and thought i would share it with all of you. Sorry it's going to be along thread as i ramble quite a bit!

First i just want to say thanks to everyone on here for all your help in the past and of course for all the banter, its this mix that makes this forum so good!

Also thankyou to all the people on here who have chronicled their big turbo builds as i have gained a lot of knowledge from following your threads. good job lads! You have been an inspiration!

Right, Grizz and Lee are the wizards that will be doing most of the work, but as this is justt starting i am sure many others will be involved shortly.

As some of you know i have already had my S4 saloon widebodied and upgraded to 436bhp (last RR) with some K04's last year.

Link for previous build.

http://audisrs.com/about3404.html

A reminder pic here...

Well....onto the PLAN!

If you remember, grizz had for sale an imola Yellow Avant S4 that had already undergone the widebody treatment with OEM RS4 panels BUT it had no engine so required some work to get it running etc. It has pretty much been in storage for about 2 years. Well i bought it as it provided a good opportunity (read : excuse) to upgrade my current saloon. I have already done the widebody treatment so understood what work had already been done to the avant. I wouldn't have normally been in the market for another car, but as this had already been widebodied i thought it would be an ideal project car to sort out. Then i had a bigger idea....

I have all the bits needed to get this avant running installed in the saloon so i will be (well....Grizz and Lee at Unit 20 will be) transferring my engine to this car.

So that leaves my saloon widebody a non runner. Well the plan is to

a) Get engine
b) Get some turbos
c) Go BIG with power

Soooooo this thread will be in two parts really. the first part will mainly be updating on the avant build and then once thats up and running i will sort out the saloon.

Avant Setup Plan:

When i first saw it, the car was mainly in bits, but all the panels were there, mostly painted in imola, minus a bonnet. the interior had s4 recaros black leather and also an rs4 steering wheel, rs4 gearknob and handbrake etc.

As imola is a marmite colour and stands out a tad too much for my liking (it would be mecca for thieving scumbags and vandals etc in Liverpool!) i decided to get it fully reprayed in rs4 Black by Paint Express next door to Grizz who did the previous paint job on my saloon.

So i will be transplanting virtually everything from my saloon into it:

S4 engine with gearbox
Ko4 turbos
Big injectors ,airbox mod etc.
RS4 clutch and lightweight flywheel
APR bipipe
RS4 intercoolers
RS4 oil cooler
Full milltek RS4 exhaust
PSS9 Suspension
OZ Superleggera 3 19" wheels

Currently it runs at 436 bhp but i am sure it will need remapping once its in the avant so i am hoping to get viperbl to map it (Rich you have PM   ).

the idea is to get both cars on the ramp to get it swapped over quite quickly so i can run the avant while my saloon is getting sorted.

Here are the pics of the Avant currently:

Colour of some of the parts originally

Car painted black so far

Yes i know its VERY dirty as its been in storage for ages but it will hopefully be a lot cleaner once all the panels have been done and put on the car.

Hopefully the rest of the doors ,boot, and bumpers will be done next week and then it should mainly be ready for all the relevant bits to be transplanted in to it.

The wing mirrors will be black, and i will be getting a slight tint done to the windows so it will be a very stealthy black machine i hope! it will also have my black wheels with polished lip on it so hopefully it will match well.

I was in two mionds on whether to get the roof rails put back on, but as it might actually be used as a luggage loader then they would be useful so they are staying.

I will also be transferring my Hi-tech RS4 recaros into it as well.

The idea is that it will be a comfortable daily driver, yet have a bit of ooooomph to it when  i want it to go. The big power will be in the saloon.

S4 widebody saloon PLAN:

Right...... i am hoping to go for around 700+bhp on this one and to get this the plan so far is to go for some Tial 770's. Tial are getting a good rep over in the states and seem to be gaining it over here now as well. I was toying with the idea to go for RS6 turbos, but these have come out which i have taken a fancy to. To help with the lower spool time and torque i will be going along the 3L route.

So far, grizz has hopefully located an RS4 donor engine (i think it has done around 70,000 miles?) which we will mainly only be using the bottom end and rs4 inlet manifold, oh and all the gubbins that comes with the engine, and the gearbox. the rest of the engine thats not used we will sell on hopefully.

List of mods planned:

RS4 engine 3.0L conversion with strengthened rods etc
2.4 heads ported and polished
Lower compression, phenolic spacers
Tial 770 Turbos
RS4 gearbox
Uprated clutch
Uprated Exhaust manifold
3" downpipes with twin RS4 pipes one box exhaust
Wagner Sidemount intercoolers
Remap

Undecided:

Meth kit?
Brakes - prob B7 RS4 or other?
Suspension - prob PSS9's
Wheels
Upgrade Front seats?
Extra fuel pump/ upgrade fuel lines etc?

Car has already got Hotchkiss ARBs and a bosch 044 fuel pump.

I am sure i have forgotten something in that list as its quite basic, but you get the idea.

Hoping to get over 700bhp once its all done.

This is all in the planning stages so far so any advice on it all is greatly appreciated! This will all be taking quite some time so i will hopefully be able update as much as i can. This is VERY much a project in progress so sorry if it takes a long time to get right.

I plan the avant to be a daily comfortable runner, with the saloon 700 mainly weekend fast road / track car. i will not be stripping it down to be a true lightweight track car like grizz has done with his RS4, as it will also be used as a 'normal' car. Also there is no point as i put in a sunroof last time!

Hopefully i will be able to get some more avant pics up next week. Grizz has some pics of the original conversion somewhere which i will put up if anyones interested?

Well thanks for reading all that! Hope its an interesting read for you all, and hope to have some good ideas for anything i have missed, and also some advice!

Cheers guys, and thanks again to everyone for all your help etc!

Your going to need springs and retainers valves, why are you buying lower compression gaskets when you can order your 3.0l to have lower compression pistons? Girdle if what Jack says these turbos  produce you will need one then you need someone to build it not easy alot of time and issues

But great news will be watching this project

Can't wait to see them develop.

hi musty, yeah it just copied and pasted that list from when i was planning it all awhile ago! mostly likely it will all be sorted with the 3.0 bits and pieces

Yeah i will be getting a girdle sorted from grizz, i knew i forgot something!

cheers musty!

also cheers for the kudos Alps and Matt_D!

I'd be happy doing one of these, but 2...?

You could sell either and be happy...
What a lovely position to be in when you leave your house in the morning..

Hmmm Shall I take the 440bhp (effectively) RS4 Avant, or shall I take the 700bhp (effectively) RS4 Saloon...?

How much of a hurry am I in ?!

Awesome.

am i the only one wondering why you didnt just buy a black RS4 in the first place? surely a tuned RS4 will be less money than

sallon
widebodied
widebodyavant
sprayed avant
engine swapped avant

total = massive dolla?

or have i totally missed the point?

erm.....i think you have missed the point.

not that i have to explain why i am doing any of this but....

managed to get the avant cheap as it was in a bit of a state with no engine. i have an awesome engine....get it swapped at very good rates by grizz and lee....i have a unique avant that is considerably cheaper than an well looked after and good RS4. i know the engine and parts put on it so i am more comfortable with the car rather than buying an RS4. Also a black Rs4 to my spec is quite rare in itself and i am one fussy bugger to please when it comes to car spec....grizz and lee will attest to that!!!!  if i wanted to go 700+bhp on my current engine half the stuff would be changed on it so might as well keep the engine and use it in a cheap avant that was available at the right time. i didn't want an RS4 avant 18 months ago when i was thinking about a widebodied saloon project. now i can use my saloon as a very fast road/track car and also have a fun car to go to work in and haul lots of crap about in the big boot.

and anyway....modding a car is a lot of fun as well as heartache! wheres the fun in buying an already tuned RS4 anyway?

As everyone on here probably knows as soon as you modify a car you will lose money on what you put into it if you are going to sell the car. with these cars i don't think i will ever sell them as they are very personal and unique to me as they are probably a lot rarer than any RS4. not saying that they are an equivalent to an RS4 as they are both technically S4's but i like things to be a bit different, but that is just my take on things.

Why do people modify cars and do different projects on them anyway? to be a bit different and to get the cars to what they personally want them to be surely? i am not saying that my project cars are anyway near as ambitious or as groundbreaking as others on here as all the things being done to my cars have been done before and its pretty much tried and tested but they are unique to me.

after all of this i will hopefully have 2 cars that will give me great pleasure day in day out for a long long time which is surely what modifying cars is all about?

grizz sure knows me then....

yeah aposegil, i will let you know this week sometime about the clutch mate. lots of deciding to do at the moment on whats actually going to be done on the car.

still open to suggestions on best way to do this really but i have a fair idea where i want to go with it to be honest.

Ash
Ash25

Just wanted to say that viperbl has agreed to sort out the map on both of these cars once they are ready....i can't wait! Cheers Rich

Also want to say that while Grizz and Lee at Unit 20 are mainly doing the work, Jack from Satan's-Child Racing will be the man building the block and supplying the bits for the big build. After seeing what he can do with his own drag strip racer MONSTER car i think my engine build will be a piece of cake for him and will be in very good hands (once he gets the engine that is!). So thanks Jack for agreeing to do the build for me!

Hopefully the avant shell will be done this week and some more pics of the completed paintwork should be up by the end of the week.

Then we are waiting for the new/old engine to be sorted and once thats in hand then we can do the transfer of the 440 engine into the avant.

Cheers for the interest in this thread guys....hope it will get more interesting as the build progresses!

Cheers stigter. i do love the B5.

yeah the c6 rs6 would be a beast at 700bhp but a little bit expensive at the moment.

once they come down to the price of what a c5 rs6 is at now then they will be just awesome cars for the money. but then again the c5 rs6 will be even cheaper!

A little update. most of the panels are painted and on the avant, apart from the bonnet. hopefully will try and get some pics soon.....

And you're not tempted to look into a VR6 conversion then Ash??

Loads of R32 engines on eBay from £850+ (some decent low milers for £1200).  You'd be saving that much money on only having to buy one turbo!
MarkB

Sure would be great to see a 3.2 or even a 3.6 in the saloon.

Just what I'd like to do but I don't have the budget for it

ha yeah that would be a good idea actually....don't tempt me! one turbo sounds good, but i have always liked the 2.7.

not really seen much on the vr6 conversions you are talking about....whats the deal with them anyway?

cheers guys.

Well i think i will stick to a 2.7 RS4 engine to start with.

Soooooo, i think grizz has managed to find an rs4 engine for me, which shoulfd hopefully be here in a couple of weeks? with that in mind i will obvioulsly be selling a few bits off it as i won't be needing a lot of it, so when its here and stripped i will know whats what.

Once the engine is here i am gonna drop off the widebody saloon to unit 20 for the engine swap as the avant bodywork has been mostly finished, painted and fitted now.

i have also sourced a set of rs4 clocks for it, so i think it will look virtually like an rs4 in the end! i hope it will look good. i will possibly be going over this weekend to have a look at it and take some more pics for you guys. i am hoping grizz will have the photos of when the avant was originally widebodied which i will put up as well.

does anybody know of any led rear lights for the avant available? i have the inpro ones for the saloon which i think look good, and i know the rs6 has them available, but haven't seen any for the s4/rs4 avant?

AND also, i don't want to start and open a massive can of worms here as i know its been discussed to death....intercoolers. i am tempted slightly with a FMIC but would most likely go for some wagner sidemounts but my question would be how much is taken out of front bumper for an FMIC to fit? does it lose strength and does it impede other rads etc?

also do you think it would look a bit odd with the pipes on show? i change my mind on how i think they look almost on a daily basis!

PS this is for the avant, as i will prob upgrade from my rs4 intercoolers, the saloon will be thought about later!

anyway, i will update with some more pics soon, and hopefully with a more detailed idea on whats going on with the 700+ build!

Cheers

Nice one Ash
So it was your black avant i spotted in the corner, when dropping Lisa's off for paint,i wondered who's it was,but never thought of you as you already had one
You obviously rate the paint shop then, good to hear it as it's the 1st time i've used them and Grizz speaks highly off them, which is good enough for me.
I do absolutely love black rs4's but if i was going for a colour change i would have gone for something completely original,i did actually get a price
for a colour change on mine, which i know is sacriledge, but i would love to do it.
I just wish my paintwork wasn't so good as it would make the decision much easier.
Anyway can't wait to see the results of your new project..Good work mate

cheers jules. yeah i was a bit torn when i did the saloon between silver or black, but as mine was already silver i went for the rs4 avus which was different in the fact its the only saloon widebody with avus silver. i had black as my second choice so it ended up that the avant went to black.

i was toying with the idea of doing something original with it but its going to be a daily driver mainly and i absolutely love the stealthy black look like lowrider's rs and a few others. i did think blue, or maybe a darker grey than the avus but black it is. i might have a few things up my 'idea sleeve' for the saloon, nothing like a full repaint, just a few little bits. as the saloon is going to be mainly a 'fun' car then a bit of originality wouldn't go amiss. i was maybe thinking of having a couple of subtle grey stripes or black ones to give it a bit of a race theme, but only if it looks good, not in a tacky way. may just have the roof blacked out or something. i like the way electricracer's imola s4 has a subtle two stripe effect on it. i could go mental and have side exhausts on it but i don't think so!

paint express have been brilliant so far and have done a great job on my saloon, and also the avant, i would recommend them to everyone. good chaps to deal with too...

reapainting your rs? probably sacrilege if you plan on selling later, but if you think its gonna be yours forever, why not? what sort of colour would you go for?

What a great project Ash, looking forward to some more pics. I saw the Yellow Beast covered in 2 inches of dust when i was up at unit20 for my health check, infact i helped push it into the painting area - have to agree it was a bit too yellow for my liking and as a stealth every day driver i think that Black is the perfect choice.

After spending 8 months gathering together all the parts to do an RS4 avant conversion i can definitely see why you decided to go the route of buying one ready done.

Best of luck with the multi conversions and all the wallet emptying months to come !!!

haha yeah cheers for helping mate! the paint on it would have needed touching up anyway/respraying and the boot was still silver so it needed to be done properly so i chose black. not so sure on it being that incognito in the end as it will have my black oz wheels on so will probably be quite noticable!

i am tempted with tints too, but only slight tints on the rears, as i don't like the idea of people looking into my boot etc. not that i have anything to hide!

the main fact that the hard work and cost had already been done to it to make it widebody was a massive plus point for me, and at the right price it was a steal to be honest. if grizz didn't sell it to me he would have probably made more by selling all the parts off it i reckon.

are you doing a widebody avant then?

well not much to update yet, still waiting for the engine, but as son as its here the work can start. so i still have time to have fun driving around in the saloon for a bit until i give it to grizz and lee to fettle with for months on end!

Ash
Ash25

Sorry for the lack of any updates whatsoever on this project, but its been slow going and i have been pretty busy.

Well so far we are still waiting for a suitable RS4 engine to start work on for the saloon build so the engine swap to the avant will only be done once the engine is here, which has given me time to get the interior plans for the black avant started. most of this part will prob be of no interest to most on here as its nothing to do with performance, and with all the weight i will be adding will probably reduce performance/handling as well!

The avant is now at the audio guys at 360 Auto Audio Design who are nicely based near Grizz on the wirral. these guys are top notch when it comes to audio installs and everything to do with that respect of car tuning. my spec to them was that this car is going to be a daily driver and that it needs to be comfortable and have very good sound quality. with this in mind for my saloon i began looking and buying lots of lovely second hand goodies about 2 years ago which was never put into the saloon, so its all going into the avant. i will deal with the saloon when the time comes...probably at the end of the year?

the plan was to get rid of most of the road noise the B5 suffers from, and also to reduce the wind noise as well. the lower the background level, the better the car audio can perform. of course i do love the exhaust note and so this will probably only mainly be heard from outside/windows down, but as this is a DD then i am not too worried about that. The only problem with this approach is that the only way to do this would be to deaden panels and add mass which is a big performance car NO-NO, but as this car has quite a lot of power already i don't think it will be too compromised.

i am going to be putting some amps in the boot floor with a sub flush on the side, and a new HU up front, with active speakers.i won't bore you all with that, the finished pics once its done will be enough i think. the boot install is going to done so that it will use the least amount of space possible, be subtle so not to scream steal me, and also so i can use the avant as a load lugger if needs be.

i am planning on retrimming the inside plastics with black leather to give the car a more luxurious feel (maybe with some alcantara - maybe headlining? not decided on that yet) and also a few other nice mods which i think will compliment the car, but i will leave them until the end

soooo at the moment the latest pics are from a couple of weeks ago, and at that point the car had been towed to 360 audio, as it has no engine, been stripped out, and had most of the sound deadening put in.

I also have a flat bottomed steering wheel to go in courtesy of H8CAK (Cheers!) that will be retrimmed to be a little bit fatter and to look more like the RS4 wheel. there are loads of other bits to sort out regarding the interior but i thought i would post up some pics of the progress so far....

The paintwork still needs to be finished, and obviously the rest of the car needs to be put together, but its slowly getting there! at the moment they are hopefully sorting out the speaker pods for the front doors which are going to be very subtle as well.

i am planning on upgrading the current rs4 milltek downpipes to 3" ones and also to have some wagner sidemounts on it so hopefully this will push the power up a bit to cope with all the extra weight in the car i am putting in. after its all done, the car should hopefully be a LOT quieter, and maybe look a bit more modern and have a nicer plush 'feel' to it, with AWESOME audio to boot as well

the idea is to have the saloon as more of a 'raw' power car and the avant as a more of a subtle cruiser. the saloon car specs are going to have to wait until the avant is running smoothly, but as soon as the avant is done and ready i will be moving onto the saloon, which will be more exciting i think as that is where all the good stuff is going to be done

sorry if the slow progress is a bit dull, but this sort of stuff takes quite a lot of time to get right!

hopefully i will try and get some more pics of the interior bits being done up later this week.

Cheers for looking

cheers guys!

well the dynamat stuff will add quite a lot of weight and so will the rest of the boot build with the amps and sub going in there but you are right jules, with the saloon going big  it doesn't really matter too much for the avant.

One thing i am still not decided on yet is what to put on the rear badgewise?

i am currently going with blacked out rear audi rings and new style S4 badge, but might leave the S4 badge out. the front rings will be blacked out, and my black OZ racing wheels will be going on it so it will hopefully look nice and stealthy. just need to think about the rear badge. i might just keep it clean with no badges whatsoever, but when i did that to the saloon it just didn't look 'finished' if you know what i mean?

hopefully i can get some more updated pics of the audio install progress soon as it looks pretty dull at the moment just stripped out.

what do people reckon on the rear badge then?

Ash, just a thought/idea about a nice addition to your ICE. Have you considered putting in an iPad? I saw one in a yank car and it was absolutely brilliant.

It'll give you pretty much a full entertainment system from just the 1 item.

funny you should mention that mate, i was looking into this when they first announced it as a viable alternative to an incar pc.

apart from the cost of it it seems like a good idea but for my use it may not be the best. i had already bought a HU with built in sat nav and ipod support which can play dvds etc, so i already had most things i need.

it would look pretty cool though, as it can get large screen internet in the car, either through tethering to the phone or if you had a 3g version it could then work independently. only problem is it would either need to be fabricated into the dash or roof somewhere (kind of makes it more cost effective to have a full on carpc then) or removable which makes it look like an add-on too much for. i am not a fan of thing stuck to the windscreen and wires everywhere. then i would have to take it with me everywhere when not in the car which is a ballache in itself.

if they ever get chepaer i might think about fabricating one in the roof or somewhere which looks like it was meant to be there but the main thing i have against it is its greatest plus point as well - the whole Apple 'walled in garden' approach. its UI is amazing and really easy to use but i am 'tweaker' at heart and would like to add what i want when i want, not be obstructed by apple's rules which is where it is good and bad. their approach is good in that 'everything works' but i like a few more options. the iphone is great though

hmm went on an apple rant there, sorry!

the ipad would be a good entertainment system, but  i think a proper dedicated system is for me. good idea though, and some people have done great work with it in their cars so far. i think for sat nav it would be brilliant.

one app i have seen is Rev, and also Dashcommand which means you can see diagnostic info from the OBD-II port (you will need a wireless adaptor to the port - expensive). this app looks good as it shows things on the iphone/touch/pad but i think it is mainly for play rather than actual good use, but looks good nevertheless. check it out, search for rev app or something on itunes/google.

cheers si   well with both amps and the sub the extra weight is probably already equivalent to another passenger especially when all the sound deadening is in and the pods and boot build bits. i can't really say at the moment, i will ask the installer guy and see how much sound deadening he has used. it will be a lot though, like 2 people or so?

That amp you have is massive ....
Ash25

Little update......

grizz wrote:
That amp you have is massive ....

yes it is......(sorry if this car audio bit bores some people!)

The amp will JUST fit into the boot with all the boxing needed in the build and for the fans etc. The MC4000M amp will be running the front speaker drivers (3-way active setup) and the second Mac amp (not pictured) will be running the rest and the sub.

The other item on the amp is a cool looking VU meter which i will be getting mounted up front.....its totally useless but its pure car audio porn...well i think it is anyway! (don't mind the dust on the amp etc as its been in storage for ages waiting to get installed!).

i am in two minds on where to stick the VU meter actually. i was going to have it where the ashtray is but it just wont fit there, so its either going to go above the central vents on the dash and be moulded into the dash somehow ( a bit like the clocks with a sunhood etc) or it will take the place of the central vents, with maybe a little gap either side so some air/heat can pass beside it?

the VU meters won't sit as high as in the pics as it will be sunk into the dash a little and maybe tilted backwards a little bit, so it won't be too high and odd looking.

I know it prob won't be to everyones taste as its going against the OEM look and all that, but i think it will look pretty nice, and of course a little different! the top of the dash will probably be trimmed in alcantara and maybe the roof, but i am undecided on that bit for now, might stick with leather on the dash and leave the roof lining alone.

The main thing is that the VU meters on the unit and on the amps are blue (classic Mcintosh colour) but i am hopefully going to get them changed to red to match the audi interior.

So far the car is mostly deadened and had the luxury liner pro put down to dampen road noise, and the front doors are nearly ready to be trimmed. they have been sorted out to hold 2 of the drivers for the front speaker setup, with the midbass and the bass driver in the door card, and the midrange and tweeter going to be going up top on the dash/a-pillar in a discrete fashion. the speakers are going to look OEW in a way that they will have black speaker grills/cloth over them so not to draw too much attention.

original door card

doors now

the doors are hopefully going to be recovered in black leather, with the speakers in their own pods behind the doorcard, bolted onto the actual door, rather than just the doorcards as they are in stock form.

Now onto the pics for the rest of the car and the way it is now.....

The subwoofer position is gonna be changed to be in the spare wheel well now as when it was in the side of the boot it wouldn't fit once the amp build was in place. the second Mcintosh amp will go in the side where the sub was going to be placed.

I had a chat with the installer John from 360 design and he said the weight of the dynamat and liner pro stuff was probably about 40kg. then we have the weight of the amps and sub to go in, so all in all not as much weight has been added as i thought there would be in the first place.

This is all getting done while the car is waiting on the engine, and will hopefully be fully done before the engine swap.

Some of you may have noticed the fuel pump has been dynamatteed over, but worry not! it will be cut around so it will be easily accessible with the amp build also taking the pump into consideration. it will be getting an uprated pump from the saloon, and will also have the 3" downpipes put on and the wagner sidemounts so that hould up the power a little bit.

Now do i go for some Tial 605's on it and sell on the K04's?

Cheers for looking

yeah jules i was in two minds at first about hacking the door cards but its the only way to get decent sound from these cars to be honest. you could just dynamat the doorcard to hell and make it as stiff as possible and try to mount some 5" woofers in the stock position but with the rest of the car being fully deadened i thought what the hell, might as well do the whole thing properly. it will hopefully look quite stealth once its trimmed and covered up. john and his brother who are doing the audio build even managed to keep the doorcard pocket (well some of it) as well which is good. they mimicked the rear edge for the new front edge of the pocket which i think was a nice touch if you look closely.

yeah once its all up and running i am sure i will make it to a meet at some point! if not pop round for a blast once its done

I have to say the workmanship John and his brother, gareth have shown, as well as their passion for car audio and attention to detail is second to none. they are top blokes and would highly recommend them. if you are considering even just a change of HU then i suggest you go to them for a quote or even just a chat about what they could offer you. they have now seen the inner workings of a B5 so should be familiar with it after this build! they might be fed up once its done and they start on the saloon though!

Hi all, not been on srs much lately so sorry for the lack of updates to this but unfortunately i haven't been too well recently and so things have slowed down a bit so the car hasn't been top on the priorities lately ! i need to have some bowel surgery but once done should be all good.

first of all the avant is having the boot build done as we speak and then the panels will be in the hands of the trimmers soon, but of course it will be awhile for that to be done so not really much to update there.

as i will be using the silver saloon for a bit longer i have had the guys at 360 auto design fab me up the front door cards for the saloon as a pseudo temporary fix until the avant is all done. i have had some 8" midbass drivers fitted into the front door cards as well as have them deadened a bit with some leftover dynamat from the avant build. having the doors deadened has immediately made a massive difference to the sound and i would highly recommend this to everyone even before changing speakers etc. just deadening the door cards would make a big difference to the standard bose setup as well, but i was looking for some more upfront bass so went for the 8" Seas lotus drivers. I am using some spare alpine tweeters temporarily placed on the dash to hear how it sounds, but they are not permanent and i will get something sorted out once the avant is done.

the drivers were mounted on some mdf rings and then the door cards were covered in some oem look vinyl. i havent got the speaker covers/grills yet but they will eventually be covered in speaker cloth/grill and the door cards will probably be covered in alcantara or leather at some point in the future so the cards have been temporarily finished in the vinyl oem stuff. the guys normally send off the leather retrimmking etc to someone else, but as the vinyl stuff is just temporary it was done in-house quickly as it will prob be coming off later anyway. as a temp measure i think it looks pretty good in my opinion.

now some quick pics of the door cards and both cars in the audio shop.

applying some deadening

and one to promote the shop

some of you may notice i also managed to convert my single din to double din centre console which was a bit of a ballache and i have the cuts to prove it! but i think it looks a lot better now that the radio is bolted in properly. before everytime i accelerated hard the radio came flying out of its slot! i used a double din convertor thing from metra (ebay jobbie)which fit quite well.

Also had a bit of a scare when i went to visit grizz and lee at unit 20 to sort out a power steering failure ( ended up that a jubilee clip had worn through the pipe after the reservoir which caused a massive hhole to suddenly appear one day and dump fluid all over the road....not fun doing 3 point turns after that happened!). i had thought the car didn't 'feel' right and had the tracking done a few weeks ago which helped but it wasn't totally right. basically felt very skittish and had loads of what felt like bump steer so had lee have a look, and look what he found at the rear end......

it was totally disconnected and flopping in the wind!!!! no wonder the car wasn't handling right. looked like the rubber mounting bit had failed or something so some new plastic ones were fitted as a temp measure before some more metal ones are in stock. I have to say the lads and gal at unit 20 were awesome as usual as the part was in that day and fitted so i could safely get home.

anyway, still waiting for the rs4 engine, as once its in then the swap can be done. it has at least given the john and gaz at the audio shop time to do all the work properly and deal with their probably most annoying customer ever as i keep adding stuff for them to do!

hopefully there will be some more updates soon once i have had the surgery and the cars are ready for their transplant operation!

Cheers for looking, and staying interested guys

hi mate, yeah i did think about the daytona grey at first, mainly for the saloon actually but as the saloon was silver and i always thought the rs4 looked brilliant in black i chose black in the end. once the saloon is getting sorted i am thinking of doing some minor colour bits on it to make it look a bit more unique though so i have my eye on some daytona grey accents etc.

cheers mate! i prefer the B5 shape too. the B7 is nice, just not as nice as the B5, in my humble opinion that is

Right, its been awhile since i updated this thread, and to be honest not much has happened with the avant project apart from some more audio stuff. most of the wiring is in and a lot of the bootbuild is coming along nicely, but nothing really to show picturewise.

Soooo, the saloon has been updated a bit to get it sorted for the xmas MRC RR day (well hopefully it will be ready). Had Grizz and Lee install some lovely Wagner SMIC's on the beast and also had some 3" downpipes installed too   Also had the front discs upgraded from the RS4 B5 discs to some Phaeton ones, as i already had the RS6 calipers. mostly an easy fit but the bells were changed for the bigger discs to fit.

Here are some pics of the lovely goodies now on the car.....

New Wagner Side mount

Both sides done, the left has the carbon shroud installed

Previous RS4 Milltek Dual 2.25" Downpipes

New 3" downpipes with 2.25" downpipes

Fitted to the car

The car is running an MRC map on it which previously made 436bhp, and Rich from Viper Tuning is coming out tomorrow to do a remap on the car to get the most out of the new upgrades. the main difference so far has been the great noise the larger downpipes make, i was surprised at the difference actually. much better, more throatier, and more V6 growl is apparent. the biggest thing i noticed was that the drone i had from arund 2000-3000 revs has sunsided a lot and the car is actually much more pleasant to drive as a daily driver which is good.

Hoping for Rich to do his best and make the most out of the new additions tomorrow, should be fun to see what it makes on the RR day.

What do people think it will do then?

i am hopefully getting Rich to install the live map switching in as well, so i can have a power map and a mega boring good mpg low power map for the missus and long drives etc. (if thats even possible!).

Right, as i havent posted these pics yet here are some quick pics of the car last summer, just because i like whoring pics of my car

Oh and one last pic...

the headlining and other bits have gone to get tarted up hopefully ready for the RR day, as the car is going through a mini audio rebuild as well

Cheers for looking, will hopefully update after the new map is put on the car tomorrow

haha i second that! The discs are amazing to be honest. since i changed from the B5 RS4 discs the braking effect is noticably better.

Well its been about a week since the car has been mapped by Viper Tuning, many thanks to rich for coming over and sorting it all out, awesome chap to deal with and he also knew his stuff too

I would happily recommend him to map your cars as he has done an amazing job on this one. The car is smooth all the way to the redline, and the slight judder in low gears is now gone, though there is still a 'hunting' issue at idle which is probably due to the injectors. might be getting them flow tested soon. i have to say the car pulls so much better with the new intercoolers and downpipes fitted, i have no idea what sort of power the car now has, but it feels smooth and very very powerful which i am happy with. if i am chasing numbers (the magical 500!) then i will probably get rich to write a super duper performance map to push as much out of the k04's as possible, but at the moment he says its running smoothly at 1.4/1.5 bar i think? (i think its about 20psi of boost, i am sure it could run higher but as its a daily driver at the moment i don't want to push the car too far just yet   ).

didn't manage to get the switching map thingy installed this time, but it will be at a later date.

Still have a lot of things to sort on the car (mainly aesthetic interior trim and audio stuff) and hopefully it will be all done this week.

I have also managed to find some wheels on ebay that will be fitted once i manage to find some 10mm spacers (anyone got any i could buy off them?), and the black wheels that are on now will be transferred to the black avant.

With the 8mm spacers i have currently the wheels JUST clears the calipers by about 2mm , so i reckon that if i use 10mm spacers it should be safe enough.

Some pics of the brakes

Well hopefully the car will have the rest of the interior sorted by the end of the week, and hopefully there will be some more pics of the car with its new wheels on as well as i am still running on the black ones until i find some spacers.

Cheers for looking!

Cheers guys, things are going slowly at the moment as my health is still a bit rubbish, but as soon as i am in tiptop shape i am sure the projects will pick up steam.

Well, since the saloon has had new intercoolers,DP's, and been remapped i have to say the last few weeks the car has been a joy to drive. well it would be if i had most of the interior in it but thats been getting some loving care and attention that it deserved (after all, the bodywork has been modified, its the interiors turn!).

it still has a little hunting idle problem, so gonna get the injectors flow tested to see if they are the culprit. when that is sorted out then it will be an amazing car to drive.

So, to the interior. since having the car widebodied, and having the sunroof retrofitted, i have never actually got the sunroof to work (2 years and counting i think!). as my car never had a sunroof, the was no wiring loom ofcourse for it in the headling. well i bought a facelift sunroof control, and also found some wiring harness connectors on ebay from an RS4 and Gaz and John at 360 Auto Design did their electronic magic and managed to work out what wire went where and did what i thought was going to be impossible....They got the Sunroof working!!!!! AND they got my interior lights to work as well!!!! (both have not worked since the widebody treatment!). I have to say these boys have done an amazing job on the car so far with this and also the audio install that has been done. they are also perfectionists when it comes down to it, and do a brilliant job.

Pic of open sunroof!

I know, I know, its just a sunroof, but its something i always wanted and its never worked until now. always the little things that please.
They fitted resistors as well to my rear LEDs so i don't get the annoying bulb warning beep ALL the time, which to be honest was doing my head in.

Right, i have to say the interior has let the car down, lots of loose trim bits, scuffs, etc. all from the car generally being abused for 10 years, so i decided as it was getting a full audio setup installed, i would get some interior bits retrimmed. John and Gaz have been busy stripping the interior and sending/personally delivering and collecting it to MJ Interiors for me, and have fitted the first bit to be finished, the dash.

Sorry for the pics, they dont do it justice as it was taken in the workshop on the phone. once its all done i will take some proper pics.

The dash has been trimmed in black alcantara, and i have to say the job MJ Interiors have done is absolutely amazing. the stitching is brilliantly done.

the car is still waiting for other bits and pieces to be fitted back to it, but hopefully it might be done in time for the weekend.

once the retrim is all done and back in place, the audio side will be tidied up and finished, then its time to get the audio install tuned up as the car will be pretty much finished then.

Once its all back together i will post up more pics of the finished interior.

Cheers for looking.
