Hi Guys,

I have bought a V reg S3 which I dearly love, but it isn't playing ball!

When I bought the car the turbo died on my journey home. The garage happily repaired it by plonking a new turbo in. They did not however change the oil lines or hoses.

The new turbo worked for a while but over 4500rpm it just felt like there was no power! This turbo then died and leaks were found on the intake manifold and some hoses were dead.

So it has now had (on thurs), new hoses, intake manifold, oil lines, turbo (again). The problem is still there and I don't really want to kill another turbo!

Has anyone any ideas why this might happen? I am thinking maybe a dodgy Gas recirc valve or maybe a leak elsewhere? is this a well known problem or may there be a more in depth thing?

Are there any guys in the Northeast (round Newcastle that know more about this engine than I do?) would also be good to meet some lads into these cars round here too

Rob.

Was the sump taken off to check for sludge?

Does anyone have a pressure testing kit up around Robbie that might be able to help him diagnose his leak?

If you then find it's not holding pressure then does anyone know of anywhere local that would pressure test the ICs? Just a thought...

One day soon Robbie you'll be able to enjoy your S3! I feel for you mate!

Yes the Sump, oil filter and oil was all changed along with the oil lines to the turbo.

One day... been quite a few months now... about 8 months!

I can feel how good it will be! just gotta be gentle till I can get it sorted!

The main things that kill turbos are boost leaks and bad oil supply. It sounds like you have a big boost leak if it's not making good power at higher engine speeds?

Had the turbos suffered bearing or blade damage?

Like the other guys have said, an intake system pressure test is what you need to start with. If the turbo is trying to make up for a leak, it will overspin and that will damaged the blades.

You are correct the Turbos both died from bearing wear causing the blade to gain lateral movement

I think oil supply is ok... so the only thing left I guess is to find someone in the northeast that can run a pressure test on it for me.

Anyone with any ideas?

I'm not an expert, I just know what has happened to me and what I've read.

Sounds like a big intake system leak then. A pressure test will find it easy. Or, you could find it with an inspection. There tends to be oil vapour residue arould the leak, so look for oily, dirty pipework between the turbo and intake manifold.

I don't know of any specialists up your way sorry. I would say no boost till it's fixed though

I wouldn't know but I can see where you're coming from.. if it is caked up then there would be no oil getting through!

Hmm I think that may be a job I can look at, just need to get underneath her.

Kinda frustating have what I know is a nice car but not being able to use it to its full potential.

Shouldn't the garage be sorting it all for you? and giving you a courtesy car for your inconvenience?

Yes they should!

Don't let them fob you off robbie. They have to pay for any work you have done on it.

Sadly I was foolish and bought a car from what appeared from their website to be a decent bunch... oakwood car sales in Whitley Bay, but it turned out they were a squalid bunch of cowboys... I will chase them for the cost but I'm not letting them touch the car!

It is now with Prestige German cars and we'll see what their report of the work done is... then go back to the garage that supposedly did something.

Get the sump off and change the oil pump and once assembled run an oil pressure test with a known good gauge
