Sizzling pork

I've just got a 2000 registered Porsche 996 Carrera 4, not to replace the S4 but to add to it. I felt it was something I should do before the last affordable 911 got just too expensive for me to be happy about spending so much on a car.

And I'm delighted with it. Goes fast enough for me up to and (I assume) well beyond road limits and will also potter along with no bad manners at all.

I was aware of the exploding engines problems and when this one was advertised with a full Hartech engine rebuild 12k miles ago I though it was worth the effort of a trip oop north to see it. The seller was very straight on the phone and said that it is not cosmetically concours and the exhaust drones a bit. Neither of these worried me much and apart from the engine rebuild I was much more interested in the fact that he had just renewed the rear discs and pads and would do the fronts as well and that the tyres were new on the front and not too old on the back. Finally, the asking price was very competitive.

The colour is Zenith Blue and there is a trace of purple in it that comes out in certain lights. I have to say it makes a nice change from all our silver cars!

I am, of course, following in the footsteps of several others on here - Paz, coullstar and Jules to my knowledge and perhaps there are others. I say get one while you can!

A couple of pics.

Nice one, as you say get them now as there all seem to be going one way.

Hartech rebuild is total piece of mind.

Just feels so right to drive don't they.
Richspec

me too! same colour, age and model, and a trillion stonechips on mine.
Mine was on the Hartech maintenance plan for a few years so that added to my piece of mind. M
ScottR

Very nice.

There will be no engine pulls required on this one then!
daybar

Yes, I don't expect to lose money on this one! Probably won't get silly like the aircooled ones but I don't mind that - it would make me too nervous to drive it if it was getting more valuable by the day.

I've had the car for a week so it's early days - so far it's been averaging the best part of 30mpg so I'm obviously not trying hard enough
coullstar

They are quite frugal to be honest, yours a 3.4?

It's a car, Scott, anything is possible! There seem to be one or two jobs that are easler in the absence of the engine, and I think most of them were done when Hartech had it, but Fate's finger is fickle

Yes, 3.4 which should be good for 300bhp. The car is a lot lighter than an S4 of course and I guess a bit more aerodynamic so that would help fuel consumption. The after market silencers (Fabspeed, apparently) do drone at motorway speeds but make a great sound when accelerating in the gears and there's a nice deep rumble at low revs.

I have to go to Gatwick in a minute and I have to say I am looking forward to the journey
Graham

Well done Dave.

Thought it was the same username when I saw your post over on 911uk..

Sounds like you shopped wisely, as Hartech seem to have a very good reputation for their engine work.

I'm one of the others, who have followed a similar path - sold the RS4 to buy a 997 a few years ago now..
daybar

"daybar" as a username is usually OK without numbers etc wherever I want to use it - keeps everything simple, which is a good thing at my age

And they seem a friendly, knowledgeable bunch on 911uk, much like here.
Jules

Nice one Daybar! Great choice - I'm sure you'll really enjoy it

Funnily enough I've just bought a new Porky myself ...

You'll need to post a review on 911uk - just to upset the purists of course..
DavidT

Very nice Dave Fancy doing the forum track session at the VAG Tuner Live in July?

Shall we move Jules new motor posts to his own members cars thread? (very nice btw Jules ) Have you had a members car thread before Jules?

Hahaha - I couldn't bear all the incredibly anal and pompous flak I'd get in response Graeme

Cheers Dave - I think I had a 'members cars' post right back from when this forum started eleventy zillion years ago ...
daybar

Yes, very nice car, Jules  But what happened to the previous one - did it get too valuable

Indeed it did Dave! The way 996 turbos were increasing in price selling it seemed too good an opportunity to miss, especially given as it was on 107K miles (as you never know when the bottom could fall out of that market and prices crash!) ... sold it for only 2K less than I paid for it 4 years ago!
Alps

Jules congratulations on the absolute beauty. If I see you drive past me you will be referred to as "tosser" - purely due to my bitter jealousy!

Have to say it again - absolutely regret not buying a 996 turbo a few years back when I had the opportunity! I've seen these now going for 30k for a semi-decent car.
Jules

Cheers Alps

Ooooooohhh a Pork thread
Yep a Hartech rebuild gives some reassurance! so much car for the money.

Nice one Jules, well played mate, looking good there.
Jules

Cheers Nige  - long time no see, how's your 964?
