Stigs dad's noggy

After owning my b5 s4 Noggy now for 3 happy months I thought it about time I started a thread.
I bought it from another forum member who had already done a lot of work to her. Thanks martin.
After the long drive from swindon to Yorkshire with a permanent  grin on my face I started to put my own little stamp on her.
First thing was a new windscreen due to a stone chip ,  which although not an mot fail ,  bugged me.  Then a call to a cold repair specialist had 3 small dents removed.
Also noticed the viscose fan was catching on the apr  inlet pipes. A short session  with the tin cutters on the blades had it working again.
The mot was due at the end of  October  so off she went for a pre mot  check,  which my usual mot guy reported he wouldn't  mot it as it didn't  have a cat.  I already knew this but you have to try anyway.  Off to my usual specialist  exhaust  fabricator and I duly unloaded a wedge of cash for a 200 cell race cat fitting. Back to the garage for the mot and she went straight through.
After driving the car for all of a week ,  back I went to my exhaust specialist and a cat bypass pipe made and fitted.  I could now enjoy the car all year round and at mot time fit the cat byepass.  Happy days.
A few little mods to the bodywork followed.  First the front bumper was removed and rs4 style grills were fabricated and fitted. These totally  hid all the front mounted intercooler  pipework and deleted the fog lights. Giving the front a less complex and smoother look I think.  I then ordered a genuine rs4 front grill from Germany,  not cheap, to match the rs4 style front bumper.
Once this arrived and fitted the lights looked a little dated. So I ordered a set of face lift head lights and a set  of genuine conversion looms to fit them.  Both again from Germany!  4 days later these arrived .
After removing the old headlights and trying to fit the new face lift ones ,  I found out they wouldn't fit ! Mine was an early pre face lift  model.   Some of you may have had this issue before. Not a problem though the lip causing the issue was duly trimmed away and the clean edge was then etch primed and painted.  I know it will never be seen but it has to be right for me to be happy. The lights were then fitted and plugged in. Happy days. The front now had a fresher look ,  which I am more than happy with.
Only problem I have had so far regarding running and reliability has been an annoying vibration on the front.  I instantly thought this would be a wheel balance issue ,  but after having the wheels balanced twice it was still apparatus.  However on the second trip to the tyre specialists ,  the guy fitting the wheels said a washer had dropped out upon refitting the wheel ,  but he didn't  know where it had come from. Driving back home from the garage the car was still the same.  So up on the ramps and the wheels taken off. As I removed one of the wheels another washer appeared.  I then stripped  the brakes off and found the problem.  Washers had been used to move the brake discs out to stop them fouling the abs sensors.  New 3mm hub spacers ordered and fitted in place of the washers and wheel problem solved.
Hopefully  the photos  I've tried to upload are below  showing the story so far. If not I'll have another go tomorrow.
  Adie.
Stigs dad

Just read back through my message and it should read apparent not apparatus.  Bloody predictive text.
Noggymike

Nice update Aide!

Glad to see you are doing the Noggy proud and doing it right first time

Pics or it never happened tho!
Stigs dad

Cheers Mike
Looks like the photos  haven't  uploaded so I'll  have a word with my son in law to rectify what I'm  doing  wrong and educate me ! Old and thick springs to mind lol.
Just planning my next jobs which involves re spraying some problem areas,  sorting some genuine b5 rs4 alloys out ,  then it's a full suspension  refresh including the subframe.  Better start saving.
   Adie..
NogaroDrew

Genuine b5 rs4 wheels won't fit will they Adie? Far too wide surely for standard arches?
NogaroDrew

Love what you've done so far btw
Stigs dad

Sure I've seen a few saloons with them on ,  but you've got me thinking now. Replicas arent an option so I'll  have to have a rethink on the alloy wheel front if not.  Thanks for the nice comments.
NogaroDrew

Perhaps you're thinking of the Genuine RS4 style wheels that came on Mk1 TTs

Agrred A, but TT are a "RS style" wheel  but there are subtle differences as you know.
C J

Yeah Rs4 wheels are a lower offset so will stick out the arches on an s4. The TT wheels won't fit either as these are 5x100 pcd, b5's are 5x112.

Stigs dad

Thanks lads for the info  I had an idea tt wheels wouldn't  fit but this just confirms it thankyou. Looks like I'm  going  shopping for different wheels that I like now.
gizmo

I have genuine Audi RS4 "style" on my S4, presumably from a B6 or B7 S-line.

Stigs dad

Thanks gizmo there the ones I'm  after. I'll  start looking now.  Happy days.
      Adie.
gizmo

Had them for years. The guy I bought them from bought them by mistake for his S3 (5x100).
Stigs dad

His loss your gain pal. Yours looks awesome with them on especially  in gun metal grey.
gizmo

Always liked these....

Spoilt for choice now lol. If you buy  them pm me if you're  looking at  selling your wheels.

B6 s4 wheels will suit it best

I tend to agree, but nice to see something different maybe?

or maybe not

Stigs dad

Like those as well but like to be a little different. Whatever I go for they have to look like a factory upgrade.  Can't  have blingy wheels where I live ,   I would draw too much unsavoury  attention.  Like your thoughts though.
NogaroDrew

D2 S8 Avus II wheels are a good option but farely rare to find. That's what are on mine. Essentially same as s4 wheels but 18 inch instead of 17 inch

Not that difficult to find, I've got a set on my car right now. And I know someone with a set for sale.

Did your car come with those wheels Andrew? I struggled to find even a spare and rang Prestige who had plenty PFL ones but the FL Avus only come in every so often from what I was told.

Either way a smashing wheel
HPsauce

Yes, mine came with them but I only use them for winters these days; 20's in the summer.
Loads of S8 owners have replaced them with 20's for all year use so I'm surprised there aren't more around.
I just changed my 20's and the guy who bought my old ones is now selling his 18's (the later type as mentioned here), not sure if they are on eBay or how he's getting rid of them.

Personal taste I know, but I still prefer the PF version. Finally sold my set that I'd had for ages just a few weeks ago.
(Difficult to explain that I know, but they were a hangover from my previous PF S8 and I like to keep everything consistent)

I guess the original version are now becoming more common as the cars of that era are dying off! Not that there ever were very many.
stickertone

Where's the pics buddy?
Stigs dad

I've  got my daughter coming up to show me how to upload them on Monday.  I'm  a  right technophobe lol. Give me nuts n bolts and tools any day .

I normally want to take a hammer to the laptop when I'm on Photobucket!
Stigs dad

I have a saying "if it's got t*ts or wheels your gonna have trouble with it " I think I need to add laptops on to that lol. Hopefully loads of photos on Monday going on ,  after my daughter drags me into the 21st century.

Just found out he sold them today, to another A8 owner.
Stigs dad

Cheers hpsauce for letting me know.  Gonna get Christmas  over with and then I'll  have a  proper  look around for some wheels.

Stigs dad

Thanks lads hopefully I've worked it out now.
GET A GRIP TYRECARE

Hi that looks dangerous to me. I've never seen that done before.
Stigs dad

What the washers ?  All done now with proper  3mm spacer.  No more wheel vibrations.
GET A GRIP TYRECARE

Hi what you have done to sort your brakes/wheel wobble is dangerous. Why are the brake disc fouling the abs sensor. You need to sort this and remove the spacer from inside the disc. 1st job.
Stigs dad

Since I've removed  the washers and replaced with the 3mm spacers ,  there's no wheel wobble or vibration under braking.  Without the spacer the disc catches on the sensor.  They are supposed to be b6 s4 front discs and calipers but with what your saying they may not be.  I'll  have to  investigate  further ,  thanks for your concerns.
GET A GRIP TYRECARE

Hi sorry to keep on but does the disc still centralise on the hub. By the looks of it. It can't. Witch is very dangerous.
Stigs dad

That was my concern too. The proper spacer I have used centralisers perfect to the hub and disc. No movement at all.  The washers would have only put pressure locally around the bolt hole causing the vibration.  the spacer I have used puts pressure  all around the wheel hub locking the disc and wheel firmly in place.  It's really no different now to fitting wheels spacers to pull the wheels further out into the arch.  I appreciate  your  feedback though thankyou.
Stigs dad

Out to a garden centre today and finally got round to taking a few decent pictures.

Symon270gti

Looks stunning....

The new lights are they xenon or h7 bulbs?
Stigs dad

Thanks symon ,
They're using h7 bulbs.  I've used  osram day breaker bulbs and I can honestly say there very good.  With it being a pre face lift model I had to buy conversion looms to fit them but it looks better now I think.
    Adie.
Stigs dad

Took the car out this morning to blow the cobwebs off her. Instantly  realised it didn't  sound right and decided to take the covers off and have a look. Immediately found the culprit which turned out to be a torn hose leading to the F pipe hose. While the covers were off I also took the time to replace the rocker cover gaskets , due to one just starting to leak onto the turbo. Cleaned the covers while the were off ,  which I know there not seen  but I couldn't  help myself.

Busy day in the cold doing that
