After 6 months on owning a B7 S4 I'm underwhelmed and so I'm looking to move to a B8 S4 then get it mapped .

Everything I read say the Rear Sports diff is a must have, but I cant seem to to find any cars in my price range (18 to 25k) that have it?

Are they rare, or do the dealers/private sellers not list it for some reason?

Also is there a way to tell if the car has a sports diff 'just by looking' ?
I've spoken to a couple of indy dealers and they seem clueless whether S4's they are selling have it or not!

Lastly, Drive select: Is it only on the STronic equipped cars? And can a car have it and not have the sport diff?

I should add I'm looking for a Avant.

If you look under the rear of the car at the diff you can tell ..

If it has a sports diff you will see the control unit and several plugs at the rear of the diff towards the bottom of the unit ..

They do come up, but so many cars don't have it. Although even exluding that option, there are far more cars light on options available than the other end of the scale.

Audi dealer listings are broadly speaking terrible in terms of accuracy and independant dealer/private sellers will be down to the competence of the individual case. I found the most reliable route to identifying what options the car had was Audi customer services. Give them a call, explain you are a private buyer and give them the reg. Boot stickers and service books do not always have all the option codes now, so that is not as reliable as it used to be.

Drive select was available on all transmissions. You cannot have the sports diff without drive select, but you can have drive select but not the sports diff, as the drive select could have been paired with only dynamic steering and/or damper control.

You'd be surprised; it's a lovely thing to have from our perspectives but a lot of people buying these cars have no intention of driving them at more than 3/10!

This is the way I do it when looking at B8s - not that I'm in the market right now. †If it has the drive select buttons to the bottom right of the CD DVD slot, this is your starter for ten. †You can disregard all cars without the buttons

Vid showing a fully loaded cars Audi Drive Select (ADS) being set up via the menu.  The car has dampers, steering and diff.  The car is an S Tronic hence there is a fourth setting for the gearbox you wouldn't get on a manual

I presume a car with, if being viewed, will have diff settings in the options for the  individual drive select mode via the MMI.

Ok thanks for your great info.

I have now got a local Audi Dealer keeping an eye on the UK approved stock list for a 10/11 car with all the options i want.
Although he said with the Sport diff the Avants are a bit rare, i'm not in a rush though I just want the right car...

I can second the fact that the Audi dealers often dont advertise the options list, even on the phone it was hard to get out of them what it had and didn't have. Often the sales person knows a lot less than the enthusiasts. Asking about an interior light pack or storage pack is likely to get a stunned response never mind a sports diff!

That said, they can get the list from their system of factory options though and you can ask them to send it to you by email from the reg. At the end of the day they are paid to close deals and sell cars which i'm sure they are good at, and once they learn you are an enthusiast they are usually smart enough to work out you are serious and will happily help you with the spec etc. I had a good experience when buying mine even thought the advert on the approved used site hardly listed any of the options.

I believe the options you want to look out for are
-[1BL] Damping control
-[1N7] Dynamic steering
-[2H1] Audi drive select
-[GH2] quattro sports differential

Good luck finding a good one!

There's one on AT at the moment - £17k asking - bargain for someone who isn't worried about mileage.

Shame I'm not ready to buy just yet
