Boring How To Update:

What do you do when you are woken at stupid oclock in the morning? Well I got up and bashed my tappet some more.

Right i know alot of you have probably been burning up inside with intrigue as to whats actually going on in this massively exciting update. Wait no longer as i put you out of your misery.

So as im sure most of you know the hydraulic tappet / lifter whatever you want to call them is basically a valve that is pumped up with oil pressure designed to take the slack between the cam lobe and the tappet. Thus doing away with solid tappets and the need to bother with valve lash adjustment.

There is a plunger operated by the oil to take up the slack when the valves closes and a ball valve that closes so it becomes solid for when the valves open.

Here I was visually inspecting the surfaces of the tappets as i am reusing them and then pulling them apart to remove the varnish thats built up over the years from dirty oil which can cause them to not operate properly.

I broke them down into the individual components. You can see the build up of varnish some were worse...

The cap pops off the inner plunger (be careful not to lose the ball and smallest spring.. it tends to stay in the cap but be warned). Then carefully clean with brake cleaner / jizzer / whatever. Remove all the old oil from the tappet as this will allow all the valvetrain to compress on installation rather than some sticking up and possibly causing damage. Then re-assemble...

Then repeat 29 times...

Back in the head. Same position before removal and new (used) cams have matching set kept in order...

Thank god thats done.

Time to put the cams back in.

Plenty of lube. I love lube. All the contact surfaces. Put it in one spot too many in this photo had to rub it off. Bonus points if you can name it.

Sure im probably only repeating what been covered numerous times but once more for good luck.. Best thing todo to make sure you time your cams properly is mark the chain with pen or tipex. 16 is the number of rollers so mark on 1 and then mark on 16. Then mark your sprockets. The drivers side roller sits direct above the marks whereas the the NS Passenger are offset outwards on both...

New gasket and seal. Smear of sealant. Not too much dont want it getting in the oil passage to the tensioner...

Screw VVT down. Tighten the cams down with caps 2 and 4. Make sure you get them the right way round and all the dowels locate first...

Then caps 1, take tool out. Sealant in correct places on the end caps then bolt down. Then middle cap...

Repeat on the otherside et voila...

Picked all these up from the coaters...

Waterpump on, covers on, water manifold back on with new orings, dipstick in...

Timed back up...

PAS back on...

Pipes, mounts, more covers, afterrun pump, turbo feeds, some more stuff. Progress slowed as i've now got an A4 list of random stuff i need to source such as bolts, gaskets etc...
