Hi folks, I'm off to the local stealers tomorrow to have an initial look round for an S3 (or maybe "just" an A3).
And no, before anyone asks, this is NOT to replace the S8 - that's a keeper!

This is to replace our second car and there are quite a few options on the table to consider.
I have had a good test drive in an A3 e-tron but have decided that isn't the model we want. If it is an A3 it will be top-end, ideally an S3 saloon or sportback and must be automatic not manual.

Doesn't have to be new but I would want power seats (don't think memory is possible sadly), is that a common option? And adaptive cruise?
Few other options I want too but they are less important.

Any thoughts, feedback, experiences?

No memory seats on the 8V which annoyed me!
The Wife has only driven the RS3 once and I've still not managed to get the seat back where I had it!
I think you might find power seats on an S3 hard to find as most will go for the Super Sports that are manual only (with electric lumbar). More likely on an A3 S-Line/Black Edition (I can thoroughly recommend the 184TDI Quattro - had that engine in the Octavia vRS and Stage 1 or a tuning box takes it to 240bhp and some silly torques, but still with economy when you want it).

ACC is quite rare, it was a must for me having had it on the SQ5 and missed it badly on the S1 and Octavia vRS that made way for the RS.

Overall I don't think you can go too wrong with the 8V. The only other option I would definitely look for is the Tech Pack - the screen/interface is A LOT better than the standard offering.

Annoys me too, you can even get them on some models of Mini! (including the 192hp Cooper S Clubman 8-speed auto I drive today)

Considering the Skoda Octavia shares the same MQB base platform and it has it, I was amazed the VAG range topping Audi equivalent car didn't.
It's OK tho, the 5-pot motor made up for it

I've been keeping an eye on these, occasionally loaded ones crop up, but there are LOTS with minimal options. Personally, B&O and HD Nav Touch would be the essentials. Super Sports and the extended leather are nice to have. Cruise can be retrofitted so don't discount cars missing it / missing the comfort pack.

The Super Sports are only electric in the lumbar support (like my 1999 A4 as I found the other day haha)

"Super Sports Seats (front) in black Fine Nappa leather with integrated head restraints, pronounced side bolsters for improved lateral support when cornering, manual seat adjustment including adjustment of the seat cushion angle with extendable thigh support and electric lumbar support. On S3, S embossing is included"

And what a useless bunch they were!
Couldn't find and A3 or S3 (or RS3 which they had in the showroom) with electric seats of any sort anywhere on the premises.
No hospitality, no engagement, didn't even offer to show us how the seats worked in another model (they had a nice new RS6 Avant there too) or even ask much about what we wanted or why.

So we trotted down the road (just a mile) to Jaguar to have a look at the XE. Very helpful, nice fresh real coffee (and biccies) and test drive arranged for tomorrow morning.
Jaguar was a double-win as SWMBO wanted to do some shopping in Tesco and it's pretty much over the road, so she did a quick shop while I spoke to Jaguar and looked at some cars and sample internal finishes. Extra bonus - parked the S8 at Jaguar in nice big parking slots and not in the horrid Tesco car park.

I wanted to like the XE - nearly got an XF instead of the SQ5 - but I just don't like the rear end of the XE. Nice inside though

Electric seats are only available on the standard seats and they cost 745.  You cannot get fully electric Super Sports.  So realistically you are looking for a needle in a haystack approved used.  If you want them you probably have to buy new I'd imagine?

I'd imagine, but the stealers weren't imaginative enough to work that out and help me in any way towards that.
Never even got to the point of finding out if we were looking for new or used.... (answer either are possible)
I got the impression they were used to people just walking in and ordering 50K plus cars without actually making any effort.

Unfortunately its also the kind of option thats almost impossible to spot from the pics and will likely be 'missed' on the approved used.  Folding mirrors are also often missed off etc etc

Mate of mine was looking at approved used and insisted on the optional rear side airbags for the little one.  Those will NEVER be listed in approved adverts!  He ended up ordering new

I would have loved memory seats as well.  5'10" versus 5'5"  with corresponding different driving positions.

It's been the biggest 'problem' with the B5 and B6  we currently have, although if it's a shortish distance I can drive in 'her' position, it's easier than putting it back afterwards!
Still our S3 saloon is still sitting in the dealers, until next Tuesday, regardless of the lack of memory seats !

Interestingly I was following it through the factory during building and the spec kept listing 'memory drivers seat'.
I assumed/hoped it was a factory standard upgrade - that sometimes happens-but no such luck !

Re local Dealer - why not try another, if not to far away.

My best showroom experiences have been  with  Hatfield and especially Reading & Solihull Porsche. A totally different atmosphere - and I was not actually buying ( but it was close ! ).

Funnily enough I went into Audi Hatfield a few days ago, after having a test drive at the nearby Lexus dealer. They were not really much use either....
Audi Watford have been reasonably good to be fair.

Sadly, after input from SWMBO it looks like we're going down the Volvo (V40) route....

Noooooooooooooo!  Sorry to hear about the Volvo

You manage to drive any S3 at any dealer?

Hatfield have just listed a Sept 2015 '65' manual for a good price, hopefully the pics are up soon.
