Had a phone call from my mate who has an s4 b6 manual.

He said that he was changing gear from I think first to second and he said that there was a lot of crunching/scraping noise...he thought perhaps the exhaust was dragging on the ground, that sort of noise.

Anyway he then goes to have a look underneath and around the car and nothing.  So gets back in to drive off and he can select a gear but get no drive!  Nothing. He tried reverse, 1,2,3rd and no drive!

What's happened, sounds like something major to me!

Any hep appreciated

So you reckon the box is ok, but the clutch has let go?  My first thought was the clutch somewhere..

It'll be gearbox out job then?

Possibly the dual mass flywheel which has wiped out the clutch

Cheers fellas,

Is there aftermarket routes to go with this... Ie smf??  I've read a few wee things that suggest that perhaps there is?

If he heard some noises it could be a driveshaft or cv failure.

Yeh, true, I'll pass the info on.. Not heard how he's got on this morning.  I think the car is going to get looked at on Monday now..

Either way, I reckon he could forking out a fair bit of coin!

So an update on this..... He got it towed to a local garage, and then whilst at the garage, the guy asked him to just roll it down the hill to a space at the garage, but guess what he then had the gears back!!!

He went on holiday and now is back.  The guy at his local garage says to investigate the problem is beyond him, and suggested taking it to Star Performance.

So now he has the case back and he says it is running absolutely fine, no slipping clutch, pulls well in all gears and no noises.

All a bit weird?

Any thoughts?

really need to spy into the bell housing.

Things like that do have a reason and going away doesn't mean it won't come back, in the fast lane, at 70(ish)

clutch release bearings can go in this way. on/off working/not working. If the plastic hub of the bearing falls apart, some tines on the clutch are not getting the 2mm or so extra push, and in marginal cases where the clutch is already on the way out, this could make all the difference.
Possibly the bearing hub has disintegrated a little more, alllowing a majority of the tines to be depressed and a few to be over-depressed.

Depressing news but I'm happy with that woolly explanation.

See first line, above.

Cheers for the input Jock!  Would you recommend anyone in Fife to undertake looking at the car?  He's in Elie..

Star Performance would be handy enough, I guess. Not been there myself in 10 years!

They should have the wherewithall to inspect the clutch thru the bell housing eg where the clutch slave cylinder goes. I think there is an other aperture to allow crap to escape the bell housing, which you could get an endoscope into.

If it's intermittent Id suspect the hydraulics - I'd bleed the system thoroughly as a first step. It's a fiddle and lazy techs dont bother. The state of the fluid that comes out is often pretty horrifying. Check the fluid line to the slave. Also check that the master cylinder isn't weeping.
