The Project begins.

As some of you may know from my other post last night, I have picked up an Audi 90 2.3 20v quattro for a measly 20. Wasnt expecting too much from it when I was en route to have a look and potentially buy it, as the price quoted was 200. What the hell I thought, worse way scrap is fetching good money at the moment, so ill strip out anything worth money and scrap the shell if it is a heap of turd.

When I got there, the car was looking very sorry for itself, its once glorious red paint was now a multitude of different shades of pink, with the wings and front doors being the worse culprits for uv damage, but having worked in body shops as a machine polisher, I could see through this minor cosmetic damage and began to look closer at the mechanicals.

I was origianlly told, along with the 200 start price, that it was an Audi 80 2.0 quattro. But once on the scene, and seeing the '20v' badge on the back I knew it was a 2.3 5 cylinder beast and an audi 90, not the 80 stated. So up came the bonnet, and everything looked to be either 'a-ok' or not so bad it was a definite no-no from the get go.

In fact, the only main issues I could detect from the cursory look round were all purely cosmetic. And after having a chat with the old owner, I knew I would be a complete fool to walk away as it had 900 spent on it just 10 months ago on new discs & pads all round, cam belt done and full service.

So it was all systems go, but sod it, Ill try and haggle the guy down a bit. So I suggested the paint  was too far gone and it would need to be resprayed, and I then said how about if you take the tax back and cash it in, and ill give you 20 to get it out of your way. After a min of pondering he agreed, and I drove it home. About an hour later, I got a phone call from the guy saying that in the Isle of Man, Tax cannot be refunded unless the car is scrapped or exported, so I said ill have to bring it back because I really dont want to pay 200 with the paint needing a respray, a few seconds of silence and he says 'ah what the hell, i need it gone today, you can have the tax for fee'. Bargain, I got a car worth 150 just in scrap, and a tax disc i can cash in if I do scrap it thats valid till Jan next year. Double Bonus.

Got her home, in the dark so parked her up and began scouring the net for any info I could find about the 2.3 engine and the '90' in general. Dest supplied some very usefull information (thanks dest   ) and also made me aware that actually, the car was a real rarity. Treble bonus I'm thinking.

Got up this morning, Had to work till 3, so once finished work, I thought to my self 'what the hell, its a nice day, lets give her a good clean and see what we have to work with paint wise'.

I only wanted to look at exterior today, so interior stuff to follow.

A few pics Pre wash:

and as you can see, I didnt lie when I said it would need respraying.... might have sort of implied the whole car though....lol

So, out with the snow foam and heavy duty Hand mitt, hi ho, hi ho.....

Once I had got rid of the various bits of green stuff growing in EVERY nook and cranny (honestly dont think this poor car has ever been washed), it was time to tackle the bonnet. Todays investigations were simply to find out what was possible and what combo of pad/cutting compound to use. Finally went with a green sonus swirl buster pad and meguires 80 speed cut.

A few 50/50's for comparison:

So, as you can see, under all that crap and uv damaged clearcoat there was a lovely red bonnet wishing it had been better looked after. I carried on with the speed cut, doing the whole bonnet. Then I wanted to see what it would look like with a polish and wax applied. Went with the tried and trusted combo of AG super resin polish on a sonus red pad, follwed by a layer of AG HD wax over to give me an idea of what could be expected for the rest of the car.

I am over the moon with the purchase to say the least, mechanically it seems to be 90% good, few minor niggles, but hey, it works, is taxed and actually drives rather well. So for now ill crack on with the paint, get busy on the interior (as bad as the paint, but purely in need of tlc and elbow grease) and then start to asses what to do next. I have found some nice wheels and coilovers  that might be in the budget too!.

Ill keep you posted!

I'm VERY jealous!!
Will be watching this with interest

Ive still not had the chance to polish a faded red car, its got to be the best for before and after differences
Love the old U plate too

You would get a lot of interest/info posting this thread on S2forum too
Rilla

Yeah red is probably the best colour to hit when its faded like this. I have done a couple before but they were all vauxhalls, this was bit more challenging due to audi paint being bullet hard, but once I got cracking it was well worth the time invested.

As for the plate, its just a standard Isle of Man plate, no age assigned to plates here, lucky dip really.

I will register over on the s2 forum and be lazy and just do a copy/paste job from here lol

Wow, great work!  Amazing before and after!

Bargain of the century! I take it this is the 2.3 NG lump, rather than the 7a 20v?

Keep that a few years and it'll be worth 100+ times what you paid!
Rilla

I have no idea to be honest, all I know is it is a 2.3.

Whats the diff, and how do I tell (and im guessing the 7a is the better 1)
Rasss-4

Reminds me of the Pink Scooby I bought over 10yrs ago, it was pink but after a serious machining it came up well gleaming. Good job so far Rilla, will look mint when you get the other bits sorted.

....and for 20 too
dest

Worth a look?

Yeah, nice one Dest, emailed them so will wait for a reply!. Just out of interest mate (if you know), is it possible to fit the '80' style bonnet onto the '90', as the grill is part of the bonnet on the 80 and on my 90 its not, so will I require the lights aswell so it will fit, or will the bonnet simply fit 'over' my existing lights?. Had a look today, and it would seem that 'fit' over my lights' is a do-able option?

And I have been offered a S2 front bumper in red, 180. Do you think thats a reasonable asking price as I know little to nothing of parts prices for these.
Rilla

Been out again today, it was sunny (again!!!), so once I had finished working got back to it on the paint.

Wanted to try and get the passenger side done today (apart from back door which will need respraying), so some pics of todays endeavors:

Got to love a 50/50 shot to make you feel good about your work!

Well I am sure the weather now will be horrendous once again, and im working all day till wednesday so hopefully when I get a day off, it will be nice and sunny and I can get the drivers side done.
dest

Yes. I think you can swap the lights and bonnet etc, but Ive also seen one like yours with just the S2 bumper fitted and it works very well!

Im not sure on S2 parts prices these days, Im a bit out of touch... a quick search on S2forum should give you an idea

Ok, according to my log bog, the engine mumber starts with 7a, so i assume it the 7a version!.

ok cool, I will look to get the bumper first, will get one fitted and then see how she sits, only reason I am thinking about the 80 style bonnet is it a bit nicer imo, and a bit in keeping with the RS4 style, bit more modern?
dest

I'll point Pete (Acidburn) to this thread, he will soon tell you
Acidburn

dest has summond me lol

what parts do you require?

I have 2x front bumpers currently
b4 front end including lights
sideskirts
and I know of a s2 avant rear bumper

I miss my old red 20v q sport.

keep the b3 bonnet and lights and put a s2 bumper or v6 bumper on it and it will look a lot better

something like

or if you go for a full s2 look

if you check under the bonnet at your exhaust manifold, if the car has a cast exhaust manifold change it for a tubular (can of snakes) manifold as it will go a lot better
Acidburn

hmmm not showing the other pic

Acidburn

sorry for double posting the pic, it wasn't posting when i first tried
Acidburn

my old one, used to go bloody well that one.

tubular manifold
rs2 style front bumper (didn't work that well)
ellipsoids
nardi sport steering wheel
big ram air cone filter (could hear more noise from the engine than the exhaust)
lowered
17's
few other mods

The B3 bonnet and lights look awesome with S2 bumper

Yup, its not done by many people but suits them

only thing with using the lights on the gray/gold coupe above is you need to custom make the grill from a couple, not too hard but time consuming.
Rilla

well the front bumper is top of the list, the one on it currently is the lovely shade of pink, but the top half is 'dimpled' so I wont be able to machine polish it back to life.
The side skirts would also be a nice addition, so if you would like to pm me with a rough idea on what your looking price wise, I can try to gain access to the mrs purse while she is asleep!
Acidburn

i'll get a price off my mate for the side skirts as they are his. I have a choice of two bumpers currently i'll get some pics and send you some info in a mo.

Must admit I do miss my 20v q sport loads, still remember the looks it got driving around, the sound is addictive
