Smoke + No boost = ??????

Today started a good day... washed car, put new number plates on, car looked GOOOOOOOOOOD but it seems its ended on a bad note....

Driving along the dual carriage and then as quick as the boost came in the boost was gone

Looked out the back and no smoke at first, but if i accellerated smoke would be emitted from the exhaust

I'm not in a position to carry out a Vag scan or pressure test.

Car drive ok off boost. No unusal noises.

What do you think the problem is ? Blown turbo('s) ?
5potmad

is it white smoke??
AdamS4

Can't tell... its dark

There is a funny smell tho, something i've not smelt before.
ScottR

If your exhaust looks like your avatar then yes, blown turbo.

When mine blew it was just as you'd described.  A fair bit of smoke when it went pop, but it wasn't smoking on idle.  I was able to unplug the N75 and drive it around off-boost for a couple of days without it smoking.

Then a couple of days later... BOOM!!!!  Shed loads of smoke even on idle.
5potmad

Think the smoke is the oil going past the bearings and being burnt????????
H8CAK

White smoke = Blown Turbo

Black smoke = Tbb, Split pipe ect

I could smell oil from the exhaust when my turbo's let go.
AdamS4

Just been out with a torch... white smoke

Bollox
H8CAK

Not good fella, On the up side K04's ?
audimad100

sorry to hear that, nightmare
davs4

I also got this from a failed ignition amplifier......
AdamS4

H8CAK wrote:

Tial's probably
H8CAK

The way forward
AdamS4

I can now confirm the colour of the smoke.... During my drive home (with the N75 valve disconnected)... shite loads of blue smoke when the engine is under load and white smoke on lift off or idle
AdamS4

I'm tempted to try those Chinese rep or JHM reps K04's.
AdamS4

How much to S4's go for with blown turbo('s) ?
jaytee

Not a lot, You can buy them for 3.5k with working turbo`s.
aposegil

adam why you thinking of selling?
AdamS4

jaytee wrote:

Standard, high milage and oooppp north.... Everythings cheaper oooppp north

I would happily let it go for 3k-3.5k

aposegil wrote:
adam why you thinking of selling?

Because i've just bought a house and can't really afford to fix

This is how i've left it so far:

aposegil

ah not good boat to be in. but if you have teh equipment to pull the engine why not just put another set of k03's on there for the mean while?
AdamS4

Car is up forsale
H8CAK

U should get that spare set of K03's that are forsale on here and do it youself. your get atleast 2k more for the car.
Matt_D

Sure its turbos and not headgasket as white smoke can inidicate water getting in the combustion chamber , but then i suppose if it was only a headgasket turbos would still boost
audimad100

H8CAK wrote:

i agree with carl, but i would be tempted to stick on a pair of turbos from ebay, they have to work long enough to flog the car and get your money back. you never know the turbos on ebay may be ok
AdamS4

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PA...CarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

484 + 66 P&P !!!!
H8CAK

Gotta be worth a punt adam? U can sell it as a K04 car then and get the 6 - 7k ? Do it Adam
Dont give it away fella as your only regret it!
sparkyvw

dont buy them ebay k04s. Just spend the money on used k03s.
iR8V10

...bad times dude, hope it all works out Ad.
davs4

I have a set of K03's removed after 70k if you're interested mate.
Be a shame to sell up........
jaytee

Go for Dave`s offer Adam, i`m sure he`ll do his best for you
sparkyvw

http://pistonheads.com/sales/1509628.htm
AdamS4

Right, i've spent the last day reading through pages and pages on Audizine about the eBay K04's or CK04's as they are now known and the verdict is......

There CRAP

Boost creep issues, balancing issues, possible material issues... the list goes on. The wastegate hole is smaller than a K03 from what i've seen and read.

As you can tell, i'm still in 2 minds about selling it or fixing it.

I've looked into various turbo options, ebay K04's, RP/CTS K04's, geniune K04's, Geniune K03's, 2nd hand K03's, 2nd hand K04's and even the Tial S605 kit. So many options for so various amounts of money !!

No brainer. Why sell for 3,500 if you can buy these for however much, repair it and sell it for 6,500? Do it and get it repaired.
jaytee

Adam. If you can afford to keep it and you have the space put it in the garage or throw a cover over it....... SORN it until you decide which way to go with the turbo`s. If you drop it now you`ll regret it and lose shit loads of cash in the process. It`s such a nice car mate.
5potmad

Surely some peeps could pile round the house and give a hand in exchange for tea and maryland cookies
AdamS4

This is pretty much how its looking so far... I've gone past the point of no return. Loom is disconnected, fuel lines disconnected, just need to get under the car now.

AdamS4

Got the engine and box out today.... Geeezzzzzz was that a tough cookie. Took a good 5 hours. Had a few snags, things i didn't noticed to undo and remove. I let the pictures do the talking:

5potmad

Good effort mate. I aint got the balls to do that
AdamS4

After having a quick look today, i can clearly see its the passenger side turbo thats gone. Its all wet and oily and there is a blade missing from the exhaust housing turbine
audimad100

way to go Adam she is to good to let go cheap
JasonA

Yea can see the oil sitting there, reminds me of my old ones, the same turbo went with mine too with the same symptoms.

Wish i had the gear and time to take the engine out myself, would have saved a packet! Good effort!!
AdamS4

Spent a couple of hours on it today. Removed the gearbox, clutch, drained the oil and removed passenger side turbo. Not only has an oil seal gone and a turbine blade gone missing, there is alot of shaft play... I'm guessing the seal went, oil lubrication dropped and bearings probably wore out.

Also, not sure if my flywheel is ok, what do people think ???

Some pics:

H8CAK

Good work Adam Im proud of you Anything is possible now. So what turbos you going for?
aposegil

good to hear you been getting on with it

also looks like the clutch has been contaminated i.e. oil? because it looks ok i.e. not worn but the colouring on the metal parts i.e. flywheel and pressure plate face. Has the input shaft seal to the gearbox leaking?

otherwise keep up the good work and what turbos have you decided on?
AdamS4

Thanks guys, i'm going for KKK K04's. I would love the Tial S605 kit but can't afford it.

Anyone know how i can lock the flywheel to undo the bolts ?
MarkB

There is a tool to lock the flywheel AFAIK

This is building into a nice little project. Should it be in the P&B forum?
AdamS4

Feel free to move it Mark

Do you or anyone know of a way to lock it without the tool ?
aposegil

put gear box bolt back in then wedge with huge screw driver with mate on there end and then crack it of

dont push it impact it
MarkB

AdamS4 wrote:

Moved
AdamS4

Already tried an impact gun and that almost rounded the head off !!!
aposegil

long big bar then

if jammed the flywheel before using a very big screw driver and one of the gearbox bolts in place.
AdamS4

Got it off. Will be popping it to my mates to get skimmed next week.

Got the turbo's today and have sent them off to Turbo Dynamic's for a refurb

Should i get new oil lines or just make sure my current ones are clean and clear ?
H8CAK

New lines would be best. You dont wana risk it. Whre did u get your turbos?
AdamS4

But if i have them cleaned and cleared, why would i need new ones ?

Surely if its because of oil contamination, then it won't matter as there is oil all around the engine already.

I got the turbo's from stevieyid
AdamS4

Think its going back up forsale
JohnnyB

The oil pipes get carbon build up inside them. For the cost of pipes would advise replacing them.
H8CAK

AdamS4 wrote:

Dont be silly. There are other options
AdamS4

I can't afford new turbo's

I've just bought a house..... money is sooooooooo tight at the mo

now that is one huge money pit.
audimad100

its a shame, such a good example, have you got anywhere you can store it until funds are  available
H8CAK

AdamS4 wrote:

Cant u store it out the way for a few months and get a banger to run around in?

that would be my choice especially as you have done all the hard work stripping out the motor
MarkB

At least get some more K03's to go on it to get it running again.
AdamS4

Up forsale

I really can't afford it. Sorry guys.

H8CAK

Has no one got a set of K03's kicking about? Come on guys there must be someone?
jaytee

Daves4 offered him a pair on page 2
s4woody

if a set of decent turbo's are going for free why not get it over to my place with a few extra pair of hands and lets get it back on the rd for you adam..
mikeyquattro

Top gesture there Woody! That's what I love about this forum. C'mon guys, someone must have some KO3's they want to give to a good cause
audimad100

surely someone has changed out a damaged turbo only to replace the pair. there has to be a turbo that adam can get his ride up and running.
as Mikey said top gestures love the way the guys rally round to help
AdamS4

Today... i'm on a mission !

A mission to find stuff to sell and gather as much $$$$ for new turbo's

I really don't wanna sell but i couldn't see any other way of repairing it. BUT after a good ol chat and idea throwing, i think i can do it !
mikeyquattro

Best of luck Adam
Byzan a4

Shame you are so far away, i could have stored it om my drive behind closed gates for you. It's a shame to sell it for the pittance you will get as a non working car.

Can you not get the bad turbo refurbed?
AdamS4

Little update... thanks to the 2010 budget i've saved a little extra $$$$ so i've decided to go for the RP K04's... http://www.rpturbos.com/products/..._0026_RS4_K04_Audi_2_7T-11-0.html from CTSTurbo.

I've read alot on Audizine about these turbo's and no one has reported a failure yet.... Fingers crossed.
robsey29

good luck hope it all works out and you get her back on the road again!
AdamS4

RP K04's and 034 inlets are here... pics soon
audimad100

good for you Adam, looking forward to some updated pics

Good on you Adam.  Really looking forward to seeing how these RP's perform.  I reckon they will be spot on.
aposegil

mate good to hear its coming along

just injectors and fuel pump now
AdamS4

big mac

just out of interest adam what sort of import duty did you payon these??
AdamS4

Fitted the turbo's and inlet's today....

Juice

Brilliant ! - whens the engine going back in then?

how much were your turbs?
aposegil

so you ready to have it mapped this weekend then

well done, did it all fit perfectly?
S4

AdamS4 wrote:

Nice oak floor, looks like elka or kars, uv varnished 80mm boards.....   Turbos look nice too......

Darren
mikey-s

You did fit o-rings on the turbo inlets didn't you?
AdamS4

Turbo's were $1400

Turbo's fitted perfectly but the passenger side 034 inlet was too tight to fit properly so had to rub down the inside of the inlet.

Engine should be back in the car next weekend (fingers crossed)

Mikey-s, Yup, i did
mikey-s

Just thought I'd ask... wouldn't want you to get the motor in then have to fit the o-rings!

They do look like decently built turbos, can't wait to see the results!
m14rrv

did you get inets with the turbos, i am doing this kko4 job with mine in a few months so anything would help  good job tho
AdamS4

Got it all from CTS Turbo. The 034 inlet pipes were $349.

Just a little update. Got the flywheel back and refitted with the new RS4 clutch. Also clean the engine bay ready for the refit of the engine:

MarkB

AdamS4 wrote:

Do you know how much material was removed from the flywheel friction face?

From the pic it looks like the height of the clutch mounting face hasn't been machined so you will have lost a certain amount of adjustment/clamping force.
S4

Yes I think you are right, well spotted.

The dowels should have been removed and the same amount should have come of both parts.

Darren
AdamS4

Half a mm was removed
AdamS4

Will half a mm make that much difference ?
MarkB

AdamS4 wrote:

I wouldn't like to say either way. To start with it could be fine but you would reach the wear limit much sooner.

I wouldn't use it on my car like that.
audimad100

coming on nicely there Adam, glad you managed to get it all together. how much has the whole set up cost in english, ive been searching for a while for this sort of set up. get all the bits together before i have to pull the motor. keep up the good work and keep us updated
AdamS4

Almost done !!!

Got the flywheel back today and fitted.... along with the clutch and gearbox !

Everythings all bolted up, nice 'n' tight... pretty much ready to be dropped back in !!

Only got the 1 pic as i forgot my camera:

mikeyquattro

Well done Adam. Hope it all goes back in well
AdamS4

Engine went back in today

Rain has called it off for now tho

Just a matter of connecting everything back up, prop, axel's, exhaust, loom, coolant, a/c, intercoolers, fuel lines and power steering.

Probably be another full day and then i'll be turning the key !

Gonna turn the engine over without starting so the fresh oil gets all around the engine, including the new turbo's
lynchy

good to hear Adam glad you kept her and good work fella
