Smokey S3

As heading says when I start up its slightly smokey but eventually goes, any ideas   goes fine and sounds fine though.

Smoke or steam?

What colour is it?
S4 Muzza

Leaking valve stem seals.
colin123

White smoke.
colin123

Anybody local to Stirling fancy doing this for me. Whats average price for getting this done?
coullstar

Stem seals is only when your coasting then give it some throttle and the smoke appears, isn't it?

How quickly does it appear and is it everytime?
S4 Muzza

From what I've read on stem seals it would only smoke on start up after being left for a period of time (overnight for example), then as soon as the excess oil has burned away the smoking would stop?

I was reading up on this a few months ago, admittedly sources were just random forums here and there so could well be inaccurate!

You are correct, but so is Graeme.  When on overrun with the throttle closed (more so at high revs), if the seals are worn, it basically sucks the oil down past the stem seals and when you open the throttle again, it will burn the oil it sucked down, in a puff of blue smoke until it clears.

So will happen when it's hot too.

If this is 'white smoke' could it not just be condensation from the exhaust when it's cold?
colin123

Condensation would only last seconds Norrs ? It blows smoke when sitting idling after driving also. Think a mechanic visit is the answer. Robbin bassas here I come get yer masks on
devcos

White / grey turbo time usually  .
colin123

Was thinking that also. How do I tell what it is just bought it too
devcos

Normally turbo failing smoke smells quite acrid and builds if left to idle , hope you get sorted   .
