FYI Mackies cannot do a final test on the box - they don't see enough quattro boxes to make it worth their while.
The VB is no probs tho.

It'd be good to know where in the UK they CAN do a final test on the box (by which I mean filling it and spinning it up to max speed, etc etc).

Mackies could rebuild the box for you too, just not do a final-test. No idea what they'd charge.

I appreciate the rec. Calum, but I'd already taken myself out of the picture for this.

Almost...

Leon, if you are quoted 1000's for a rebuild then it may well be worth your while trying the box I've just done. I'm not looking to make any money off it.

It's cost me around 1300 to buy and rebuild it. Add on the price of the oils to put in it, plus fitting at your garage and a courier to get it there, you'd still be looking at a lot less than the 3k+ cost I've heard just for a rebuilt box without filling or fitting it.
If it turns out to be useless, I'll take it right back.
You'd be out-of-pocket for the oils (which should be reusable) and the fitting, of course.

Just a thought and no rush or pressure

Jock - ZF have their UK workshop in Nottingham, surely they would be able to the final test.

Hopefully, Ian.
That's possibly closer to Cumbria too. Certainly worth a phone call .

They do. It's not even 5 minutes away from where I live. But dunno if there's an off the road walk in option for folk, looks a very special set up though!

We do the Audi RS6 ZF5HP24 gearbox recondition. We probably go through one a month including my own personal one.

Price for a full rebuild including a 12 month warranty is 2500+VAT
Turnaround time is usually around a week to a week and a half.

This includes:
Reconditioned gearbox and torque converter
Air-con de-gas and re-gas
New oil and filter
Excellent customer service.

We are situated on Emmanuel Street, PR1 7LN, just on the corner of Blackpool Road, in Preston many people drive past our workshop everyday without realising that they have just passed one of the largest vehicle repair workshops in the North West.

With 10 ramps, an 11,000 square foot workshop and a combined experience of over 100 years, we are larger and better equipped than most main dealerships and we are certainly much more competitive on price.

Our contact number is either 01772 259068/258117

Opening times are
Mon-Fri: 8am-5:30pm
Saturday: 8am-12pm

Thank you very much, pleasure to be here.

Next one we have in, I'll upload a VERY pic heavy teardown of the box and I'll go through the valve body as well. Who knows, we may even be showing you Leon's gearbox!

Hello mate

Is that including fitting? If so that's a cracking price.

Plus, how will they stand up against remapping? We know the standard box can take a map, but I've seen rebuilt/recon boxes start to slip once remapped, but fine standard. How will the warranty work with mapped cars?

Do you offer any "upgrade works", to both the box and valve body?

Sorry for the questions, it just helps to get as much information as possible. We all know these gearboxes are not great at the best of times!

Thanks for coming over to offer your services too!

Yes that includes fitting. We've yet to have a remapped one come back. In the unlikely event there is a failure, we maintain our original 12 month/12,000 mile warranty for all our boxes. However if failure is caused by modifications/tuning we would ask the customer to contribute an amount to the labour costs, and we will pay the parts.

This is an awesome price!!!

What would be the cost of this job if the gearbox came to you on a pallet via courier please?!

To be honest, we don't really like doing loose units. Main reason is that we don't get to have a look at the peripherals of the gearbox (i.e cooler) and we aren't in control of the refitting which means whomever puts it back in is responsible if they don't put enough oil in, the right oil, or, and we've seen this before, they bolt the torque converter to the engine as opposed to fitting it in the gearbox to line up with the oil pump, and the pump then smashes and causes the car not to drive.

So unfortunately, we would only take the job on if we had the full car.

If push comes to shove, we can do a loose unit box, however the warranty is on condition that a new cooler is put on, and the box is fitted by a reputable garage. If the gearbox fails due to an error during fitting, it leaves is in a bit of a sticky situation as we can't be held liable for the failure

Price for the gearbox is 1,750+VAT

James
