S4 with S2 K24 Turbos

We finally got Chris S4 on the dyno:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOyyC5R1v70

524PS, 670Nm at 5k

The car has tubular manifolds made by chris. 2 Audi S2 K24 turbos with 2 external wastegates. Custom 3" dual exhaust made by chris. It runs with no mafs.

CliveH

Nice work guys!
ScottR

Interesting.

Where does the hose from the PCV breather go?  Has he fitted a catch can?

Also, I see the DV's are now venting to the atmosphere.  Has Chris had a chance to do any logs to see how that effects lag during gear changes?
Chris M

I have a breather pipe into intake bank 1. Not looked at any logs that closely really.
Juice

very nice.
i was admiring this s4 recently when it was parked outside the gates.
exactly how i would want my s4 to look and go
peterp1972

Didnt know you had an s4. Are you changing from the RS?

How well does it drive part throttle and how do you get a load reading for the ABS??
Doug

runs as good without mafs as it runs with a maf.
MarkB

and the ABS still works OK?

Looks a neat install. Are we going to see any more cars setup like this soon?
Chris M

Yeah all works fine
S4

Nice one, look at all the space you have when you have no maf's and Y pipe.

Darren
MarkB

Can we see the dyno plot please?
StumpyRS4

Wasn't it written up a while back about alot of US cars deleting the MAF, and then getting slated?!
Doug

no stumpy - you are think of egts sensors.
Doug

plot
CliveH

Almost identical figures to my RS6!
Doug

not the LAG though

So how is the lag compared to RS6 turbos? How these compare in specwise to rs6?
Matt_D

Nice work chaps, is that a standard s4 engine (apart from  necesary bits like injectors and fuel pump) with just K24's turbos bolted on ?

i wonder what RS2 turbos would do
Doug

RS2 turbos would be interesting!

Chris has stock rods, stock heads - I am not sure if he put thick headgaskets on.

We need to get milkybarkid on the dyno to see his rs6 turbo setup lag compared to chris.

Are the RS2s k26s Doug?
JohnnyB

Think it would be interesting.
Venari

That's a "I'm thinking about it, thinking about it... WAHAY, here we go!!" curve, isn't it?
Adam

Nice, certainly thinking outside the box there. Good work Chris
ScottR

I hope you've got a kidney donor waiting Chris... the boot in the back from 4000rpm up is going to knacker yours in no time!!

No k24's. I think RS2's would spoil the drivability of the car. Its a laggy turbo when 5 cylinders are spinning it let alone only 3...!!
Rick

How does the ECU calculate fuelling now?  Is it speed density, with closed loop on cruise?  Did this just involve changing the maps or is the code actually changed?

Rick
MilkybarKid

Looks cracking!

Get me booked in then FS!
SR71

Maybe we should just delete my MAF's Doug??

That curve looks almost identical to mine...
Doug

Not quite the same graphs:

SR71

OK so not quite the same at low to midrange...

But I only use that end of the rpm range once during an outing...

Just need that RS6 curve on there now.

micckyj

Do you need an aftermarket ecu to run without a maf on the s4 or can the standard one cope?

cheers
Mike
Doug

orignal ecu
micckyj

ahhh right so its just a case of altering the map on the ecu

What's causing the drop around 3500rpm?

Good results Chris

Ive always wondered about how these cars would run with an external wastegate and such.

Would it drive any differently as a daily or require much maintenance? I'm quite interested in this kind of setup.

Are the wastegates re-routed back into the exhaust?
shobe

Is there any updates on this doug? Is it still running with no MAF and if so hows it running, im contamplating doing this on my k04's just to be diffrent.....
confusionhunter

hmmmm.... Ive got 2 K24s lying about the garage!
Any vids? interesting to hear what the external wastgates sound like on the V6!
ANDY S2

You can also use a VOLVO k24 7400 turbo as a different route ,RS2 power but half the price ,a guy on the S2FORUM has used one to good effect .

pretty sure chris sold this phil.
shobe

ahh ok, cant find anything anywhere on here or audizine about anyone trying this..

Surley removing airbox and ypipe can only be a good thing air flow restriction wise, just wondering how it would cope long term with no maf, i presume you can map it out when mapping the car
jimbo

pretty sure the car ended up with a maf back on.
Chris M

I put the car back on the K04s, the external wastegates were playing up. Kinda wish i'd kept them on the car, but i still have them here for the next one!!
Car was fine maf-less, only put it back to stock to sell.
Aragorn

Was it really worth it? The power figures attained can be had from more "traditional" options like the RS6 turbos, and because the RS6's are far more modern you end up with a much earlier spool and a better power graph as a result, as can be seen in the overlayed plot a couple of pages back?

With the hassle of making some non-standard turbos fit, it just doesnt seem like a great choice to me?
Doug

it was free for chris because he had all the bits lying around apart from the external wastegates

So free(ish) Vs 1800 for rs6 turbos - depends if you class that as worth it or not.
Chris M

Yeah plus manifolds, intake pipes etc.

I made everything myself, plus no one else had done those turbos on the 2.7 engine, its something different.

If you were paying someone to do it then yeah it might not seem like a great idea but the car was still quick.
shobe

so do we think theres anything to be gained by running a k04'd s4 with no maf / ypipe etc?

That would be me, more then rs2 power, and same spool as the standard k24 7000.
BennyBoo

Just to raise a couple of q's not answered yet..

What is the dip at 3500 for and would cruise still work with no MAF..?

I'm getting interested in k24's seeing a few go on eBay.de quite cheap recently..
