Test driving an RS3 Sportback this weekend

Hello all.

I thought it was time I had a go in one of the RS models I haven't tried yet, so I'm test driving a 2012 RS3 Sportback this weekend.

Are there any obvious problems I should look out for; any recalls I should check?

Great choice!!

On the lookout for one of these in the coming months.

From what I've read, they sound pretty solid.  Nothing to report by the sounds of it at all!! Audi were always masters of the 5 cyl, so no change there.

Didn't they have a recall on the front brakes ?  Calipers I think ?
Or was it the  TTRS     I recall there was a flood of used  RS calipers and discs  for sale after an issue.

I'm test driving a Golf R first. I'm looking forward to comparing the two. I drove a DSG Golf R last year and I really wasn't impressed at all. I'm trying a manual this time but that won't help with the feeble synthesised soundtrack. It didn't feel that quick either.

I think I read something about the brakes yesterday. I'll do some digging today.

I had a look at RS3's about three years ago when I started considering a change.

While I was impressed with the way the car went, and the DSG box in particular, the car inside felt pretty dated inside once you got past the RS touches. This wasn't overly surprising when you consider the 8P was hitting 8-9yrs old at that stage.

Went on from there to look at the RS5..

Did you buy an RS5? I did consider one but I'm not keen to take on V8 running costs at the moment and I really need something with 5 doors.

Castration is quite painful with a blunt knife apparently if it was for me.

Almost, it came down to that or a 911 - test drove two of each, and went with the 997..for exactly the opposite reason, as I didn't need the five doors..

As much as I liked the RS5, it didn't seem that great around town as it was missing the low Dow performance of something with a turbo (or two)..

Does the RS3 do that snorting noise that the RS6 does when it's changing up a gear? I love that.

Deal done. I'm picking up the RS3 tomorrow.

It was never going to be as sharp, as precise or as angry as the Exige (in fairness I've never driven anything that was) but I absolutely love the noise, the pace, the interior and the gearbox.

My drive in a Golf R in the morning confirmed my thoughts from driving the DSG version last year. A competent car but not in the least bit exciting even when I was pushing on. The manual 'box livened things up a bit but not nearly enough. And the noise that's pumped into the cabin was as pitiful as I remembered it being.

The biggest surprise getting into the '3 was how much nicer the cabin is than the Golf's. The last Audi I drove was my C5 RS6. I didn't realise interiors had moved on so much by the 8P.

I'm very happy with my decision. I know the RS3 isn't to everyone's taste but I really like it and I'm looking forward to putting some miles on it.

I'd like to make the most of the noise (even with S pressed I feel it could do with being a bit louder especially in the cabin) so a catback will probably be in order before too long.

As already mentioned, the brakes had a recall to prevent low speed squeal - but most owners will tell you it makes no difference and either end up living with it or putting shims in (which sometimes fixes it).
The updated brakes have a 'B' on the end of the part numbers stamped on the brake discs as well as an extra 'bobin' shock absorber on the calliper (pre recall only has 1 'bobin').

Only other common issue is propshaft failure - but generally that's if you do a Launch Control


Other than the above they are great cars, and very well spec'd from standard, the only real choice most people go for is buckets or not (aside from colour of course!). Also quite exclusive with only ~700 left in the UK (750 UK spec built).

There was no squeal from the brakes during the test drive; I did quite a lot of low-speed braking on the roads around the dealership.

Is the B visible without removing the discs? I'll check when I collect it this afternoon.
