Evening all!  Can't stop looking at a2's at the moment... Seem to be pretty good value for money atm. Question is what engine to go for..petrol 1.4 or 1.6, or the 1.4 tdi???  Is the road tax £30 for all?

Wat else to look out for?  I'd prefer to have the panoramic roof and the five seat option but not deal breakers, climate control would be a high priority!

Talk to me...

The 1.4 tdi is a great little unit. I've had my Seat Arosa for nearly six years now and put over 70k on it in that time, currently coming up on 123k and the engine is faultless, not a puff of smoke.

I've driven it through France and to Germany and back at 80mph all the way not a problem. It's genuinely nippy although I guess the A2 will be heavier.
Still, even though it's coming on 15 years old not many modern smaller capacity diesels can match the 144 ft lb torque figure and it's quite revvy too. My partners 1.6 Mini Cooper D felt really sluggish by comparison!!!

Plus they remap really well apparently but I've honestly never felt the need. I'm just happy with it the way it is. £30 tax, £180 insurance and an mpg figure in the high 50's even though I bomb around everywhere in it like I'm 17 again half the time

1.4tdi 75ps. Then get a map on it and it's just as good as the 90ps but no variable vane turbo and no dual mass flywheel

My brothers got two †had one †from new †1.4 tdi SE †75bhp †51 plate . 196000 miles †still on original clutch . The other 05 †1.4tdi 90 bhp sport . The ride is more hard in this because of the 17in rims and suspension. †I ve heard the panoramic roofs can cause  grief .
Excellent little cars but are they not going to fall under the diesel scrap scheme ?

My mrs has still got her 1.6fsi sport, started off a lovely car and still is when its running fine. Had nothing but problems with it the past yr or so. Was warned by Tony (a2cars) that if you get a 1.6 then you really have to do your homework with that engine.

If you want honest advice guy then give tony a ring at A2 cars milton keynes. The guy is a wealth of knowledge. He knows these cars inside out.

Apart from that they are a lovely little motor and nice to drive, nippy aswell

Thanks for all the replies guys!  Sounds like the 1.6 is best avoided then, and the 75hp 1.4tdi is the way forward!

The search continues... just doesn't help when the nearest car worth looking at is about 200 miles away!  You boys down south certainly have more choice closer to home
