Tyre Dillema.. Contis or Pirellis?

I have a tyre dillema.

so far used falkens(gone cheap)
now it is time to get something better on the RS2. im going to 245/35/18 which is the excact same as 245/40/17 in terms of rolling diameter.

I have found both tyres on camskill (for mercedes, but i dont think it makes a difference), about the same price.

Continental sport contact3 and pirelli pzero rosso.

I have been told recently that the pirellis are better. I would like some info on people using either on their rs to see which is the best way to go.
I have used contis SP2 in the past, with good results.

thanks

I'd go conti's , only as I found the rosso's wear'd fast and conti's are allways good
VasP

i see

i also noticed just that there are pirellis pzeros and also pzero rosso. and im trying to see the difference(as the ones i have found are the pzeros)
VasP

apparently no real difference. the pzeros have a bit stiffer contstruction than the rossos according to the pirelli website
trevithick

I've got P zero rossos' and they grip well and are predictable at their limit, but they do wear a bit quick. I get around 5 - 5.5 k from a set.
I've been looking for possible others due to the wear issue so I'm interested on your views of the others.
One problem with the 245 (if you're on standard wheels) they rub on the back suspension arms and have been known to cause failure, DickyC changed from 245 to 225 on mine before I bought it, but I note you must have a different wheel set.
Good luck, I'm all eyes.

VasP

no, im on 18 inch. i know the problem with the rub and its not only that on the oem wheels but also the fact that the wheels are too narrow for the 245 width. i have the veloce wheels which are 18x8 and they are ideal for 245 tyre now.

Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas
VasP

what is that??

are they good or falken standards?
jas11n

WAY above Falken.
Some folk love them, some folks hate them. Bit like any tyre.

I love them and will be replacing the Conti's on the RS when they dead.
Have them on my 18" mk1 S8 Avus on the S2.
VasP

just checked and couldnt find them on the 245/35/18 though
supersi

I've got the Vredestein's , I think there good
VasP

yes indeed. vredestein does not make that size on the ultra sessanta.

been getting some generalised feedback that the pirellis have a short life span from different forums... hmmm

looks like the SP3 are gaining then.
supersi

Yer I'd go for the conti's then are very good tyres and I like the look of them ( nice Tred pattern)

Have a peak at the Goodyear F1's:

Avoid the Vred's unless you like riding around on jelly and want the traction control kicking in on every corner.

My last 2 sets are conti's and I cant really complain. Great overall tyre and can be pushed to the max. The best tyre I ever had was the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. Cant get them anymore and the Pilot Sort 3's are nowhere near as good.

Stay away from the Vreds. I remember Juice buying a set and replacing them almost immediately. Not designed for high powered AWD cars.
Vreds fall into the category of Cheap and Nasty!
Cornishmoocher

I had both Conti's and pirellis on my 6 and the were both shit. Contis were even worse than the vredestiens and lasted a week the pzero's were ok until it rained.
Best tyres by far Goodyear eagle assymetric or Mitchelin.
peterp1972

Goodyears?? Last time I had these was on a RWD Australian Muscle Car. Didnt even know you could get these out here.

Anyone heard of Yokohama Advan then. If you can get these out here they leave all European brands for dead.

Don't last too long though

Sure it never rains out here
That's why I came over. The great weather
Cornishmoocher

Agree with Mark.

Even with some of the european manufacturers you have to be careful... Take Vredestien for instance, their Ultrac sassanta is a pure summer tyre and will not work under 7 degrees C. Well it will obviously, but vredestien do not recommend it.
MarkB

I've found the Vred's to be fine so far. But I have been running them with about 50hp. We'll see how they perform in the coming months.

Up to trying the Vred's I've been a keen Goodyear user...
Cornishmoocher

You know my thoughts on em.....
The peeps who were happy with them on the 6's were either running 275's as opposed to 255's or were not running the power/suspension set up that i was.
I have my own thoughts on the reason, but was pretty much shot down on the darkside for it.

I'm interested to hear all about experiences with the Vred's - thinking of getting them, on my tart-waggon, so not that fast!
Cornishmoocher

Ok..... On a vred, with the very pronounced tread pattern, you have actually only got about half as much rubber in contact with the road as you do with a GYEF1 assy. I measured what was actually in contact, its aboout half the tyre. You have a look at the 2 side by side.... You tell me what you think.
On a hot summers day... no problem, I am sure the vreds will grip like a bazzard, or in the wet, but not on my car they didn't. hey - ho!!

Your just a shit driver mooch
AliGod78

Turn off/down the boost maybe? Not that I'd know what that is at all!

Waiting to hear back on price from a very local garage. But those do look a little rounded. Should be a right laugh in mid-winter. Thank god for Quattro?

trevithick

This has got to be the most popular the S2/RS2 bit has ever been.
VasP

i think i have decided to go with contis!
will1981

I put 4 new conti's on and they work for me
trevithick

Let us know how they go I might give them a shot.
supersi

What was the conti priced at
VasP

154GBP including VAT from camskill
supersi

And What size are yours And what tyre of conti
VasP

i currently use 225/40/18, and im going to 245/35/18 which is the correct size.

i dont want to use 225 again although they are cheaper.

the contis are sport contact 3
Error404

Bump to an old thread

How are you getting on with these Vas?
I'm fitting 245/35 18 Conti 3s to my CHs, I've been on Bridgestones for years but they only make run flats in that size
trevithick

Bumpity bump, how are the new tyres going ? Do the 245s rub on the rear suspension at all ?
Willbo

Hi Guys not been on here for a while. Just been reading this thread I had loads of trouble selecting Tyre's for my RS2. I eventually opted for TOYO Proxies 235/40 ZR17.
They perform very well and don't rub at all.

trevithick

Has anyone tried 235/45/17 they are exactly the same diameter as the originals and I was wondering.
Error404

I've got 245/35 on my coupe now, without any problems, not muhc help RE: the avant rears though.
I know a couple RS2s on S2forum are running 245/35 18 but I think with a slight massage to the rear arches.
Jamo

235/40/17 on a 7" wide rim? hmm

Why don't you want to use 225 on the 18" Vas?

I need new tyres but having had 35 profile on tyres before I prefer the 40 profile
trevithick

Apparently these are new to Toyo and needing a new set I thought I'd give them a try, I'll let you know from the ditch.
They are Toyo Pro Xes T1 sport 225/45 94Y.
Priced about the same as the old Pirelli Neros.
Cheers

Be interesting to see how you get on http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Toyo/Proxes-T1-Sport.htm

The old wet grip comment again, mind you on a 4WD car it's not as bad
Willbo

I've managed to stay out of the ditch so far with my Toyos on! I tried 45s but didn't like the look of the car with them on so opted for the 40s and they have been fantastic.
trevithick

I've stuck with the 45s due to doing long runs and they are the closest to the original diameter.
